GM Canada Shows How It Builds The Chevy Silverado At Its Oshawa Plant: Video

A new video from GM Canada shows some highlights from the 30,000 individual steps that go into the production of a Chevy Silverado pickup truck at the GM Oshawa Assembly plant in Ontario, Canada. The video touches on various steps from on-site parts finishing to final testing of the vehicle before shipping.

The 2-minute and 29-second clip describes watching the assembly of a Chevy Silverado as “oddly satisfying,” which is also a Chevy hashtag, and notes the precision needed to successfully assemble a finished vehicle.

The video highlights the size and complexity of the 9 million square foot plant, as well as the intricacy of the process of putting together 3,000 pieces into a completed truck. Some of the 1,200 robots in the body shop are shown, handling tasks such as stamping and welding, or shifting partly assembled cabs from place to place.

A view of a robot and a human worker putting the doors on a Chevy Silverado cab are shown, followed by the powder-coating process used to paint the vehicles. The chassis are assembled upside down to provide easy access to the undercarriage, after which a view is provided of the cab and bed being welded together.

The video ends with final assembly and a rain test in which the trucks are sprayed down with large amounts of water to check seals. Overall, the clip gives a glimpse of the large-scale industrial processes used at Oshawa, which was given a C$1.2 billion retooling in 2020 and 2021. The site employs approximately 2,600 workers according to the automaker,

GM announced a fresh investment of C$280 million in Oshawa Assembly in summer 2023. The new funding will prepare the facility for producing the next generation of heavy-duty ICE trucks, including an assembly line for HD pickup engines. Marissa West, president of GM Canada at the time, said the plant has “a critical role in meeting customer demand for GM’s popular full-size trucks,” adding, “we will continue to build pickups with Oshawa pride for years to come.”

  1. My 1976 Silverado SWB Stepside 4×4 , was built there. A great truck. Wish one could still get Square bodies again.

  2. Oshawa makes the highest quality vehicles among all of GM’s plants. Great to see it operating again

    1. They should make the square body double cab with a five and a half foot box that’d be a nice truck 6.2 L 10 speed

  3. My experience with my 2022 Silverado 2500 HD 6.6 gas truck wasn’t good. The trucks they turned out in the early time of plant retooling have quality issues.
    – runs and drips in paint
-Ding in hood that was fixed by using “touch up paint” that wasn’t even close to a match. I had someone apply a black pinstripe to hid the issue
    -Oil line leaking oil
    -Squeeling breaks .
    – Steering shaft noise
-Duct work not connected on driver side
Dont expect anyone to follow up and call you back from Oshawa either.
I hope they got their act together since 2022.
If i cant get a truck made in USA I wont get another one.

  6. I was there for the closing of the original truck plant in 2009. We built 1350 a day on 3 shifts. Set a GM production record of 56 days in a row reaching count. Had to build a special display cabinet in the entrance of the plant for the J.D. Power awards. With the Canadian dollar averaging 70 cents and the count and quality, the Oshawa plant was a license to print money for GM. We supported many U.S. plants that were just squeaking out a profit like the Cavalier and Sunfire and later all those crappy Aleros and Skylarks. Politics closed it in ‘09, not responsible fiscal decisions. Sad, very sad.

  7. It’s too bad, GM can’t build quality vehicles here in the USA. While the price has gone up, some quality has dissapeared. Our new 3500 HD, has had many many issues. Waited for ever, to get a REG cab. Had to settle for the Work Truck trim level. Our last One ton, was a 1991, reg cab, Silverado buety. Last year for Square bodies. Built in Canada.. Should have kept it. It would be worth a whole lot of cash by now. As they say, “They don’t make “em like they used too”.

    1. WE still have our Black 1989 K30. My husband put a 454 in it. Best truck we have ever owned. It will stay with us for as long as we can keep it. Parts and pieces are so easy to get now. We have been offered big money for it. NOT FOR SALE. Square bodies are getting more costly by the day. IF GM had an ounce of ideas left, they should do a retro looking “Square Body” style regular Cab K30 again. If they did, it would sell out very fast. That’s if they could keep up with demand. Seems a bit harder now to get what you order.

  8. this video is too short–no procedures can be seen in context–try to concentrate on a specific step and its gone before you can focus–this is something for the dreaded tictok app not the gm authority site–hh
