GM Canada Recalls 249,000 Chevy Silverado And GMC Sierra Pickups For Unlatching Tailgates

General Motors has released a safety recall in Canada for certain units of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups due to an issue with the tailgate opening while driving.

The problem: affected trucks may have a condition where the tailgate’s electronic gate-release switch may short circuit due to water intrusion, which may cause the tailgate to inadvertently unlatch while the vehicle is in Park.

The hazards: if the tailgate where to become unlatched while driving, unsecured cargo may come out of the truck bed and create a road hazard, thus increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: certified GM technicians will be instructed to inspect affected vehicles and replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, free of charge. Before this remedy is implemented, owners are advised to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving.

Affected components: tailgate.

Affected vehicles:

Number of affected vehicles: According to General Motors, there are a total of 222,490 trucks affected. Notably, this recall only applies to vehicles equipped with a power-locking tailgate.

Update: in late February 2024, GM announced an expansion of the recall, now affecting 249,132 Silverado and Sierra units in Canada.

Owners should: General Motors will notify owners of affected vehicles by mail and instruct them to make an appointment with their local GM dealer. 2. It’s amazing how these companies can never engineer something right as a tailgate. Why do we need an electronic locking tailgate? Are people too lazy to actually pull the handle and let the tailgate come down? I mean really that multi-purpose tailgate is just another area of something to fail also. More pivoting points means more areas of something to break and the owner’s going to have to fix. As long as he’s car companies are greedy and greedy shareholders and making vehicles cheap this is the future of vehicles in this country. They need to go back and start engineering the parts themselves and making them here and quit relying on the rest of the world to make everything for you. It’s amazing how we have all the technology in the world here to build a good part but yet back in the day when we didn’t have any technology they still built cars better then. If you’ve got $80 to $100,000 to blow or more on a truck why don’t you just get a classic vehicle and sink that money into the vehicle custom make it yourself and you can put the best things in that vehicle that you want and you don’t need to be buying stuff that you don’t need. Cars have too much crap in them these days and we don’t need half of the stuff that’s in there anyways. Not every person who owns a car that’s fully loaded is going to use every single feature in there and you know it. All manufacturers are garbage and even Toyota’s quality start to fall also. Getting rid of the V8 in the tundra and putting a smaller engine with the turbo you’re just asking for trouble. You cannot compensate for a V8 engine it’s not the same. Rushing air and fuel into a small engine is a disaster waiting to happen down the road. And when it does happen it’s after the warranty. And you’re there having to replace the motor. It’s called planned obsolescence. Manufacturers are only going to make cars to last a certain period and then you’re stuck with the problems later on or having to buy a new one and that’s what they want you to do. If you got money to blow custom build your own vehicle. You can put the best aftermarket parts in that vehicle if you’re patient enough it’ll last a lot longer than anything from a factory would. There’s all kinds of car customizing shops in this country. People need to wake up and learn how to fix their own cars also on top of it. If you don’t know how to use a scan tool learn. Also CVT transmissions are also garbage. A CV transmission has no gears if you don’t know what that is. Completely relying on electronics. It’s not the same as a regular transmission and doesn’t shift the same either.

  3. This is what it is. If you have the money to buy a vehicle with every available option then you worked hard everyday to have this and you deserve this. People these days do not have time in their busy schedules to fix cars and vehicles are more complex than they were years ago. People do not have the knowledge to repair today’s vehicles, this is why today’s mechanic needs damn near a doctor’s degree and earns the money they do. Majority or the cars that go down the road today are problem free and compared to 30 years ago we can get 300,000 miles out of a car. I can live with a simple tailgate recall seeing how I need to make sure my load is secured and my gate is properly secured at all times. I am responsible for my load once it hits the bed of my truck and so is every driver out there.

  4. Just because a car is fully loaded with a bunch of stuff that you really don’t need doesn’t mean you need to buy it. You know you’re not going to use every single feature when you’re driving that car. Yes cars are more complex but a lot of it is just simple things as replacing something as simple as a switch. If you get a scan tool and plug it in the OBD2 port you’ll be able to find out what it is. If you don’t know what the meaning of that is you can always research it and look it up. Dealers will charge you an outrageous amount of money to do a simple thing and tell you it was something else. Then you’ll be overcharged for something that was completely ridiculous and you could have done it yourself. But if you don’t educate yourself you’re going to get screwed. Manufacturers do not manufacture most of their parts anymore they’re all outsourced. And you know they’re going to tell these companies to make them as cheap as possible so they can make even more profit. It’s good to learn how to use a scan tool you’re going to save yourself a lot of money on your lifetime. Dealers have millions of dollars of overhead when it comes to car sitting on their lot and they’re paying interest on every one of those cars every single day. So you know why they charge so much money.everybody has a day off here and there and you could always learn how to do stuff. You’re always best to order a car the way you want it instead of buying it off the lot. That’s what I’ve always done I’ve never had to wait no more than 8 weeks when it comes to GM vehicle. This way I get what I want and what I don’t need. 2001 I bought an F-150 SuperCrew and it had for example an adjustable brake pedal. Why would I need to pay for a feature like that if it’s never going to get used. It’s at one position and a lifetime that I’ve owned it and never adjusted it for any reason. That was a few hundred dollars back then maybe it was about 500 who knows of something that I never used. So next time anybody drives a car really think about what you’re really using in there and all the 12 other features that you’re not using that you’re paying for. Cars are not reliable these days like you said. Why don’t you look at all the recalls that forehead in the last 3 years. Here we are in 2024 and they’re the leader of recalls once again. A lot of this stuff is stupid nonsense that should already have worked the corks out over the decades. Some of the stuff is stupid stuff and some of it is Major stuff it’s a mixture of everything. He is no different GMS no different all these makers make garbage cars nowadays. It’s about the greedy CEOs and shareholders they want everything made cheap and they don’t want it to last. It’s called planned obsolescence if you don’t know what that means look it up. They’re not making cars to last anymore they are making it so they only last two hundred thousand miles and they fall apart. Toyota is already having some issues with their vehicles hopefully they’re not going to go down that path and be like everybody else. Cars have too many safety features really that you don’t need and a lot of times airbags won’t deploy if the car gets to a certain age. Your lap belt is always going to be the best bet. So cars are not reliable nowadays cuz they’re made cheap. Cars that were made in prior to 1980 lasted a hell of a lot longer with less technology. The less technology we have in cars are more reliable they’re going to be. When you have computer modules communicating with one another all it takes is one little failure to trigger at least five codes or more when it was just a simple thing that could have been fixed. Now you got a diagnose all those codes to figure out what triggered all those codes at the first place. Completely ridiculous. People should have the options what they want to order in a car and what they don’t want. The less technology that you don’t need the better off the car is going to be more reliable.

  5. So it is only a problem in Canada??? My 2023 Silverado 1500 has dumped cargo 3 times. Fortunately I did not cause an accident. When is the US recall coming?

  6. I am sick and tired of all the sensors and software bs. Currently waiting for my scanner to be delivered ( tomorrow) so that I don’t have to hear ” we will need to keep it for 24 hours “.Even though it is covered there is no way it takes 24 hours to scan and replace. Even doing a forced regen only takes 20 minutes.

  7. Bi directional scanner that I can also update my tire size which the dealer wanted 400 dollars to do. No printer capabilities but that is OK. My issue is a particulate matter sensor which I have verified and would change myself but going to let warranty pay for it. I know exactly where and what it is because I installed the banks monster exhaust on it because I didn’t like the exhaust blowing on my horse trailer spare tire especially when in the regen mode.

    1. Well my new scanner will store and has USB cable to connect to a laptop and then print capable. Definitely the particulate matter sensor, low voltage. I am not new to working on vehicles, 67 years old and have never taken any of my vehicles to a shop unless covered by warranty and that pisses me off with the bs they try to pull, oh I do have alignment done at a shop. Just trying to keep up with all the unnecessary stuff can keep you on your toes. Well enough of that I am going to take my big block camaro out and see how much rubber I can leave laying around.
