GM Adding 350,000 Miles Of Super Cruise Road Coverage

In a move that will almost double the technology’s geographic scope, GM just announced a 350,000-mile expansion of the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assistance system’s North American coverage.

The new augmentation will boost Super Cruise coverage from the current 400,000 miles to 750,000 miles of roads in the U.S. and Canada, the largest coverage of any such system in North America, with both divided highways and two-lane roads – including some small-town and rural routes – included in the added area. The new roads have started to be added incrementally through over-the-air-updates, and will continue through 2025.

GM also claims that Super Cruise is now capable of correctly navigating minor highways that connect smaller cities and townships, including some mapped roads that have cross traffic and intersections. If the vehicle’s cameras and radar detect crossing traffic, the system will assess the situation and change lanes, brake, or switch control back to the human driver, who needs to be ready to take over even when hands-free driving is active.

Nevertheless, two-lane roads now added to the network will continue to present some challenges. With rapidly changing conditions, Super Cruise driver monitoring can ensure attention but, as Consumer Reporters automotive test center director Kelly Funkhouser says, “there isn’t a mechanism to make sure that your hands are ready” and drivers could have a difficult time taking over quickly if their hands are full of food and drink.

The last major expansion to Super Cruise coverage came in late summer 2022, when the automaker added around 200,000 more miles to the existing 200,000 miles of coverage. Several popular models received the new coverage first, including the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban in mid-November, select GMC Yukon units at about the same time, and the Cadillac Escalade and Cadillac Escalade ESV luxury SUVs during the same month. However, Super Cruise-equipped Cadillac CT6, Cadillac XT6 and Chevy Bolt EUV units will not get this updated roadmap coverage.

According to Consumer Reports, the Super Cruise system is no longer the best active driving assistance technology as of 2023. Ford BlueCruise supplanted the GM system at the top thanks to its collaborative driving, which enables it to take over seamlessly again after the driver intervenes to carry out some action or maneuver.

However, The General may win back some ground by merging its Ultra Cruise technology with Super Cruise, bringing new advanced capabilities and features to the latter. Ultra Cruise was expected to be able to handle 95 percent of driving situations and to expand the available coverage massively to 3.4 million miles of American and Canadian roads.

  1. We have supercruise on 2 of our vehicles.
It works well but there are situations where it gets a bit wanky and you find yourself babysitting the steering wheel just incase. Some buttpucker here and there from passengers lol

  2. No matter how vividly GM states that the driver must stay engaged in the operation of the auto, there always will be some that will say they were not aware that the human driver is in charge of the automobile at all times.

  3. I read somewhere that GM hired a firm in Michigan to handle mapping.

Question – why doesn’t GM simply pay UPS and FedEx to put mapping sensors on UPS and FedEx trucks? They go everywhere on a continuous basis….

  4. Super Cruise has a driver monitoring system. If the driver is not paying attention to the road, the system will be disengaged.

    So what’s the purpose ?

  9. This is great news, and I look forward to similar updates to Ford’s BlueCruise. I just got a 23 Lincoln Corsair GT with BlueCruise 1.2 and have been really enjoying using it. I can’t wait for updates that match what GM is doing with Super Cruise. I don’t intend to pay for a subscription in the future, if I don’t get semi-regular updates. I’ll sell and get a GM vehicle with Super Cruise.

  10. So…on my 2017 and 2020 Cadillac CT6’s that are equipped with Super Cruise that I PAY for will not get the additional overage? Way to go GM! What is the point of me PAYING for Super Cruise when I don’t get the additional miles. Don’t get me wrong, I love the feature, but I’m getting the shaft.

I’ll bet China gets their updates regardless, just like they got the 2nd generation CT6 and all the US gets are the fugly SUV/CUV boxes and the POS Celestiq. Not all of us want the compact CT4 or CT5, which will probably go away soon to so that Mary can try to force EV’s down our throat. Way to go GM/Cadillac.
