Chevy Trax Is A Good Used Car For The Money, Study Finds

A new study finds that the Chevy Trax is the best five-year-old used car for the money, based on what the buyer will pay per 10,000 miles of average remaining lifespan at the time of purchase.

Research by iSeeCars carried out as part of the site’s “Best Used Cars for the Money for 2024” study pointed to the Chevy Trax as the most economical half-decade old vehicle and the Toyota Avalon as the best 10-year-old model.

The study looks at those used car models that have an average of 80,000 miles or more of remaining lifespan at a given age. It identified the Chevy Trax as a winner with around 120,000 miles of driving left on a typical example and an average price of $17,274.

This works out to $1,442 per 10,000 miles of remaining service in used examples of the Bow Tie’s subcompact crossover. A typical Chevy Trax at five years still has a robust 64.9 percent of its lifespan remaining according to the research. Second and third places behind the Trax were five-year used Honda Fit and Honda Insight vehicles with price per 10,000 miles remaining of $1,473 and $1,485 respectively.

Another GM vehicle, the Buick Encore, took fourth place at $1,492 per 10,000 miles.

Karl Brauer, an executive analyst at iSeeCars, remarked that “with the spike in used vehicle pricing over the past five years, buyers are seeking the best value for their used-car dollars.” The Best Used Cars for the Money for 2024 study is intended to provide “shoppers with a list of used cars they can purchase and rely on for many years.”

As for methodology, the study examined used car pricing information from 1.1 million pre-owned vehicle purchases made during September 2023 through December 2023. It also used odometer readings and survival probabilities from 312 million vehicles to model remaining lifespan, and combined the two data sets to find the most cost-effective five-year and ten-year models.

Earlier this month, Consumer Reports said the 2024 Chevy Trax is “a vehicle to avoid” based on low predicted future reliability. However, the 2024 Trax launched the subcompact crossover’s all-new second generation, while the Trax referred to in the iSeeCars study is mostly the first-generation model.

  1. I always found them to be pleasantly plump little potatoes. The Encore, on the other hand, is a petite pomme de terre agréablement dodue. Two cheers for GM!

  4. Trust me don’t, I have a 2 year old encore (Buick’s version of the Trax) and to say it’s horrible is an understatement mine just under 2 year old car has multiple seatbelt problems, a check engine light consistent, a license plate light fallen down, a halfway night blind reverse camera, a radio that turns itself down and you have to turn it back up nearly every time you get into it (Buick’s dealership acknowledged the problem but sorry there’s no update for your radio), at all of 23k and religious oil changes it already burns oil, transmission shifts like it has 200k miles (again the dealership is sorry but I have to give up my car for 2 weeks because they only have one transmission guy and they can’t give you a rental until they actually find a problem with it), it’s fairly slow, very cheap, quite uncomfortable for a newer vehicle just no.

  5. The Chevy Trax is junk.. I purchased mine used in June 2023… It was been nothing but a money pit.

June 2023… Replaced 9 spring bolts, 2 Serpentine belts, 2 tensioner pulley, water pump, camshaft manifold cover and gasket, gas cap.

October… Replaced TPMS in tires, replaced tires, front end alignment, headlight.

December… Replaced coil, spark plugs, purge valve assembly Solenoid, turbo wastegate actuator.

January 28th… Power steering went out, Trax went into limp mode. Can only go 30mph, speedometer and tach shut down.

Replaced battery and checked connections with heavy duty fuses.. Trax is currently not drivable, saving more money to have it towed and repaired AGAIN.

    1. What year is it and how many miles are on it. Was it a flood car. Some of your laundry list is maintenance, which everything with moving parts requires at some point.
