General Motors has released a safety recall for select units of the Chevy Silverado 1500, Chevy Tahoe, and Chevy Suburban due to defective air bags.
The problem: affected vehicles may have a condition where the front-driver air bag module, a replacement part manufactured by Autoliv, may contain an inflator that was built with a supplier / manufacturing defect. If this were to be the case, proper deployment of the air bag’s second-stage could be prevented in certain high-speed crashes.
The hazards: if affected vehicles are involved in a high-speed crash that triggers the second-stage deployment of the front-driver air bag, the inflator may not fill the air bag as completely and quickly as designed. As such, the driver could be at an increased risk of injury.
The fix: certified GM technicians are instructed to inspect affected vehicles and replace the air bag module as necessary, free of charge. It should take techs less than one hour to complete this repair.
Affected components: driver front air bag modules manufactured by Autoliv, and sold as replacement parts.
Affected vehicles:
- 2011 – 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500
- 2011 – 2012 Chevy Tahoe
- 2011 – 2012 Chevy Suburban
Number of affected vehicles: According to GM, a total of only six Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburban units are affected by the recall. In addition, the Detroit-based automaker has instructed dealerships to hold affected vehicles until this repair can be performed.
Owners should: General Motors will notify owners of affected vehicles via letter starting on March 25th, 2024 and instruct them to make an appointment with their local GM dealer. Any owners that are unsure whether or not their vehicle is affected by this recall can visit my.gm.com/recalls and type in their VIN to see any open recalls or other actions that may be active on it. 6?
They’ll be lines around several corners with this massive of a recall.
So an official GM recall is announced affecting only 6 specific vehicles produced 12-13 years ago out of a possible 1,080,416 total production assets? (GM Auth sales figures ‘11-‘12). Why not just have one tech rep contact the 6 possible owners?
Strange.
If there was real world issue, given the time and number produced, we would know if the air bags are defective.
07 Tahoe had a recall 2 years ago for faulty air bag in front passenger side got my recall serviced
My 1995 Chevy Caprice 9c1 former Massachusetts State Police car has 300,000 miles now sleeps in a heated and cooled tajmaul palace. Its former life was sloshing around in Boston and idling. The airbags were replaced in 2008 because the former owner got stick n the middle of a crash for profit by thugs in Lawrence Mass on 495 in Andover. I bet those new bags aren’t as good as the old ones.
