General Motors has released a safety recall for certain units of the Chevy Silverado HD due to an issue with the tailgate opening while driving. There’s also a stop-delivery order in effect for new or used vehicles in dealer inventory, meaning those units can’t be delivered to customers until the fix is applied.
The problem: affected trucks may have a condition where the tailgate’s electronic gate-release switch may short circuit due to water intrusion, which may cause the tailgate to inadvertently unlatch while the vehicle is in Park.
The hazards: if the tailgate where to become unlatched while driving, unsecured cargo may come out of the truck bed and create a road hazard, thus increasing the risk of a crash.
The fix: certified GM technicians will be instructed to inspect affected vehicles and replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, free of charge. Before this remedy is implemented, owners are advised to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving.
Affected components: tailgate.

I’ve been having the tailgate issue with my 2022 half ton GMC pickup since I bought it.
I e been having problems with the tailgate on my 2022 2500 since 2022. I’ve had countless switches replaced and I’ve been waiting for the latest switch on back order since October. The MultiPro tailgate was a very enhancing quality that assisted my GMC buying decision. It makes it very easy to get into the bed besides the other convenient cargo features. That said, it has to be operational to be a good feature and mine has been non-operational more than operational. It’s very maddening. I wrote a letter to customer service and CC’d many GM reps with the hopes that They could find me a switch. The GM rep sent me an email claiming that they have been trying to reach me but have been unsuccessful. They are LYING. There never once was a phone call from them. I don’t mind playing phone tag but I don’t need factory reps lying to me!
Does anyone in this site work in truck engineering and explain why this recall is 2500/3500 only?
I’m retired and my contacts are all retired years ago.
Anybody have actual knowledge?
Same here on my light duty Silverado. Have dumped cargo on road 3 times. There is a bulletin (Bulletin Title: #23-NA-112 – Inadvertent/Unwanted Tail Gate Opening – (Jun 29, 2023)). I have issued a formal complaint with NHTSA on January 3rd, 2024 with no response. This should be a recall item. I fortunately I dumped my cargo at <50 mph at did not cause an accident. Currently do not put cargo in bed, don’t trust the vehicle. Plan to bring to dealer asap. Feel for those who need to work with their trucks.
This issue has been in the owner Facebook pages for quite awhile, so not a new or unknown issue. Glad to see they are formally addressing it, though I haven’t had an issue yet.
My question now is are they going to replace my tailgate after it opened when pulling a trailer and damaged it.
What was wrong with the manual linkage to open your tailgate?
Nothing was wrong. Just stupid all linked components equals electronic trouble. GMLAN etc. these trucks will all be trouble in a few years. The diagnostic time required to fixing some of these problems will be cost prohibitive when they get older and well out of warranty.
All companies not just GM. Just read about a taillight with water intrusion in a ford that ended up keeping the truck from running right. Nothing but trouble.
Just all the companies using bus to carry signals to components. How many times do you see different electronics in the vehicle that glitch out and don’t activate properly.
What was wrong? Easy. The marketers got hold of something that worked and they fixed it…
Electric tailgate release.
Can’t wait for a remote electric ***-wiper .
So, on the Sierra HD which comes 1st going down the road? The tailgate drops … or the engine stalls ?
Keep up the good work, Mary .
More GM electronics bugs. If they screw when new, what will be happening when they are 10 years old?
Another good reason to buy a WT with as few electrical gadgets as possible. Or just plan to sell before the end of the warranty.
As referenced, This is a known issue with the Silverado and Sierra. 2019-2024 and they still don’t have a resolve for the moisture collecting on the switch. How about a sealed solution that doesn’t have the wires entering from the top? Gravity is not your friend in this design…
I sealed the drain holes on the indented handle on the top of the tailgate and still had two switches go bad after it was sealed. And yet there are other owners that never sealed the holes, park outside and go through car washes and have never had any switch problems. Go figure.
Running my VIN I’m also affected and drive a 1500 Sierra, it’s not all HD trucks gm authority
I had to laugh at the hazard. It says it can only happen when in park, but could create a road hazard if it were to open when driving and something falls out. It’s literally not possible because you don’t drive in park lol
I think the TSB was written by a crash test dummy.
