Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Tahoe and Suburban sales continue to dominate their segment during the fourth quarter of 2023 when ranked by sales volume on a combined basis, as they have for about two decades. This is despite the Bow Tie brand’s full-size SUV duo posting a combined 23 percent decrease in sales to 36,379 units. Similarly, sales of the GMC’s full-size duo, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, which are corporate cousins to the Tahoe and Suburban and share the same architecture, were down 16 percent for 19,121 deliveries.

Individually, the regular-length Tahoe (see running Chevy Tahoe sales) led again with a 16 percent slip in sales to 26,235 units. The Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales), which includes sales of the regular-length Expedition and extended-length Expedition Max, followed in second place with a 17 percent dip to 16,969 units. The regular-length GMC Yukon (see running GMC Yukon sales) placed third this time around with a 19 percent slide to 10,793 units, followed by the Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales), the Tahoe’s extended-length counterpart, in fourth with a 37 percent drop to 10,144 units, and the extended-length Yukon XL (see running GMC Yukon XL sales) in fifth with a 12 percent decrease to 8,328 units. Notably, the GMC SUVs also outsold the Ford duo as well. The Jeep Wagoneer, comprised of the regular-length Wagoneer and longer Wagoneer L (but not including the Grand Wagoneer), took sixth place with a 39 percent jump to 8,266 units. The Toyota Sequoia placed seventh, up from the bottom spot last quarter, with a 33 percent bump to 6,392 units as the redesigned 2023 Sequoia continues to hit the market. The Nissan Armada fell to last place with a five percent slip to 3,466 units.

The GM Authority Take

The Chevy Tahoe and Suburban duo continue leading the mainstream full-size SUV segment. Combined with their corporate cousins, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, GM accounts for three out of every five sales in this space. While competitors have launched new and updated models, a refresh of The General’s offerings arrives for the 2025 model year to take them on. In fact, even the GMC Yukon duo alone outsold the Expedition and the rest of the field. All four of these profitable GM models remain key to the automaker’s financial health.

That’s one reason why this past October, the UAW eventually expanded its strike to the GM Arlington plant in Texas, where these full-size SUVs are built, as contract negotiations stalled. But a GM-UAW labor contract was ratified in November. While sales of the whole segment were down, GM models still underperformed the average due to a pause in production that lasted nearly a month. Previously, the facility had been running at full capacity, with no room to produce more units.

With production picking back up and a refreshed 2025 Tahoe and 2025 Suburban boosting renewed interest in both nameplates, sales should improve when the updated models begin arriving at dealerships later in the year. This will further cement GM’s command of the lucrative full-size SUV segment. The upcoming refreshed Yukon and Yukon XL will only solidify this lead.

About Chevrolet Tahoe And Suburban

The 2024 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban arrive with just one change: The deletion of the Auburn Metallic color.

GM recently unveiled the refreshed 2025 Chevy Tahoe and refreshed 2025 Chevy Suburban, showcasing new styling, inside and out, as well as announcing a revised diesel engine option and new tech features.

The new 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine delivers more power and torque than the outgoing 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel. Design changes to the 2025 model finally make that powerplant option available on the Z71 trim level for the first time, which is incidentally the most popular trim for the full-size SUV.

Also, updated tech features include new trailering assists and the vaunted GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assistance feature. The updated duo also gets nine additional wheel combinations, including 24-inch alloy options.
