Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

The previous year-long upward trajectory in Chevy Bolt family sales came to an end during the fourth quarter of 2023 as competitor deliveries grew in the expanding mainstream EV segment. Bolt family sales fell for the first time since Q1 2022 with a 22 percent slide to 12,551 units and a combined 19 percent segment share, accounting for about a fifth of all segment deliveries.

On an individual basis, the Bolt EUV (see running Bolt EUV sales) took fourth with a 22 percent dip in sales to 8,762 units, while the Bolt EV (see running Bolt EV sales) placed sixth, also down 22 percent, but to 3,789 units. The Ford Mustang Mach-E (see running Ford Mustang Mach-E sales) held first place with a five percent uptick to 11,889 units, followed by the Volkswagen ID.4 in second with a 162 percent leap to 10,634 units, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 crossover in third with a 92 percent jump to 8,612 units. The Ioniq 6 sedan placed fifth with 4,681 deliveries. The Kia EV6, the Ioniq 5’s corporate cousin and platform mate, placed seventh with a 39 percent bump to 4,081 units, while the Nissan Ariya placed eighth with 3,765 deliveries. The Subaru Solterra took ninth with a 238 percent leap to 3,109 units, followed by the related Toyota bZ4X in 10th with a 189 percent jump to 2,843 units. The Solterra and bZ4X were developed jointly, and they share the same platform. Nissan’s other entry here, the dated Leaf, saw sales drop 57 percent to 1,348 units. Two newcomers to the list are the Kia EV9, which posted 1,118 deliveries as well as the Chevy Blazer EV (see running Chevy Blazer EV sales), which recorded 463 deliveries.

From a segment share standpoint, the Bolt EUV earned a 13 percent share, while the Bolt EV posted a six percent share, for a combined 19 percent share. The Mustang Mach-E posted an 18 percent share, followed by the ID.4 with a 16 percent share and the Ioniq 5 with a 13 percent share. The Ioniq 6 earned a seven percent share, while the EV6 and Ariya both held a six percent share. The Solterra posted a five percent share, followed by the bZ4X with a four percent share. The Leaf and EV9 each held a two percent share, while the Blazer EV earned a one percent share.

The mainstream EV segment accounted for 65,094 deliveries during Q4 2023, up 48 percent year-over-year, meaning that Bolt family sales significantly underperformed the segment average.

The two Chevy Bolt models compete in the mainstream electric vehicles (EV) passenger cars segment, in which we currently include all mainstream (non-luxury) BEVs including crossovers, hatchbacks, and sedans. As more EVs enter the market, there will enough similar vehicle types competing against each other to warrant a specific segment. At that time, we will break these out for more specific sales comparisons. Beyond the mainstream EV segment being discussed here, the remaining EV segment is the premium EV market that contains models from Tesla, Audi, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lucid, Cadillac, Jaguar and Genesis. Accordingly, we are not including Tesla models in the mainstream EV passenger car segment sales analysis, since they are premium/luxury models.

It’s also worth noting that Hyundai and Kia offer EV models that also include variants with an internal combustion engine (ICE) and/or hybrid (HEV) and/or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version. That includes the Hyundai Kona and Hyundai Ioniq (without a number), along with the Kia Niro. Consequently these models do not offer a direct comparison to the Chevy Bolt family. As a result, these particular Hyundai and Kia models are now no longer included in our analysis. A related Hyundai model, the similarly named Ioniq 5, is all-electric, replacing the original Ioniq. While the Ioniq 5 is a crossover the similarly named Ioniq 6 is an all-electric sedan.

The GM Authority Take

The decrease in Chevy Bolt family sales represents the first decrease in nearly two years during the fourth quarter of 2023. Even so, Chevrolet’s combined total outsold Ford’s lone entry, the Mustang Mach-E, as well as the rest of the individual models competing here.

However, the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate now sports four models, easily claiming top billing overall from a combined segment share basis. My, how things have changed in just one quarter, showing how quickly the burgeoning mainstream EV segment is growing and how rapidly it can change.

It also worth noting that the Bolts are now joined by the Blazer EV in the mainstream EV space, giving GM three mainstream all-electric entries among now 13 models. Since the Chevy Bolt family has been discontinued until the next-gen Bolt comes to market in the medium-term future, we expect Bolt figures to remain in the red.

About Chevrolet Bolt EV

The 2023 Chevy Bolt EV received only minor changes over the 2022 Chevy Bolt EV.

November a year ago, the Chevy Bolt EV received the 2023 U.S. ALG Residual Value Award along with two more models from GM, namely the 2023 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD and 2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup.

Furthermore, this past April, the Chevy Bolt EV was recognized as a 2023 AAA Car Guide winner by the Automobile Association of America in its small vehicle category.

About Chevrolet Bolt EUV

The 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV got notable changes over the inaugural 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV, namely a new Redline Edition and limited expansion of Super Cruise driving coverage.

November a year ago, the Chevy Bolt EUV received top marks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), specifically a five-star Overall Safety Rating, the highest score awarded by the agency.

Furthermore, December as year ago, Kelley Blue Book voted the 2023 Bolt EUV as the best new EV priced under $35,000.

However, this past March, the Chevy Bolt EV and Chevy Bolt EUV ranked significantly below the segment average in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. EV Experience Ownership Study. Additionally, Chevy took last place in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience Home Charging Study, which measures customer satisfaction with permanently mounted Level 2 home electric vehicle charging stations.

Last May, Kelley Blue Book reported that the 2023 Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV are the least expensive EVs to own over the span of five years in their respective category.

Both the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV ride on the GM BEV2 platform and utilize the same single-drive electric motor, which produces 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, driving the front wheels. It’s fed by a 65 kWh lithium-ion battery, which provides 259 miles of range per charge for the Bolt EV and 247 miles for the Bolt EUV.

However, Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV production is officially over, but a next-gen Chevy Bolt is on the way.

“Another key launch for us is the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt EV. I know there’s been some speculation in the market as to why we are developing a new Bolt EV. Our strategy is to build on the tremendous equity we have in the brand, and to do it as efficiently as possible,” GM CEO Barra said last year during an earnings presentation. “Our prior portfolio plans included several newly designed vehicles in the entry-level segment and a capital commitment of $5 billion over the next several years.”

And while the upcoming Bolt won’t be a clean-sheet redesign, it will include a new battery technology, namely the use of LFP battery cells as a cost-savings measure that also enables The General to bring the updated model faster to market. Furthermore, the updated model will utilize GM’s latest Ultium technology, its latest software, and the North American Charging Standard, or NACS, a charger type originally developed by Tesla. GM announced it would adopt NACS last June, with plans to integrate it into new GM EVs starting in 2025.

“In the process, we are saving billions in capital and engineering expense, delivering a significantly cost-improved battery pack using purchased LFP cells, we’re getting to market at least two years faster, and our unit costs will be substantially lower,” Barra said. “This will be our first employment in North America of LFP technology in the Ultium platform.”
