Back in January 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into the Fisker Ocean electric crossover for braking issues. Now, the EV rival to the upcoming Cadillac Optiq is facing another NHTSA safety-related probe for unintended vehicle movement.
Opened on February 14th, the latest NHTSA investigation into the all-electric crossover is related to complaints where owners allege that they were unable to shift into park or to shift into the intended position. As a result, the EV may move unintentionally or roll away. Notably, one of the complaints claimed that an injury was sustained.
It’s worth noting that there are roughly 4,000 Fisker Ocean units involved in this safety probe.
As a reminder, the Fisker Ocean stands as a direct rival to the Cadillac Optiq as the luxury marque’s all-electric crossover will soon hit the market. Positioned as Cadillac’s entry-level EV offering, the Optiq will be the fourth electric vehicle to join Caddy’s global EV portfolio behind the Cadillac Lyriq, Cadillac Celestiq and Cadillac Escalade IQ.
Unfortunately, details concerning the Optiq are sparse at the moment, as General Motors will release more information later this year. That being said, it’s expected that the GM BEV3 platform – the same architecture that the Lyriq, Celestiq, Chevy Blazer EV, and Chevy Equinox EV ride on – will underpin the Optiq, while motivation will be drawn from GM Ultium battery and GM Ultium Drive motor technologies. However, the exact output figures are unknown at this time.
In regard to availability, so far it’s been confirmed that the 2025 Cadillac Optiq will be sold in the U.S., China, Canada, and Mexico.
“Optiq will act as the entry point for Cadillac’s EV lineup in North America, slotting in below Lyriq as a luxury compact SUV,” a GM spokesperson stated. “Optiq’s spirited driving dynamics are designed to appeal to global luxury customers. Additional details, features and pricing will be unveiled next year.”
It’s worth noting that at least one more Cadillac EV is expected, the 2026 Cadillac Vistiq that debuted in December.

This is one company I am not so bullish on it surviving. I have seen two in the wild streets of NJ but nowhere near as many Rivians and especially Teslas. I even seen more Hummer EVs than these. A shame because the Ocean is quite quirky and interesting.
