Cadillac Blackwing Magnesium Wheels Still Not Available, But Still Under Consideration

The Cadillac Blackwing sedans, including the Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing and Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, are two of the most track-capable production vehicles to ever wear the Cadillac crest, packing a ton go-fast goodies sure to delight enthusiasts. Back in October of 2020, Cadillac announced that the Blackwing sedans would eventually offer magnesium wheels. Unfortunately, a magnesium wheel option has yet to manifest, but according to Cadillac, it may still happen sometime in the future.

According to a Cadillac spokesperson, the luxury marque is still considering a magnesium wheels option for its top-performance four-doors:

“The team continues to explore opportunities to offer magnesium wheels, but nothing to share today,” the Cadillac spokesperson said. “In the meantime, Cadillac did debut aluminum alloy wheels with a tech bronze finish that provide a similar look as the wheels previewed in 2020. These wheels are available on the V-Series Blackwing lineup today.”

The wheels referenced are the 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels with Tech Bronze finish (RPO code RRR), which are a $1,500 option for the Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing, as well as the 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels with Tech Bronze finish (RPO code RHL), which are a $1,500 option for the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.

While these aluminum wheels with a Tech Bronze finish do indeed present similar styling as the magnesium wheels previewed in 2020, they do not provide the same performance benefits as a true magnesium wheel. For those readers who may not know, magnesium is roughly 33 percent lighter than aluminum, which could make a significant difference in unsprung weight when equipped by the Cadillac Blackwing sedans. A set of ultra-lightweight magnesium wheels would likely provide a variety of performance benefits, including crisper acceleration, improved turn-in, and better braking, all of which should help shave off a few tenths on the racetrack. Lightweight wheels can also improve vehicle fuel efficiency, although that’s likely a perk that’s low on the priority list for Cadillac Blackwing owners.

  1. I had to wait a year for my heated steering wheel. They can wait just like I did.

However, instead of magnesium wheel option, how about putting a spare tire into it? I’m sure that will be more of an issue than what kind and type of wheel is installed. Flat tires don’t care.
