Buick Encore Is A Good Used Car For The Money, Study Finds

The Buick Encore is one of the top four best five-year-old used cars for the money according to the “Best Used Cars for the Money for 2024” study put out by iSeeCars, with a typical Encore offering plenty of remaining lifespan and a low cost per 10,000 miles.

The study by iSeeCars showed that the Buick Encore is also among the top ten 10-year-old used cars, making a potentially good choice for a purchaser looking for a pre-owned Tri-Shield vehicle regardless of its age.

The compact crossover places fourth among the top 5-year-old used cars in the study with an average price of $18,632. Given that a Buick Encore five years old or younger still has a remaining lifespan of 124,852 miles, this works out to $1,492 per 10,000 miles. This figure is just $50 more per $10,000 than the overall winner, the Chevy Trax. In terms of percentage, the typical used Encore in this age category has 67.6 percent of its useful life remaining.

For 10-year Buick Encore crossovers – that is, vehicles 10 years old or newer, but older than 5 years – 82,471 miles or 44.7 percent of lifespan is remaining on average. At a typical price of $12,784, this works out to $1,550 per 10,000 remaining miles, putting it in eighth place behind various Honda, Toyota, and Mazda models.

Executive analyst Karl Brauer singled out the Encore as one of the best used cars, noting “for less than $13,000 a vehicle like the Buick Encore or Mazda CX-9 still has more than 40 percent of its lifespan remaining.” He added, “used car buyers on a tight budget can still find plenty of life left in these 10-year-old cars.”

The crossover’s position near the top of the 20 best five-year used cars added to its outstanding performance compared to many other vehicles. Brauer summarized by saying “the price of used vehicles remains historically high, but these 20 models represent excellent value.”

The study narrowed the field by eliminating any vehicles that didn’t have at least 80,000 (10-year) or 100,000 (5-year) miles remaining. It utilized used car prices from 1.1 million pre-owned vehicle purchases from the last four months of 2023, while remaining lifespan was estimated using odometer data from 312 million vehicles.

  1. The LE2 engine versions, maybe. The LUV is a turd.

Numerous and varied issues with the LUV! It’s basically guaranteed to destroy the intake manifold eventually, amongst many other things.

  2. iSeeCars blows it yet again (why do folks read their garbage). According to reliable Consumer Reports, it’s a turd with very iffy reliability. So is the GX, so far.

  3. There is no mention in this rating scheme of reliability, cost to repair, etc. So basically, it rates a car high if the used car price is low, and it will last a reasonable/average lifespan before completely imploding. Again, no mention of how much it takes to get it to that milestone. (This from an owner of a 2016, who is wondering how long I should keep this thing.) Any rating that puts the (old) Chevy Trax above the Encore has to be suspect right out of the box!

    1. Depends on how it is taken care of as well.

  4. Buick encore is junk. My 2016 has 52,000 and has had the turbo replaced, O2 sensors and a rusted exhaust system. Its been very costly. I’ve kept up with all the maintenance since purchasing it new. I’ve spent $4000 in repairs. My mechanic said they are junk built with cheap parts and the GM motors are junk. There is a buick forum and all complaints are the turbo going out with 50,000 miles or less. I will never purchase another buick. They look good but not a good purchase. Be aware there is lots of recalls unfortunately the turbo is not one.

    1. There are others who have had no issues. I do sympathise with you, but generally I am sure that not every one had problems.

      1. Check the forums. The LUV is trash and the vehicle surrounding it isn’t much better.

I do think the quality improved somewhat for the 2019+ models though.

          1. Stop defending this vehicle. I and many others have had a host of problems. Not putting another dime in this car. Once the CEL comes on again, it’s out the door.

            1. I am not defending it. It is also foolish to say a Toyota is problem free as well. Rav4s have plenty of serious issues.

              1. You’re the only one who brought Toyota into this discussion.

The Encore stands on its own merits — or lack thereof.
