2023 Chevy Colorado Recalled For Unexpected Emergency Braking Activation

GM has issued a product recall for certain examples of the 2023 Chevy Colorado for an issue related to the pickup’s automatic emergency braking system. The system can unexpectedly trigger, which can result in the pickup abruptly stopping.

The problem: affected units may exhibit a condition wherein the onboard automatic emergency braking system will unexpectedly activate, causing the vehicle to suddenly stop or slowdown. This issue is the result of the front camera module system falsely detecting an obstacle, trigging the automatic emergency braking system to engage.

The hazards: if the onboard automatic emergency braking system does unexpectedly activate and suddenly slows the vehicle, it may increase the risk of a crash.

The fix: in order to fix this issue, dealers are instructed to update the front camera module system software, free of charge. General Motors has also issued a stop-delivery order, as expected for a safety-related recall.

Affected components: front camera module system software, which is designed to detect obstacles.

Affected vehicles: vehicles affected by this recall include certain units of the 2023 Chevy Colorado.

Number of affected units: it’s estimated that this recall affects 47,708 units of the 2023 Chevy Colorado.

Owners should: GM will mail notification letters to affected owners by April 8th, 2024, instructing owners to make an appointment with their local dealer.

  2. GM. Always late to the party. Honda Idiocy vans were doing this back in 2018! (speaking from experience)

  3. When it comes to driving, vehicles should not be doing anything automatically. Doing something automatically requires a software’s interpretation of a situation to be both correct and applicable, and for the hardware that provided the data to the software to be functional.

Weather, light, shadows, all reek havoc with sensors and cameras, on tops which, sensors and cameras themselves can simply just fail. If this isn’t bad enough, you are also trusting that the people that wrote the software are both competent and thought of everything.

And the icing on the cake, even when all the hardware and software are working correctly, what the vehicle deems to be a correct action, could actually be inappropriate for the situation. The vehicle slamming the brakes upon detecting a “too close” object in front of you IS NOT correct when you intentionally did this and need the speed to get out the way of being hit by something else not detected or even monitored by the safety system.

  4. I don’t have one, but I’d hope there is a way to deactivate AEB and owners should do so if there is until the fix.

    1. You deactivate the automatic breaking. You can just set it to alert you. I had a 2019 Terrain with AEB and it worked great. Seems there is just a few bugs in the software the needs fixed on the new Colorado’s. I have yet to have issue with mine.

Cruise cars in California were dragging people. This is why i tell eveyone autonomus cars will only work if they are the only cars on the road.

      1. Another example why I hate all this new “safety” and computer crap being mandatory or required on new vehicles without a way to turn it off!

    2. My ’24 Terrain you tap the “A” button and it’s “Off” .

  5. I always wondered why Asian cars seem to offer more standard safety devices on there cars than gm had/offered I think I know why now. They don’t seem to be able to integrate software with the hardware. Going away from physical switching most be financial so all the resent stop sales will continue until someone wakes up at gm and goes back to old school dependable dashboards. Wake up gm, every week it’s something new.

  6. More software bs. Get rid of all the software and we can spend more time driving than getting software updates at the dealership. I don’t need software to do my braking, let me know what the fluid levels are, to turn my headlights on ect. How did people get by before all the software, oh yeah we spent more time enjoying life and not sitting in the dealership waiting room.

  7. GM was late to the autonomous safety gear and obviously still has some catching up to do. I really like the looks of the Colorado and the packaging but at this point I wouldn’t touch one with a 10-foot pole. It’s academic anyway as with all the stop sale orders, there are none available.

  8. And JP Powers or some other car guru said this is number one truck off the year, is someone getting their pockets padded with cash. Is there anything right with this truck other than tires are round, haven’t seen a recall on them yet

  9. People doing everything but paying attention to driving need this stuff. The distractions fostered in part by the manufacturers. Vicious circle.

  10. I would like to know why they are not issuing a recall notice till April?? I just had this happen while I was driving a work Colorado. I was a very sudden stop, no warnings no slowing down, which has left me with a whip lash!! Thank god I was only doing 50 kmh when it happened. I had just been on the highway doing 90kph, and sure would not have wanted it to have done it then. This recall should be going out now, what if I had had children in the car?? I would like to hear from you on this.

  11. Is this covered the the ”Lemon Law” since its a safety issue? I will always doubt this ”Tail Boss” even after its fixed. Who knows if an update really fixed anything. 2023 Trail Boss, 11,000, this happened yesterday and now I’m scared to drive the dam thing.

  13. This happened to me while driving yesterday in my ’23 Colorado. It was a terrifying experience, but I was glad nobody was behind me. I was going about 40 mph in the rain, and the truck came to a complete stop. Dropping it off in the AM.
