Thieves Attempt To Steal Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon Off Carrier Train In Mexico

A group of thieves were thwarted in their attempt to steal brand-new units of the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon off a carrier train in Mexico last week. The attempt resulted in several destroyed trucks, however, none of the pickups were actually stolen. An investigation is currently ongoing.

As spotted by The Drive, news of the attempted Fast and Furious reenactment was posted to social media by the Emergencias Region Centro Sur Facebook page. According to the post, the would-be thieves managed to pry open the doors to a train wagon carrying the trucks. The incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. local time last Thursday near San Felipe, located in the municipality of Gomez Palacio, Durango. Police were reportedly patrolling along the parallel Gomez Palacio-Gregorio Garcia highway, and stopped to investigate after seeing one of the GM pickups falling out of the train wagon, its rear end resting on the train tracks. Ferromex security was then notified. The thieves escaped, but left the trucks in some rather precarious positions.

According to The Drive, which cites an anonymous source, the perps are believed to be part of a local gang, rather than members of a cartel.

Looking over the photos, we see a white Chevy Colorado Z71 half unloaded from a train wagon, its tailgate sporting a sizable dent in it. Additionally, a silver GMC Canyon Denali is seen mangled and crumpled, the result of a collision with a train after the truck was left on the tracks.

Per the social media post, a criminal complaint was filed with the Investigating Agent of the Public Ministry, which is now conducting an investigation.

As a reminder, the 2023 model year ushered in a brand-new third generation for the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon nameplates. Both pickups are produced at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.
