General Motors is currently expanding the GM Lake Orion plant in Michigan, with an enormous new structure being added on the plant’s south side. GM Authority sources indicate that the structure takes up an entire parking lot in terms of the size of the footprint. It’s believed that this new expansion will support the production of new GM electric vehicles.
The GM Lake Orion facility is located in Lake Orion, Michigan, situated roughly 30 miles north of Detroit at 4555 Giddings Road. The new structure is facing the adjacent Brown Road.
As GM Authority reported last year, General Motors has delayed the start Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV production at the Lake Orion facility. Production was originally expected to begin late in the 2024 calendar year, but is now expected to begin late in 2025.
Back in 2022, General Motors announced $6.5 billion in investments for the GM Orion and GM Delta Township Assembly plants to support new EV production. The GM Lake Orion facility was originally slated to receive a new battery assembly line.
According to GM, the delay in Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV production at the Lake Orion facility was to help the automaker “better manage capital investment while aligning with evolving EV demand.” It believed that the delay may indicate lower-than-expected demand for all-electric vehicles.
The GM Lake Orion facility first opened in 1983. Over 1,000 workers are employed at the facility. The facility currently covers 4.3 million square feet on 433 acres. The facility made the switch to all-electric vehicle production in 2020 in support of GM’s goal to bring 30 new EVs to market globally by the 2025 calendar year. Products previously produced at the facility include the Chevy Bolt EV and Chevy Sonic, as well as the Buick Verano and Pontiac G6.

Wow, GM still hasn’t learned?! Now even Tesla is floundering due to slowing demand for EV’s. Even more damaging to their religion was the recent cold weather that exposed their vulnerabilities and the superiority of ICE vehicles.
So lets see if the stupids let there battery get to near 0 thats good just before a storm? And likewise if the stupids let their gas tanks get down to 1/10 a tank just before a storm that can’t be good either. Enough said.
What a bunch of morons haven’t learned and won’t learn it’s all about the current president making a lot of money after all his family is invested to about 10% of a battery making situation over in China why do you think he’s pushing so hard for EVS including anyone who is they are heavily invested in that technology to make a lot of money for themselves you think China and India are going to do that don’t bet on it United States is relatively small compared to the rest of the world and therefore whatever we do is going to be canceled out anyway as far as the so-called climate it’s just an agenda in the United States keeps going downhill and playing into China’s hands they own almost all the raw materials I believe 75% at least that takes to make batteries the late great USA again enjoy it now won’t be around much longer
Wow. Almost 100% of what you typed is just wrong.
Did you maybe miss where Biden’s administration worked to pass legislation to bring that manufacturing and production to the US?
It the US cannot get competitive for domestic EV and battery production, the US auto market absolutely will get overrun with cheap Chinese imports.
ICE vehicles had way more problems in the cold weather than EVs did.
My parents and sister had 3 of their ICE cars die because of the cold snap. My EV was fine.
Thanks for the update. Hopefully this delay will give the plant the ability to produce ICE vehicles and Hybrids as well as EVs. For now, I think Factory Zero can handle the demand.
Better prepare to convert it back to ICE vehicles.
This delay has impacted a lot of workers. Especially for new hires who started early last year. Closing a plant and leaving people unemployed for a year or longer is absurd.
This is good news that the expansion is underway this early in 2024. Factory Zero and Mexico can perfectly handle GMs output for now but getting this and Kansas up and running is much needed for the up and coming models.
Bring back production of the Camaro!!!! Help pay for the repair of Brown Road, worst road in Michigan!!!
People won’t be unemployed for two years, they are getting picked up at other plants. As far as the storm, what ever happened to having your vehicle ready for a storm. I’ve owned my EV for two years and have yet to have an issue with charging. And this negative talk about EV’s probably parallels the talk from the horse and buggy people about the ICE vehicles. Backward thinkers!
As a retired salary employee of GM, I’m glad I’m im my mid 80’s so I won’t be around when GM goes all electric and goes belly up and shuts down completely do to pour sales.
If they were smart they would build an electric car with an gasoline engine that could charge the batteries. BUT that ain’t going to happen
How typical that the Narcissist “leaders” at GM, including Barra, have not gotten the message yet that the market is very clear about on the subject of EV dislike by the vast majority of the buying/driving public. If they continue to ignore reality, we taxpayers will be expected to bail them out, again, just like we did in 2008.
Wonder if they are keeping the Bolt EV line to bring the Bolt 2.0 to market quicker, and adding new space for the Sierra EV and expansion of the Silverado EV production.
Hopefully it can be converted back to ICE or hybrid vehicle production. I think it is safe to say the consumer is screaming that they do not want an EV. The more that hit the road the more people are finding out they are a total nightmare.
