GM Releases Fix For 2023 GMC Canyon Moaning Or Howling Rear Axle Noise

GM has released a new service bulletin for the 2023 GMC Canyon to address a moaning or howling noise around the rear end of the vehicle. The new service bulletin is tagged with bulletin number 23-NA-208, and only applies to 2023 model-year vehicles. The bulletin was initially released in November of 2023. The fix may involve pulling the axle shafts.
According to the bulletin, some 2023 GMC Canyon customers may experience a condition wherein their pickup emits a moaning, howling, or growling noise around the rear end. The bulletin states that this condition may be caused by the outer bearing surface on the rear axle shafts, which could exhibit machining chatter on the surface for the bearing.
If the differential carrier bearings are not the root cause of this issue, the bulletin says that the axle shafts should be pulled and inspected. If chatter marks are observed on the axle shaft, then the bearing, the seal, and the axle shaft itself will need to be replaced. If the axle shaft needs to be replaced, it’s estimated that the labor time required to address this issue could take around two-and-a-half hours.
As a reminder, the 2023 GMC Canyon introduces the midsize pickup’s all-new third generation. Compared to the preceding 2022 model year, the 2023 Canyon debuts new exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, a new engine, and a wealth of modern tech features.
In terms of exterior dimensions, the 2023 GMC Canyon is taller and wider than the previous generation, while LED lighting provides the illumination. The overhauled cabin features either an eight-inch instrument cluster or an 11-inch instrument cluster, depending on the trim level selected.
As for the mechanical specs, all 2023 GMC Canyon variants are equipped with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. The updated 31XX-2 platform provides the underpinnings, while production takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

I can’t believe it! Now junk rearends to go with their junk transmissions and questionable engines?! What the hell is going on at GM???? GM leadership must be replaced now!
You do realize the parts are made by a supplier and all parts are not inspected. So there was probably a group of bad parts got out before it was caught.
That’s on GM 100%!! Low quality suppliers provide low quality parts.
Wow I guess they still haven’t fired the VP over Supply Chain and Sourcing, should have been gone long ago.
It’s sad. They probably go to the cheapest supplier and that’s what you get, $hit parts. I had to have the torque tube replaced on my 2023 Chevy Blazer. Thank God it was under warranty.
I’ve been wanting a new truck but maybe should just keep what I have.
I am having the same thoughts.
gm rearends have moaning and groaning since the 60s and 70s when the ones still used today went into production.
Usually you still have 50 000 miles before they go kablooey.
I’ve mostly driven Ford trucks since the 70’s but bought my first new Silverado in 13 and it’s been almost perfect.
OMG….another fix….that’s all I seem to be reading about GM’s….I ordered a 2024 canyon…should I get rental car rider on my insurance policy…I drove domestic cars and trucks for yrs before switching to imports…had 3 Audi’s virtually trouble free but I need a pick up now….Oh boy, what am I in for 🤪
I have the 23 Canyon Denali and absolutely LOVE it! I don’t have any of the issues spoken about here!!
Been buying Chevy trucks since 1989. Need to buy a truck now, but with all the problems that
GM is having , don’t dare to spend $53 -$67 on a product from GM. Denting roofs on Colorados and Canyons, Spitting roofs on Silverados and Sierras now rear axle issues with their midsize trucks. Get serious GM how along have you been building trucks. You can only cut corners so much and it will come back to bite you.
Question: AAM the supplier? Also, Ring gear diameter? AAM for decades been an excellent powertrain supplier. Hard to imagine them changing their process control testing measures. Had to have been a batch build that was undetected when it left the Mexico manufacturing facility. TBD
Maybe you should check out the Ford recalls
Ram engine issues
I live in Canada and had ordered a Canyon Denali in October but no further info. The other day I went to the dealer and got my deposit back, the salesman said he does not like ordering/selling Canyons as they were presold or none coming. I drove to the Toyota Dealer and ordered a 24 Taco Limited Hybrid. Came home and saw pictures of the attempted Denali theft and then possible rear end moaning and the price now listed for the same truck is $2,100.00 CAD more. I feel happy for the ones who own a Canyon and are enjoying it, but we only hear the bad stuff hopefully a small percent. We see alot of TV shows about searching for lost treasure and aliens, but how about one that dwells into the mystery of mid sized trucks and obtaining one. Multiple seasons worth of content.
A true fact, when people have a compliant they will tell at least five others. About have the complaints here are half truths such the roof splitting. On this forum most complaint are from non owners of GM trucks. Many just repeat misinformation.
I asked my dealer about the roof denting and splitting and they have heard nothing nor have they received any bulletins from the factory. An issue like this would definitely be made known if true. Why do people have to bull sh*t so much?
Your always going to have those with problems complaining more. Gm I’m sure gets there axles from probably where everyone else does. Go on other forums you find people with problems from all makes.
My 2022 Silverado has the same noise as described in this post. Must say I’m pretty disappointed in Chevrolet. But mostly in me for buying it on a whim . Now I’m stuck with a $50,000 piece of $hit. Best thing on the truck is the aftermarket lift kit , tires and wheels. Everything else is cheap junk.
Did you ever think of having it repaired under warranty or did it happen after warranty expired?
These kinds of problems have been around since Henry Ford was putting out model Ts. It’s that with modern manufacturing and SPC and QC, many of these types of issues get addressed and are eliminated. Today’s automobiles are the most reliable in history. That being said, the public has now become conditioned to expect “perfect products”, and get irate when expectations are not met.
Not knowing the full story on this issue, it is not clear if the problem is with the axle manufacturer or the bearing manufacturer. At least it is being addressed with a recall. In the old days, they just let it go and the rest was on the buyer.
I agree. With all of the new vehicles I have owned, most have had no issues and those that did were corrected by the dealer. Back in the ‘70s and ‘80s you really had to fight to get your new care issues corrected. Things are better today.
What is the wait time on the tacoma.
Spring/Apr is Taco time for the hybrids, but I was told some gas models are already in the pipeline. I still have Love for my 09 GMC sierra, it has been and remains Awesome. It’s time for a smaller truck and the non plug hybrid sounds like a great step for me and the planet. The Canyon is still a nice lookin truck, but not on the train track. I do wonder though that if the train cars are “tagged” with spray paint, wouldn’t the vehicles get some of that too if there are holes? Now that’s a custom paint job.
I looked at th 24 Toyota taco, totally new design as are the big 3 manufactures mid size line up…off to the automotive show in Feb….maybe ther someone there can deliver me a new pick up before next Christmas.
And yes GM has a service bulletin regarding the roof split, and didn’t I here last yr that a pile of canyons waiting for delivery got damaged in a hail storm. Now I’m not sure if if I will buy a GM product….
Can you direct me to where I can obtain a service bulletin on the roof problems with the Colorados and Canyons?
Ther was an article on this site not long ago regarding gm’ s fix for the roof.
Evidently some people on this forum are not up on the latest problems going on.GM posted on this forum about the roof splitting issues on the passenger side of the 2024 Silverados and Sierras that they are having along with the roof denting on the Colorados and Canyons. Seen this myself on a friend’s truck . All this information has been posted by GM themselves.
My dealer must be lying to me about not knowing about roof issues.
As far as some 2024Silverado and Sierra roofs cracking on passenger side the Bulletin is
N232421270. As far as 2023 Colorado and Canyons with roofs denting , just past the top of the windshield, this is occurring after going through touchless car washes. GM is working on a fix for this problem. Weak area in roof. Trucks with a sunroof is not an issue because of the extra bracing. At the moment GM talks about Paintless dent repair. Bulletin #99-08-51-001F. Not sure how they will stop this issue for those trucks already sold.
GM builds over 700,000 PU’s per model year. The bulletins never mention the cause. So why does 3,000 or so units have this problem? Bad stamping of the panels? A bad batch of steel?
My 23 Canyon is getting new axles right now… pissed and unhappy!
