As the entry-level luxury sedan in the Cadillac lineup, most folks may not realize that the CT4 is actually capable of towing. For those who find themselves in this camp, today we’re taking a closer look at 2024 Cadillac CT4 towing capacities in the following GM Authority breakdown.
Before diving in, here’s a brief overview of the CT4’s powertrain configurations. Engine options include the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LSY gasoline engine, rated at 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque (or 325 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque in the CT4-V), and the twin-turbocharged 3.6L V6 LF4 gasoline engine, rated at 472 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque.
Transmission options consist of the GM eight-speed automatic transmission, the GM 10-speed automatic transmission, or the Tremec six-speed manual transmission, while axle ratios stand at either 2.85 or 3.73.
With that covered, here’s the breakdown of 2024 Cadillac CT4 towing capacities:
2024 Cadillac CT4 Towing Capacities
Trim Level | Drivetrain | Turbo 2.0L I4 LSY | Turbo 2.7L I4 L3B | Twin-Turbo 3.6L V6 LF4 | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Axle Ratio | Max Trailer Weight (lbs / kg) | Axle Ratio | Max Trailer Weight (lbs / kg) | Axle Ratio | Max Trailer Weight (lbs / kg) | ||
Luxury | RWD | 2.85 | 1,000 / 454 | - | - | - | - |
Luxury | AWD | 2.85 | 1,000 / 454 | - | - | - | - |
Premium Luxury | RWD | 2.85 | 1,000 / 454 | 2.85 | 1,000 / 454 | - | - |
Premium Luxury | AWD | 2.85 | 1,000 / 454 | 2.85 | 1,000 / 454 | - | - |
Sport | RWD | 2.85 | 1,000 / 454 | - | - | - | - |
Sport | AWD | 2.85 | 1,000 / 454 | - | - | - | - |
CT4-V | RWD | - | - | 2.85 | 0 | - | - |
CT4-V | AWD | - | - | 2.85 | 0 | - | - |
CT4-V Blackwing with 6-speed manual | RWD | - | - | - | - | 3.73 | 0 |
CT4-V Blackwing with 10-speed automatic | RWD | - | - | - | - | 2.85 | 0 |
As evidenced above, the maximum a CT4 can tow is 1,000 pounds (or 454 kilograms), while the performance-focused CT4-V and CT4-V Blackwing variants are not rated for any hauling activities.
It’s worth noting that the CT4 is not offered with an OEM tow hitch, thus the owner must find a compatible aftermarket setup. In addition, while the LSY engine can run on 87 octane fuel if premium fuel is unavailable, General Motors suggests that drivers use a minimum of 89 octane fuel or higher while towing. Failure to do so risks damaging the engine, which wouldn’t be covered under warranty.
As a reminder, the CT4 rides on the GM Alpha 2 platform, while North American production takes place at the GM Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan.

Are there any compact trailers out there that weigh under 1K lbs.? For a small car with a max limit of 1K lbs., I doubt anyone is thinking about towing with it but themselves, groceries, suitcases, sporting equipment and etc separately.
Harbor Freight sells small open trailers that weigh just under 500 lbs. My lawn tractor weighs 500 lbs. That’s 1000 lbs. 25 big bags of mulch is maybe 500 lbs. Well 1000 pounds towing capacity can be practical for some.
It’s practical for me. I have a harbor freight trailer that is just under 275 lbs and I use it for plywood. Usually no more than 3-4 sheets at a time. However, I’m a woodworker and need a way to get wood from the yard to home.
What’s unusual about this? Things have been this way almost forever. If you want a good hitch, go to Draw-Tite, or many of the other aftermarket hitch manufacturers out there. They have been doing that for decades. Some companies will build you a custom hitch for your vehicle.
…likely can tow longer and farther than an F-150 Lightning without stopping.😉
Love the caparison! Right on the mark.
My sister did not want a SUV, but a sedan to replace her high mileage BMW. Her husband & I suggested the CT4. Her 2023 model owned less than 6 months is back at the dealer for the third time under warranty. Fan motor replacement, brake issue & now A8 shutter. She likes the car, but says it’s back to BMW or Lexus next. I feel bad for her & my wife wants to “upgrade” from her 2020 Equinox LT(great ownership experience) to a Cadillac XT4 & I’m getting concerned to make the purchase. Lifetime GM owner, 15 vehicles, 5 bought new.
Our friends just bought a new GMC Yukon. The factory-installed hitch was mis-welded, so that the retaining pin holes were on the top and bottom of the hitch, instead of on the sides. You just can’t make this stuff up.
I’m wondering what hitch will fit a CT4? I would like to carry my bicycle and use my hitch mount rack. Would never tow with my CT4.
I bought my my hitch at Curt Hitches
I once towed a Toyota Corolla wagon behind a 1978 Buick LeSabre with a V6, and just a small hitch bolted to the bumper. No problem!! Most setups are well underrated for safety reasons. You can probably get away with slightly more than that 1,000 pound rating. Just don’t think you can pull your pickup truck out the ditch just because you have that hitch!!!
Article states fuel octane levels required for the Lsy that it can run on 87 but shouldn’t use to tow. What about the other engines L3b, LF4. How about finishing the article concerning octane requirements. Thanks in advance
Can the 2025 CT4 Tow the same amount?
