Chevy Malibu One Of The Best New Cars For The Money, Study Finds

The Chevy Malibu is one of the best new cars for the money, per a new study examining average new car prices and average vehicle lifespan.

The new study was published by iSeeCars and is based on an analysis of more than 8.3 million new cars sold between September and December of the 2023 calendar year, as well as the odometer readings of more than 181 million used cars from the organization’s “Longest Lasting Cars Study”. The analysis compared the average list price for each model to the average vehicle lifespan in miles to calculate the average price per 10,000 miles.

In the list of the top 25 best cars for the money, the Chevy Malibu was ranked 18th, with an average price per 10,000 miles of $1,944, recording an average new car price of $27,667 and an average lifespan of 142,332 miles. The Chevy Malibu was situated below the Subaru Forester ($1,850 per 10,000 miles, $36,018 average new car price, 194,651 miles average lifespan) and above the Subaru Outback ($1,970 per 10,000 miles, $39,809 average new car price, 202,033 miles average lifespan).

At the top of the top 25 list was the Mitsubishi Mirage with an average price per 10,000 miles of $1,099 ($18,991 average new car price, 172,784 miles average lifespan), followed by the Toyota Corolla ($1,374 per 10,000 miles, $25,017 average new car price, 182,133 miles average lifespan) and Subaru Impreza ($1,409 per 10,000 miles, $27,830 average new car price, 197,562 miles average lifespan).

The Chevy Malibu was fifth on the list of the top five midsize cars for the money, with the Honda Accord taking the top spot at $1,432 per 10,000 miles ($30,321 average new car price, 211,772 miles average lifespan).

“Midsize sedans aren’t as popular as they used to be, but they still provide a strong combination of passenger comfort and useful cargo space,” said iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer. “And the models on this list also deliver excellent value.”

As a reminder, the Chevy Malibu features the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LFV gasoline engine and rides on the GM E2 platform. Production for the North American market takes place at the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City.

    1. You said it> It’s a RENTAL. Who would own one and boast about it??

  2. If Chevrolet and GM keep this car in production, I may buy one. However, Barra is so erratic in her decision making the Malibu may be canceled. If this is the case, I guess a Camry is in my future.

  3. I assume that they fixed all the reliability issues that plagued the ’16-’18s. So, where is the new one?

  4. You can’t really compare a Corolla to a Malibu, maybe a Cruz to a Corolla. The Malibu is much more comfortable, powerful and safer. Better car all around.

  5. I have a funny feeling that General Motors could soon end production on the Chevy Malibu after nine generations, isn’t that horrible?

  6. Although its extremely dated, its aged very well. Where is the new one? Another poor decision by GM management and I’m a GM guy!

  7. Malibu 2023 sales – 130,341
    GM EV 2023 sales – 75,883

The ageing Malibu outsells all GM EVs by a 2 to 1 margin. Why does GM even bother selling EVs . I know dealers are tired of them piling up on their lots

  8. A new one is on the way for 2025 or 2026. They know they need it. But it taking time to get it out.

  9. GM should be strongly marketing this vehicle as the only domestic sedan available. It’s in a class by itself. There are still consumers who want sedans instead of SUV’s. Personally, I like the security of a lockable trunk to hide valuables instead of the open glass of SUV’s.

  10. We wanted a secondary vehicle (main is a newer Tahoe) that was not expensive but nice to drive and the Malibu fit the bill. We bought a 2024 and so far it has exceeded our expectations and we both really love it now. The Malibu really is an under rated car and our local dealer can’t keep them on the lot either – they come in and sell off quickly.

  13. I am on my 4th Malibu and every one I have owned was at a great price and delivered quality the entire time. The Malibu’s are built in the USA with pride in Fairfax Kansas. I have said this over and over again “GM doesn’t think there is enough profit in the Malibu”. If GM continues to make the Malibu in the USA I will continue to buy new ones. If they assemble it in other countries like the Trailblazer, Equinox, Blazer, Trax etc I will never purchase another one. I have bought all GM vehicles built in the USA since 1979, and hope I can continue to find great cars like the Malibu.

  14. I think I heard this story before. Now it’s the Malibu. The Impala was winning awards best sedan for the money. Safety and handling J J Power. What did GM do but cancel it. I own a 2017 Impala with a V6. It’s the best car I have ever owned.

  15. I have a 2017 Malibu great car! At 34,000 miles I Wanted to order a 2022 Malibu, Factory was shut down for months so the “Chips” could be used in the $70,000″ 4 door “Cadillac Pick-up Trucks”! so I replaced the 4 Tires & I am still driving it!

    1. The Malibu would be a great car and a good value if it had a decent transmission. Better yet, bring back the Impala.

  17. General Motors did the same thing to the Impala and Cruze. They would have sold many when gasoline is $4 plus a gallon. They are making to many different Cadillac and Buick models

  18. Maybe it’s time to bring back the longer Buick version of the Malibu that was discontinued years ago. Sell it as Chevy or Buick or both?

  19. I love my Malibu. Excellent, excellent value for money. My warranty is done and I am longing to many more years with it. Brilliant daily driver and family car. Soft, quite, comfy… sorry, ran out of adjectives, but you got my point 🙂
I’d buy it again any day of the week, unless a longer Buick comes out 😉
