Chevy Camaro Clocked At 199 MPH On Florida Turnpike: Video

While performance cars can add spice to our commutes, showing restraint and abiding by traffic laws is absolutely vital to ensure the safety of yourself and everyone else around you on public roads. That being said, two young adults were recently apprehended after doing nearly 200 mph in a Chevy Camaro on the Florida turnpike in Orlando.

As covered by Fox 35 Orlando, two young adults were reported to Florida Highway Patrol for allegedly street racing sometime after 1 a.m. in the Lake Mary area. Shortly thereafter, the driver of the Camaro turned south on the Florida Turnpike and was subsequently clocked at a top speed of 199 mph in a 70 mph zone.

The driver of the Camaro, later identified as Luis Alejandro Lozano-Figueroa (20), was arrested on a charge of racing on a highway. Meanwhile, Mario Alberto Paz-Gil (19) was arrested for knowingly riding as a passenger during street racing. Both young adults were booked into the Osceola County jail.

It’s worth noting that the Camaro also had a 16 year-old passenger at the time of arrest, who was later returned to their mother.

An interesting point worth noting is that this 2016 Chevy Camaro was likely a heavily modified vehicle, as a bone-stock Camaro ZL1 can barely reach these speeds. In fact, the ZL1 trim level wasn’t even introduced to the sixth-generation Chevy Camaro’s lineup until the 2017 model year.

This should go without being said, but regardless, please never speed on public roads. Leave the racing antics for a closed road where innocent lives aren’t involved.

On a different not, the passenger being charged for riding in a vehicle that was involved in a street race? Really??? That seems a bit dumb. What’s he going to do? Jump out of the car at 199mph? 🤣 stupid charges they can come up with! They never stop amazing me.

    1. Hell yeah

Looks like most on this site are good boys.

No wonder there’s few here that really race a car.

These guys were just born 70 years late.

PS: most of the fish stories here are baloney. As anyone over 60 or 70 knows, the old cars were rpm and gearing limited. My car ran out of rpm before anywhere near this speed. Most of the old ones with three or four speeds were topped out at 120-125. 5500 rpm and 3:55 gears even didn’t go near that fast. Add in 4:10 and you were done at 105-110.

      1. Immediately before being clocked at 131 mph by radar in my CTS my dash displayed “This car is limited to 130 mph”. The officer ignored my pointing this out and I didn’t pursue it.

      2. I have a 69 that had a 350 Cid, 4:11, 15″ rims and I topped out at 8500 on I75 in FL. How fast do you think I was going? The speedometer is disconnected, Trans is 400 automatic 1:1 high gear. I really don’t know, but been told around 170.
Now for the rest of the story lol,,, I went through the traps at 105 @ 5500, but no et. The next week I went to the track and blew up the engine, piston broke just above the rist pin, but the rod luckily stayed inside the block, I lifted as soon as the car nosed. It now has a 427 Cid waiting to be put back in with 3:73 in the back. Not sure but I might put in a 700r4 and just drive it as a cruiser.

        1. Simple math. If the car went 105 MPH at 5500 RPM, then at 8500 RPM the speed should be 162 MPH.

          Reply
          1. Well, I suppose everyone’s guess was fairly close. I figured there would be a drop off as drag increases, the increase in speed would be less.

            Reply
            1. With your manual transmission, there should be virtually no slippage in the driveline. Therefore, if the engine indeed reached 8500 RPM in top gear, that would give you 162 MPH.

              Reply
              1. It’s was an automatic transmission. I just thought there would be an aerodynamic tradeoff as speed increases so does drag. But I’m not sure at what speed does the curve decline.

                Reply
                1. OK – Missed the part about the Turbo 400 trans. Could be 5-10% slippage at that speed. Top speed was probably around 145-155. 🙂

                  Reply
                  1. Well, either way the engine didn’t like it. It was vibrating so bad I couldn’t see out the windshield, was watching the median to make sure I was going straight. Only dumb enough to do it once, never again. Didn’t get caught, but I know better. There is more to the story, but I’ll spare you.

                    1. Fish story.

What components were used to get 8500 rpm in a small block that didn’t cost a fortune?

Not enough horsepower to push anything but a missle thru the air at that speed. Drag is a huge factor at any speed like that. Sorry, can’t happen.

                      Come on now.

                      Reply
                    2. I didn’t build the engine, it had a mild cam and different intake when I bought it. It was still pulling when I lifted but it was vibrating so bad I couldn’t see. It obviously didn’t have anything special since it blew up the next weekend at the drag strip. I bought a 427cid to replace the one I broke. I still have it, engine is on a stand.

                    3. Bucket boy, I don’t care if you believe me or not, I had two people in the car when I did it. Will not do it again. In fact, it was a satellite that made me mad enough at the two that was with me, he tried to keep me from passing. The two that were with me gave me a hard time, so I figured, if you want me to go fast, let’s go. I’m glad it didn’t blowup until at the track, it could have been very bad.

  28. I’m 75, at 17 my buddy and I “borrowed” his older brother’s Ford Galaxy 500 XL and headed North. The law got after us on interstate 75 North for speeding. I was driving and floored it, we outran them for nearly 30 miles. They said we topped 145 mph. The law set-up two Roadway tractor trailers nose to nose and waited. I saw them and slowed down enough to try going around the right side. I hit a police car on the other side and we jumped out running. We froze after hearing 4 or 5 gun shots. We were not hit. After a month in jail in Tn.,they let us join the Army. That’s how we became Vietnam Veterans and pretty upstanding citizens today! I own a Z06 now, but kinda follow the law.
