The Crosstrek also posted a 13 percent segment share, down a segment-worst four percentage points. The HR-V maintained a 10 percent share, while the Compass and Kona each held a seven percent share, both down one percentage point. The Corolla Cross posted a six percent share, down two percentage points, and the Trailblazer earned a five percent share, down three percentage points. The three other GM models in this space fared as follows:
- Encore GX maintained a four percent share
- Envista posted a two percent share
- (The discontinued) Encore’s share was nil, down a percentage point
The five GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer along with the Buick Envista, Encore, and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 84,456 deliveries. That was good for a 24 percent segment share, commanding nearly a quarter of all sales in this space and enough to solidly place The General in first place, while the Trax alone nearly took the top spot.

Out of the 11 manufacturers represented here, four field multiple models in this space of 23 entries, though three of those models have been discontinued and will eventually fall off this list. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:
- GM – 24 percent share, five models (the Buick Encore has been discontinued, joined now by its indirect replacement, the first-ever Buick Envista)
- Hyundai-Kia
- 18 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
- 15 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
- Subaru – 13 percent share, one model
- Stellantis – 11 percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued while the all-new Dodge Hornet joins the segment)
- Honda – 10 percent share, one model
- Toyota – six percent share, two models
- Mazda – five percent share, one model
- Nissan – five percent share, one model
- VW – five percent share, one model
- Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model
- Ford – zero percent share, one discontinued model
While fielding multiple entires in a segment seems to result in higher quantities of deliveries for a manufacturer, that doesn’t prevent those with a single model – like Subaru and Honda – from holding their own.
Regardless, GM commanded first place, solidly ahead of Hyundai-Kia this quarter.
Overall, the mainstream subcompact crossover segment grew a healthy 41 percent to 338,094 units during Q4 2023, meaning Trax sales significantly outperformed the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
The explosive sales performance of the Chevy Trax continued with an 836 percent leap, coming in within just 434 deliveries of the Subaru Crosstek. Ironically, the Crosstek is aimed at the Chevy Trailblazer, both of which offer all-wheel-drive, while the Trax does not.
Additionally, the all-new 2024 Trax continues to help GM distance itself from the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate in terms of cumulative sales volume in the highly contested and crowded mainstream subcompact crossover segment. Prior to the launch of Chevy’s new entry-level crossover, GM and Hyundai-Kia sales were neck-and-neck in this space.
About Chevrolet Trax
GM debuted the next-generation 2024 Chevy Trax well over a year ago as the Bow Tie’s new entry-level crossover.
On the outside, the 2024Â Chevy Trax incorporates the Bow Tie brand’s latest design language for internal combustion-powered models, taking after the Chevy Blazer crossover. The all-new Trax is longer, lower, and wider than the preceding model. Up front is a set of LED headlamps, configured within a dual-level cluster. Five trim levels are on offer – LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ; each include their own unique styling bits, from wheels to grille treatments.
Furthermore, the 2024 Chevy Trax offers a new Blackout Package and new roof rack cross rails.
Inside, the new 2024 Trax is roomier than the preceding model, and offers more safety features and tech, including a standard eight-inch diagonal infotainment screen on LS and 1RS trims, while higher-end LT, 2RS, and Activ trims get an 11-inch screen. Further onboard tech includes Active Noise Cancelation and cruise control, while Adaptive Cruise Control is offered on most trims.
Improvements to the 2024 Chevy Trax’s turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine help bring total output to 137 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 162 pound-feet of torque at 2,500 to 4,000 rpm. It is the same powerplant found in the Chevy Trailblazer in LS and LT trim levels. Additionally, the 2024 Trax boasts improved fuel economy over the previous-generation 2022 Chevy Trax.
Only front-wheel-drive is available while the outgoing Trax offered an all-wheel-drive option. Those who would like AWD will need to move up to the aforementioned Trailblazer.
Praise for the Bow Tie brand’s subcompact crossover continues to pour in.
The 2024 Chevy Trax was one of 10 GM models among North American Car of the Year candidates, competing with six of those in the 2024 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year category.
In addition, the all-new Chevy Trax won the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. ALG Residual Value Award.
Furthermore, the next-gen Chevy Trax was named among Car and Driver 10Best Trucks and SUVs for 2024.
Ordering for the 2025 Chevy Trax kicks off this month. Also, the 2025 Trax gets two new paint colors and gains an E85-compatible engine, making it a flex fuel-capable vehicle.

Comments
Are you not adding the Toenail into the stellantis list?
Given that the Tonale has a starting price of around $43K vs. the ~$20K starting price for Trax and company, I’d say it’s fairly obvious why it’s not part of this comparison.
This is a really good lesson. The previous generation Trax was terrible because it tried to do too many things at once and did none of them well. GM figured out they could improve the core experience while adding a bunch of features for the same price if they ripped out AWD. They did and now they have a winner on their hands.
The 1st gen was definitely not the greatest car, but it was functional, decent sized engine and catered to those who need basic transportation and could care less about looks designs and how it scores among auto media.
It almost outsold the Equinox. Discounts have vanished. And I can’t wait to see what, if any, price increase is coming for the ’25s that are identical (with no new features, unfortunately, but GM has no incentive to change anything).
I’m VERY curious to see how these hold up long-term.
I thought these GM 3 cylinder engines have been around in other parts of the world for a few years now with no major problems? I’m not being a jerk, but just asking….can you share the information that you have as to how they are not as reliable and the engines have worse build quality?
So, Dan, you don’t have any reliable source for your claim. If 5 to 10 years is needed to demonstrate durability and that time hasn’t passed yet, you’re just making an unproven assertion about the engine. Be honest. Yes, yes, I know the Toyota engine is reliable, and their strategy of using the same engine for years and years is a good one. But that doesn’t say anything about the GM three cylinders, does it?
Desert Native:
Haven’t heard any thing super serious about the 3 cylinder, except for a disgruntled You-tuber, whose air conditioning compressor died and dealer is refusing to get it replaced or buy it back.
But FORD has had all kinds of problems with their [in the oil] timing belt on their 1,000 cc (seems very similar to GM’s 1,200 cc engines) delaminating the belt at around 45,000 miles. About a $2,000 repair bill since obviously, not the easiest thing to change out. Oil is usually very hard service for Belting.
Powertrain warranty on the Trax of 5 year, 60,000 miles. So presumably the thing will hold together until then.
What I find jaw dropping is that even with an often used TURBO charger, (requiring ultraclean oil), the owner’s manual says the first oil change doesn’t need to take place until 7000-7500 miles.
If I bought a new TRAX, the oil and filter would be changed out at 1,000 for the first, 3,000 for the second, and every 5,000 miles after that. Going that distance (7,500 miles) prior to the first oil change just ensures that any gunk from the manufacturing process is going to score the cylinder liners and make the engine much less precision than it initially was.
The 7500 mile first change interval is not a problem with synthetic oil. Synthetic oil is required in all new GM engines I am aware of. Trax requires 0W-20 oil, you can only make a synthetic 0W oil, conventional oil will not go that low in viscosity. Anyone using anything but 100% synthetic oil in any engine does not fully understand how much better synthetic oil is than conventional oil.
Oh that just being pedantic. Even the latest Corvettes have a break in routine.
I’m with Bruce on this one, Bill, if only for the idea that GM warranties the engines for 5 years / 60,000 miles. I realize that GM is balancing potential warranty costs against oil change requirements (including synthetic oil), but why would they recommend 7,500 mile changes if it was as bad for the motor as you seem to think? I recall the days of changing the oil in a new car after 1000 miles in order to clear out all the manufacturing gunk. However, I believe that car factories are much cleaner these days – for worker safety (thank you, unions), environmental health and reduced warranty costs. I remember touring the GM factory in Van Nuys, California in the early 1960’s – it was a pretty dirty place. Photos of factories today look almost like clean rooms.
These arent the same 3 bangers you know
Most other countries a car is reliable if it makes it 60,000 miles. In America, that’s considered a lemon.
Dan you are an A
Doesn’t this concept apply to anything across any industry? It’s basics of business and economics. But even if they don’t change anything and the price stays the same, it will sell as it gives good value for $$$, but eventually the novelty wears off and they’ll have to make changes.
The Ford Escape, the popular Ford Bronco Sport, and the larger strong selling Nissan Rogue also have 3 cylinder engines, and I haven’t heard any criticisms of those models. We have to give 3 cylinder engines a chance. Plus, we must be thankful that GM is making an affordable vehicle for customers in the Trax, the Trailblazer, and the Envista.
Its the Ford Ecosport that had the smaller engine. The Escape has a 4 cylinder. Unless they have a base trip with a 3.
Cheap is many peoples price point in the era of Putinflation.
Only 17% of Americans can actually afford a new vehicle, so many peoples price point is in the Trax range.
ATTN big guy you can keep saying bidenomics 10,000Xs a day, every time you say it you lose votes.
Trax is cannibalizing Trailblazer sales during winter when AWD is most popular. Trailblazer was generally 3ed ranked and pricer.
Envista is a sales dud not really helping Buick despite rave reviews. Would have sold better as a Chevy Cruze Cross.
I only buy lightly used but would consider Envista. I’m okay with a geriatric brand even if not fitting the demo
I think Buick missed on the front end styling of the Envista and Encore GX. Hopefully they get quick face lifts. The 2020 to 2022 Escape shows how badly ugly front end styling can hurt sales.
I really hope Buick doesn’t screw up the front ends of the Envisions and Enclave.
In Europe/Aisa, most cars make 45-60K miles before giving up the ghost. They have no concept of what American roads are like. This engine benefits from older GM 4 cylinder know how (iron duke and original ecotech lines) but will be incredibly strained and will experience higher than normal bore/ring wear, and a lot of heat, which won’t do well to the oil and timing chain. Think a 100-150k mile motor.
On the bright side, this motor weights 216lbs, so it will be easy to swap
Surprised the Bolt Twins aren’t listed as mainstream GM comparisons for the Trax.
So the trax outsold the trailblazer by double even without AWD . Seems like they need scrap the trailblazer
… or take the Trailblazer in a more rugged direction (see Bronco Sport).
I agree. I think the next TB should be built alongside with a new Jimmy and enter Bronco/ Jeep territory. They could use the Colorado platform and make the Jimmy more of the 4-door and the TB more like a 2 door or 2 door and half doors like the last FJ Cruisers. Won’t happen but that make sense to me. They could keep the AWD version of the current TB, restyle it and call it the Trax Active II or something like that.
GM won’t go in that direction, at least not with ICE models.
What I was suggesting above is for the Trailblazer to go in the direction of the Bronco Sport, itself a rugged / off-road(ish) variant of the Ford Escape.
AWD, is a useless feature that was hyped up the wazoo. Sure, areas getting lots of snow, it makes sense. Otherwise, it’s extra systems that need maintenance and cost more to repair, but returning no benefits to most.
Tell me you never driven a good AWD system, without telling me you’ve never driven a good AWD system.
I have a car with awd and one without. No one claims that AWD isn’t good. The point is, not everyone needs it.
Comments have been more than generally positive for the new Trax….. I decided to purchase a new bare-bones BOLT EV, which ended up being around $4,000 cheaper in NY State than the already low priced TRAX. There have been negative comments about the TRAX but they are in the definite minority view.
It will be interesting to see which car mechanically holds up longer – as I say, if I had purchased a TRAX I would have done initially 3 oil and filter changes besides what they recommend in the owner’s manual.
Oil changes in general are a cheap expense. But if you got a plain Jane Bolt, then no big deal. I got the EUV in Nov 2022. Already racked up 27,000 miles on it. Definitely worth it. Excellent car if you drive a lot.
Had a 2017, but this 2023 Bolt EV has much more attractive styling, much more comfortable cloth seats, an 8% bigger battery, free fast charging $500 EVGO card, while being about $10,000 cheaper. Add in $9,500 fed and state point-of-sale rebate along with my 2019 premier volt trade-in, and it cost me only $3,450, including sales taxes and fees. Dealer threw in a Webasto 110/220 8/12/32 amp charger cord which I didn’t need, but he said to sell it on ebay if I dont want it.
So one of the best values I have ever bought – A brand new car for Pin Money.
Got a comment in the email questioning a break in period for the TRAX and other GM 3 cylinder products..
GM still has a computer shackled break in period for the most expensive CORVETTES until the engine has been properly broken in. I find it hard to believe that much more precision was used on the mass produced Korean engines than a car costing multiples as much.
With my new BOLT EV 1LT, I still don’t floor the accelerator, nor drive the tires faster than 50 mph until 100 or so miles are under its belt. I want the helical gears in the speed reduction gearbox and transaxle to gently wear into place for 100,000 miles.
Bruce and others might have a point, however the Synthetic Oil being used has little to do with oil change frequency as I am *NOT* worried about the oil itself breaking down prematurely – I am worried about the filter, and oil itself’s capacity to carry contamination.
Mass produced engines always generate a bit of gunk initially… My proof is, look at the issues FORD has had with its 3 cylinder engines – sometimes as early as 45,000 miles when the ‘in oil’ timing belt starts delaminating.. $2,000 repair job.
I find it hard to believe that FORD and GM have a several generational gap in design and manufacturing prowess, especially since complicated parts such as 9 or 10 speed transmissions were developed jointly.
At this size and price point, it is all the car many folks really need. And, it doesn’t look entry level in any trim.
Sales are up because it is the cheapest gm model, not because it’s worth it. It’s stilla foreign vehicle not USAmade. Made in South Korea. What happened to made in USA motto for Chevy and Gm? Sellouts
It’s a good value for $$$. Majority of buyers could care less about all the hype and opinions of YouTube influencers. They need a car that’s affordable and gets you from a to b. Styling is subjective, so no point debating that.
