Chevy Silverado sales during the fourth quarter of 2023 kept the Bow Tie brand’s line of full-size trucks in second place in its segment when ranked by sales volume, as it has for over a year now. As such, the Silverado actually narrowed the gap with the F-Series.

The GM Authority Take
Chevy Silverado sales during the last quarter of 2023 were nearly flat, matching the segment sales performance as a whole. But combining Silverado sales with strong sales of the GMC Sierra puts GM even further ahead of Ford this time around, by more than 57K units, especially since The Blue Oval was the only automaker in the red during Q4 2023. As such, the General continues as the best-seller of full-size pickup trucks in U.S.
Chevy’s truck lineup of refreshed models and off-road-focused offerings positions the Bow Tie brand quite well in terms of sales, which is great news since fulls-size trucks are the lifeblood of General Motors. These full-size trucks alone accounted for 23 percent, or nearly a third, of all GM sales in the U.S. during Q4 2023 and 35 percent, or over a third, of all Chevy sales in the U.S.
About Chevrolet Silverado
The 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 arrives as the fourth model year of the fourth-generation nameplate, introducing a few changes and updates over the refreshed 2022.5 Silverado. One such change is that 2023 Silverado Duramax models are equipped with the new 3.0L I6 LZ0 engine turbodiesel “baby Duramax,” replacing the 3.0L I6 LM2. The big news for the 2023 Silverado 1500 is the introduction of the even more off-road capable, first-ever 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison.
This past November, the 2023 Chevy Silverado rated poorly in updated IIHS crash tests, specifically back-seat safety.
For 2024, the Chevy Silverado 2.7L engine is called TurboMax. Also, the 2024 Silverado ZR2 offers the LZ0 Duramax diesel engine to provide more low-end torque while off-roading, joining the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine for available powerplants. Furthermore, the 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 now gets the second-generation Hydra-Matic 8L80 eight-speed automatic transmission in conjunction with that engine. Meanwhile, the 2024 Silverado High Country will be available with the Midnight Edition Package, and the 2024 Silverado ZR2 offers the LZ0 Duramax diesel engine, joining the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine for available powerplants. That 6.2 liter will sound meaner thanks to a new Active Exhaust system.
Also, the 2024 Silverado 1500 offers a new drop-in bedliner and new bed Utility Wall Package. Additionally, the 2024 Silverado ZR2 is available with new beadlock-capable wheels.
The Chevy Silverado 1500 now offers a ZR2 Spec Multimatic DSSV Shock System accessory for the 2019 model year or later Silverado 1500, with a design and tuning intended to provide the truck with improved off-road performance.
Last fall, GM unveiled the refreshed 2024 Chevy Silverado HD with new exterior styling, an overhauled interior, new tech including standard wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, safety features like Adaptive Cruise Control, and upgrades to the powertrain lineup. The updated Silverado HD also offers a new High Country Premium package which replaces the High Country Deluxe package offered previously. Also, the 2024 Silverado HD offers two new 22-inch wheel options with certain of those rollers now available on more trim levels.
Back in April, The General debuted the first-ever 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 as the flagship off-roader for the Bow Tie brand’s heavy-duty pickup line, while the new Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 Bison takes the big rig even further when it comes to off-road capability.
Under the hood, the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD cradles the 6.6L L8T V8 gasoline engine as standard, while the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine is optional. The diesel engine also boasts an improved, SAE-certified output of 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque, improvements to both metrics over the 2020 thru 2023 model years. For 2024, the gasoline engine now connect to GM’s ten-speed automatic transmission, replacing the GM six-speed for prior model years.
In November month, the Chevy Silverado HD won the Vincentric 2024 Lowest CPO Cost To Own In America Award in the Full Size 3/4-Ton and Full-Size 1-Ton Pickup categories, based on several factors. The Chevy Silverado 2500 HD has $1,623 lower ownership costs and the 3500 HD has $2,338 lower costs relative to the “nearest competitor,” outperforming three competing models according to the award.
Recently, the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 shined in MotorTrend’s off-road pickup comparison test as the “one beefy heavy-duty off-road truck standing alone at the top of the mountain.”
Looking ahead, the upcoming 2025 Chevy Silverado HD will add a Silverado HD Trail Boss trim level for the first time ever, per exclusive GM Authority reporting.

Comments
I love GM trucks but GM just keeps hurting themselves because of poor quality engines, transmissions, and various other things. I am ready to buy a new Silverado any day, but I’m not sure that the new one would be as good as the one I have now.
Maybe GM could have been first if not for its 5.3 problems, questionable transmissions and all of the unsold 4-cylinders. Plus they just couldn’t get them on the lots due to supply chain screwups.
GM has always outsold ford trucks! Add Chevy and GMC truck sales together and GM trucks are way ahead of ford track sales and have always been ahead…!!!
Going back 21 model years, the Silverado/Sierra and F-series tend to go back and forth as sales leads pretty evenly. Neither one clearly outsells the other on any sort of regular basis.
