The 2018 Chevy Silverado 2500HD pickup stands out from the pack for its reliability and versatility, according to the list of “most reliable used pickup trucks” recently published by Consumer Reports.
The CR report describes the 2018 Chevy Silverado 2500HD as one of a select group of pickup models that “were good when they were new” and since then have “stood the test of time,” chosen both because of their success in past CR road testing and revealed as still having “above average reliability” according to consumer surveys.
The Chevy Silverado 2500HD is described as a powerful, rugged working vehicle, but one that also notable has “enough creature comforts and modern amenities.” The study advises steering clear of the 2018 model year’s Z71 suspension package despite its popularity because of its “atrocious” ride, with other trims offering a far less uncomfortable experience.
Other pluses for the model are described as being its “cultured and brawny” diesel powerplant and its maximum towing capacity of 35,500 pounds. The four-wheel drive “auto” setting also comes in for praise since it makes it possible to set the 4WD and simply leave it on constantly while driving the truck. The transmission is effective, but long stopping distances are something of a negative.
Zooming in on particulars, the 2018 Chevy Silverado HD was rated at 67/100 for reliability and 3/5 for owner satisfaction. The reliability rating was outdone by only a single pickup in the study, the Toyota Tundra with 72/100, while well-known competitors fared far worse, with the Ram 1500 registering a reliability of 34/100 and the Ford F-250 coming in at 33/100.
Driving experience received top marks with 80/100, with a quiet and spacious cabin, the aforementioned smoothly performing transmission, and ample power accounting for the score. Comfort came in at 69/100 while value lagged at 40/100, perhaps in part because of the truck’s unimpressive fuel economy, with the average owner reporting typical economy of 16 miles per gallon.
The 2018 Chevy Silverado also rates well for frontal crash safety according to the NHTSA.

I agreed with everything CR wrote until they said the Tundra was rated better. That’s a joke.
16 mpg with the diesel or gas or averaged together? Come on guys, this is important as 16 mpg with a diesel would be worse than my 95 GMC diesel.
Wow! CR actually gave a GM product a favorable review. I must still be dreaming.
auto 4wd? huh? isnt that only on the 1500’s ?
No, It is on all.
really,my 2015 HD has the normal low/high 4WD knob on the dash and my buddies 2019 (last year ) also has the same knob. i would like to see an HD of that era with the Auto 4WD
I’m not sure what “auto” 4WD is. That implies that it comes on by itself. At least since ’95, you could shift to 4WD and it would stay on as long as you wanted. In my ’20 HD, the shift is a button you push to the left of the steering wheel on the dash.
yeah, for example a 2015 1500 would have the auto 4wd selection which comes on when needed, then it has 2 wd and a all the time 4wd selection. the article here states the HD has the auto 4wd which is a mistake in their description. the Hd has 2 wd 4wd high and low. yes like the older models the 4wd selection you can stay in all the time. trying to clear it up.
Commenters on here are always saying how CR is biased and unreliable, so I guess this truck is actually a piece of junk.
Good grief! The Tundra!! Thats comparing apples to turnips. My 2017 z71 averages 21 mpg but put a trailer behind it and it goes down drastically. The HD does not have the auto 4wd feature.
