Zane Smith Joins NASCAR Chevy Cup Series Team For 2024

2022 Truck Series champion Zane Smith has penned a multiyear deal with NASCAR Chevy team, Spire Motorsports, to compete in the Cup Series in 2024 and beyond. The decision is part of Spire’s new alliance with Trackhouse Racing, with plans to put Smith in a Trackhouse race car in 2025.

So far, Smith has seven Cup Series starts under his belt, all behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang race car. In his first start, when subbed for Chris Buescher in the No. 17 Mustang at Gateway in June 2022, he finished 17th, and posted a 10th-place result at Charlotte this year, driving for Front Row Motorsports.

“This is an incredible moment for me,” Smith said. “Trackhouse is one of the most progressive organizations in the garage. I told some friends a year ago that I wanted to be a part of what Trackhouse is doing and I just can’t believe this is all coming true. I am very excited and thankful to have a future with the organization.”

He added, “The Cup Series is the pinnacle of racing in America, and I cannot wait to compete, learn and hone my skills against the best in the world. I am really looking forward to working with the Spire Motorsports team in 2024 and believe the alliance with Trackhouse will help continue Spire’s ascent up the grid.”

Smith will drive the No. 71 NASCAR Chevy Camaro, but his sponsors have yet to be revealed. He will race alongside Spire teammate, Carson Hocevar, who will drive the No. 77 NASCAR Chevy Camaro in 2024, as well as Trackhouse allies Ross Chastain, Daniel Suárez and Shane van Gisbergen.

Smith’s jump to a NASCAR Chevy team comes as a bit of a shock, considering the success he earned with Ford Performance’s Truck Series efforts in 2022 and 2023. He was the 2022 division champion with four victories, and finished seventh in the 2023 championship with two wins. However, the 2024 Cup Series season will not be his first with The Bow Tie, as he previously drove a Silverado RST truck for GMS Racing in 2020 and 2021. He also drove a Camaro for Kaulig Racing for a one-off Xfinity Series race in 2021.

  1. Nice to see a local HB guy make it big. Probably doesn’t hurt that his dad is head of the Terrible Herbst off-road team and runs Herbst-Smith fabrication here in Huntington Beach. They build some nice trophy trucks and spec trophy trucks.
