UAW Claims GM Violated New Labor Contract Due To Missing Retiree Checks

After a series of strikes that lasted for several weeks, the UAW union and General Motors ratified a new labor contract back in November 2023 that will last up until the 2028 calendar year. Now, the union is claiming that The General has already violated the contract due to missing retiree checks.

The UAW is alleging that General Motors breached the terms of the new labor contract by failing to send $500 lump sum payments to some retirees. For reference, the labor contract stipulates that the Detroit-based automaker send annual $500 lump sum checks to all retirees. While the first round of checks was issued on December 15th, 2023, an administrative error caused some retirees to not get their money.

The UAW is also claiming that General Motors improperly excluded former Delphi workers from the annual checks, pointing out that the same group of retirees received a similar payment back in 2015.

The union is threatening legal action over these payments to Delphi retirees.

“If we are unable to resolve the issue during these discussions, we will pursue all available contractual and legal remedies on behalf of the impact Retirees and Surviving Spouses,” UAW Vice President Mike Booth claimed in a prepared statement.

As a reminder, General Motors and the UAW union reached a tentative agreement back in October 2023, and ratified said contract the following month. Over the course of the strikes, it’s estimated that the Detroit-based automaker lost $1.1 billion, and had a loss of production amounting to roughly 95,000 units, with the vehicles like the Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Chevy Traverse, and Buick Enclave bearing the brunt of the impact.

Due to this, The General issued revised earnings guidance for 2023, along with a $10 billion accelerated share repurchase program intended to increase the company’s common stock dividend by 33 percent.

Surprising that the union didn’t pony up the missing $500.00 and take care of that retiree that is barely squeaking by on SS! lol

  5. What a shame. GM leadersheep sits atop the ren cen out of touch with reality. I guess the obscene millions in Mary’s pay will cause that.

Using the new agreement as a excuse for increased prices is just more GM spin to make labor look bad.

  25. GM always smoked the UAW and Delphi’s IUE. A lot of years we never got the Profit Sharing Bonuses we were promise however just before we were to get them, GM gave the BIG BOYS a large Bonus and never gave us anything. The Unions did nothing then so don’t expect anything now. I retired in 1997 with 30 years and have yet to see a penny raise in my Pension. Dream on!

  28. Blame the union for letting this slip by. Of all people, the union should know that GM has always cared about their profits and not the employees. Are the unions that dumb or are they looking out for them to protect their job ? I lost $800 of my pension each month, how much did you lose ?

  31. I am a Delphi retiree of 30 years. No $500 check came my way. Read the contract language where it says All retirees will receive $2500 over the contract length ($500 a year),No exceptions. UAW Vice President Mike Booth said it would take legal action if GM didn’t fulfill it’s agreement. It hasn’t happen and nothing is being done. We were smoked. Thousands of retirees like me have not received a penny on our pension since we retired. OH, when GM went Bankrupt, The PVGC took over GM pensions and it took close to $800 a month away from what I worked hard for. This is not a comment but a Reality. How would that make you feel if it were you?
