Shane van Gisbergen stated earlier this week that he intended to pack his schedule full of stock car racing next year, competing in at least 30 events next season. Those plans have now been solidified, as van Gisbergen announced he will drive a NASCAR Chevy Camaro in the Xfinity Series full-time in 2024 – as well as in seven Cup Series races.
Kaulig Racing will field the No. 97 Camaro for van Gisbergen in the 2024 Xfinity Series, meaning he will be able to accumulate points toward the championship in the division. The No. 97 itself pays homage to the car number on the doors of van Gisbergen’s Australian Supercars ride, which he raced to three championships. WeatherTech will sponsor the No. 97 Camaro for 17 races, while secondary sponsors have yet to be unveiled.
Meanwhile, van Gisbergen will also compete at the Cup Series level in seven events for Trackhouse Racing, with plans to race at Circuit of the Americas, the Charlotte 600, the Chicago Street Race, Watkins Glen, both Talladega races, and at Las Vegas in the fall. WeatherTech will sponsor his NASCAR Chevy race car for four of these races, while the rest of the sponsorship lineup will be revealed at a later date.
Thus far, van Gisbergen has raced in the Cup Series twice, winning in his first time behind the wheel of a NASCAR stock car on the Chicago streets. He later raced at the Indy Road Course, where he finished 10th. He also has one start in the Truck Series at Indy, which is his only experience on a paved oval track rather than a road course-style race.
Van Gisbergen also stated that he would like to race in the Truck Series, but has not announced any plans to do so at this time.
