Only one model year away from the introduction of a next-generation model, the 2024 GMC Terrain represents the seventh model year of Big Red’s second-generation compact crossover. Today, we’re taking a closer look at 2024 GMC Terrain towing capacities in the following GM Authority breakdown.
Before diving right in, here’s a brief overview of the Terrain’s powertrain offerings. Introduced for the 2023 model year, the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine produces 175 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 203 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. For reference, this engine replaced the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX gasoline engine, which was rated at a similar 170 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 203 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm, following the 2022 model year.
In regard to shifting duties, the GM nine-speed automatic transmission directs output to the wheels.
With all that in order, here’s a breakdown of 2024 GMC Terrain towing capacities:
2024 GMC Terrain Towing Capacities
Model | Drivetrain | Turbo 1.5L I4 LSD | |
---|---|---|---|
Axle Ratio | Max Trailer Weight (lbs / kg) | ||
SLE | FWD | 3.47 | 1,500 / 680 |
SLE | AWD | 3.47 | 1,500 / 680 |
SLT | FWD | 3.47 | 1,500 / 680 |
SLT | AWD | 3.47 | 1,500 / 680 |
AT4 | AWD | 3.47 | 1,500 / 680 |
Denali | AWD | 3.47 | 1,500 / 680 |
Looking over the numbers, we find that tow ratings are exactly the same as the 2023 GMC Terrain. That being said, the maximum a 2024 Terrain can pull is 1,500 pounds, or 680 kilograms. Notably, this figure is standard across the lineup, meaning every vehicle regardless of trim level, FWD configuration or AWD configuration feature the same towing capacity. In addition, all models offer the same 3.47 axle ratio.
It’s worth noting that unlike other GM crossovers, trucks and SUVs, there is no trailering package available for the Terrain. However, trailering provisions are equipped as standard fare.
As a reminder, production of the 2024 Terrain kicked off in May 2023 at the GM San Luis Potosà plant in Mexico. Notably, production is currently scheduled to conclude in October 2024 in order to make room for the third-generation 2025 model.
Under the skin lies the GM D2 platform, which Big Red’s compact crossover shares with the Chevy Equinox.

GM should offer the 2.0L turbo again, which would increase the towing capacity.
Wonder how the GM Marketing people sleep at night when they talk about the Terrain’s “towing capacity” and “off-road capabilities” with a ‘staight face’ … no ‘wink and a smile’.
Wonder how the GM Marketing people sleep at night when they talk about the Terrain’s “towing capacity” and “off-road capabilities” with a straight face … no ‘wink and a smile’.
Why do people buy a small car to haul a trailer? A truck makes more sense and probably costs less
That’s really, really sad. GMC is just a shameless cash cow for GM. With the profit they generate, you’d think they’d put the effort into a better product for your money, a real upgrade over rental special Chevys.
Useless
What exactly are trailering provisions?
Yes, I would like to know what this means. Is there wiring? Receiver?
Proof that the 2.0T desperately needs to be offered again!
