GM Truck Sales Up 25 Percent During Q3 2023

GM truck sales increased in the United States, Canada, and Mexico during the third quarter of 2023.

GM pickup truck sales include the following models:

Shown here is the 2023 Chevy Colorado in the rugged off-road ZR2 trim.

It’s worth noting that not all of the above models are available across all three North American markets. The all-new 2023 Chevy S10 Max midsize pickup and the all-new 2024 Chevy Montana compact pickup are only available in Mexico. Additionally, GM has begun selling the next-generation 2023 GMC Canyon in Mexico for the first time ever.

The Silverado, meanwhile is sold in Mexico under the Silverado name for the Work Truck (WT) and Custom trim levels, and under the Cheyenne name for the LT trim level and above, including RST, ZR2, and High Country. In the U.S., the Silverado family includes light duty (half ton), heavy duty (three-quarter ton and one-ton), as well as medium duty (4500 HD, 5500HD and 6500 HD) vehicles, while the Sierra family is comprised of light duty and heavy duty models.

  1. Dismal performance for the Canyon, which is a brand new design and should be enjoying a bump, if only for the “new and different” factor. MSRP are out of control though, maybe “sticker shock” is a thing here.

    1. Wonder if supply on the little trucks is constrained. I live in a suburban area of a metroplex where you see everything on the roads. Earlier this year saw a handful of GMCs and nary a Chevy. That is still the case even now. The GM dealer down street is huge; they have a zillion Silverado and Sierra but not a little truck in site

    2. For a while only the base engine was shipping because EPA was holding things up, I don’t think that engine is even offered in the canyon which means canyon was not shipping. Context goes a long way my friend

  2. Yeah, the Canyon is bloated and expensive. It’s not really a much less expensive alternative for the Silverado anymore.

  3. Chevy buyers are going for cheaper prices, not quality!!

    1. You think there is a build quality difference between the two? You think the canyon engine and transmission are magically built better, tougher, more reliable?

Generally the GMCs will be more equipped standard ergo higher price. There might be some select premium content, like quilted leather, but the bones are no different between the two.

  4. Most importantly, how does that compare to Ford?

  5. Baffled at the $6k difference in price between the 2023/4 GMC Canyon AT4X and the 2023/4 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 with essentially the same options. The ZR2 doesn’t give anything up in terms of styling or interior quality, as far as I can tell.

I’d expect some sort of leather interior options in multiple colorways, and some unique tech like Super Cruise to justify the GMC premium. Feels like they just phoned this one in.

Think GMC is going to need to discount the Canyon significantly to attract buyers away from Chevy.

  6. Regardless of the price difference, I don’t see how it seems hard to understand that the Chevy’s outsell GMC’s with more models and fleet sales. But I definitely agree with most, that it is hard to justify the Colorado or Canyon with the pricing being as is. I own a full-size Sierra now, after some idiot ran a stop in town, running over 70 mph and destroying my 19 Canyon. My has far more room, comfort, great drivability and gets around 30 mpg or more with the 3.0 Duramax. Glad as hell I moved up, even if it cost me a few grand more!

    1. Experienced something similar in 2015 when I was considering the newly released Colorado/Canyon twins. Ended up in a full size Ram 1500 after comparing mid-size truck prices (including the Taco) with heavily discounted end-of-year full-size truck prices. In the end, I only paid $4-5k more for my full-size truck than a fully optioned Colorado/Canyon would have cost. The full-size trucks (test drove the Ram, Silverado, and F-150) all had much nice interiors too (lots of hard plastics in the GM mid-size twins) and I figured the resale on a full-size would be better if nothing else.

EPA estimated mileage for the mid-size trucks was surprisingly only a few MPG better than the full-size models – and that, plus the 20% off MSRP discount, was the thing that decided it for me in the end.

Discounts on full-size trucks are a thing again with dealer lots full of unsold inventory. Discounts may not be as deep as in 2015, but there are deals to be had.

FWIW, and because this is a GM site, once I settled on a full-size truck I preferred the Silverado and Sierra 4×4 with a crew cab and the 6.2L. But then the local Ram dealer ran a promo that included three triple black Sport models (all 4×4, crew cab, 5.7 hemi) and that was that.
