GM To Reimburse Chevy Tahoe, Suburban Buyers For Missing Illuminated Liftgate Sill Plate

General Motors has issued a Customer Satisfaction Program for owners of certain 2023 Chevy Tahoe and 2023 Chevy Suburban units after accidentally charging buyers for an option that was never equipped.

Certain 2023 Tahoe and Suburban owners were wrongfully charged for the LPO or dealer-installed illuminated liftgate sill plate (RPO code 5RU) option. Normally, this feature was included and only available with the LPO, Illumination Package (RPO code RGL), which cost an extra $1,195 and was optional on all trim levels except base LS.

This package included the following (relevant RPO code in parenthesis):

  • Illuminated mirror Chevrolet emblem, LPO (S3I)
  • Illuminated front door sill plates, LPO (S0M)
  • Illuminated liftgate sill plate, LPO (5RU)
Illuminated liftgate sill plate (RPO code 5RU).

As for the reason behind this Customer Satisfaction Program, the Illumination Package became unavailable to order as of late February 2023 production until the end of the 2023 model year. Prior to that, buyers who ordered the RGL feature may have gotten the illuminated emblem and door sill plates, but not the illuminated liftgate sill plate. As such, General Motors will reimburse $495 for customers in the United States.

Notably, reimbursement for Canadian customers should amount to $595. Additionally, this program will be in effect until January 2026.

As a reminder, both the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban are offered with three engine choices. The first option is the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84, rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, followed by the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax engine, which develops 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, rounds out the choices.

Under the skin, the Tahoe and Suburban ride on the GM T1 platform, which they share with General Motors’ other full-size SUVs. Production for the 2024 model year officially kicked off in November 2023 at the GM Arlington plant in Texas.
