GM Re-Releases Chevy Bolt EV Recall For Seat Belt Pretensioner Fire Risk

GM has issued another product recall for certain examples of the Chevy Bolt EV for an issue related to the all-electric vehicle’s seat belt pretensioner. In rare cases, this defect could result in a fire. Notably, GM issued a similar recall for the same issue late last year, but now, the automaker is recalling vehicles again as the GM dealerships that serviced these vehicles may not have correctly performed the remedy procedure.

The problem: affected units may exhibit a condition wherein exhaust gases emitted by a front seat belt pretensioner may come into contact with carpet fibers following a crash. A recall was released last year to address this issue, but the GM dealership that serviced the vehicles affected by the new recall may not have performed the recall remedy.

The hazards: in some cases, exhaust gases from the seat belt pretensioner may come into contact with carpet fibers, potentially resulting in a fire. The fire may develop around the B-pillar, and could increase the risk of injury.

The fix: dealers will inspect the left and right front seatbelt pretensioners and, if needed, install metal foil around the pretensioner exhaust and pretensioner covers.

Affected components: front seat belt pretensioners, which are designed to secure a passenger in the proper seating position shortly before a crash.

Affected vehicles: vehicles affected by this recall include Chevy Bolt EV units produced between the 2017 and 2023 model years. Units sold in the U.S. and Canada may have been affected.

Number of affected units: according to GM, 6,746 units of the Chevy Bolt EV are affected by this recall.

Owners should: GM will notify owners of affected vehicles and instruct them to make an appointment with their local dealer.
