Adding sales of the Canyon to those of the Colorado closes the gap between the two GM midsize trucks and the Taco even further, by around 7K units.
Looking Ahead
Now entering their second model year, the two all-new midsize pickup trucks from Chevy and GMC debuted to take on the long-standing segment sales champ, Toyota. It looks like the results have already shown positive gains.
Better yet, exciting changes and additions arrive for the 2024 model year to follow the 2023 debut models, which should boost sales even more. Further sales momentum, however, will depend primarily on supply and availability, as permitted by production and shipping volume.
About Chevrolet Colorado
The all-new, third-generation 2023 Chevy Colorado features a new exterior, a new powertrain, plenty of on-board technology, and a completely revised interior. The new model also rides on an updated platform, resulting in a more refined truck that is also more capable off-road. Under the hood resides one of two powertrains – the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L2R gasoline engine as well as the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B engine in Turbo Plus and Turbo High Output configurations. The new powerplants are mated to a new-generation eight-speed automatic transmission, which is vastly improved compared to the preceding GM eight-speed automatic, though a few issues still remain.
The 2023 Chevy Colorado is among NACTOY Truck of the Year finalists, having survived multiple rounds of selection in the 30th annual North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards to be one of the three category finalists competing for the Truck of the Year award.
GM recently debuted the all-new 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, the highly capable off-road midsize pickup truck developed in partnership with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). For 2024, the Bison will be offered as a standalone trim level rather than as a package. In addition to a wealth of standard components from AEV, the 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison also incorporates development input from off-road racing champion Chad Hall, and was refined on the Rubicon Trail to boot, adding new features like front and rear jounce control dampers.
With the Colorado ZR2 Bison on the way, the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Desert Boss Special Edition package will not return for the 2024 model year, as it’s being indirectly replaced by the Bison. Furthermore, the 2024 Chevy Colorado range drops the 8-inch driver information center, replaced by the 11-inch DIC across the lineup.
The 2024 Chevy Colorado also drops the mid-level Turbo Plus engine and gets TurboMax branding. That means the 2024 Colorado will offer just the base L2R engine on WT and LT trim levels, and High Output L3B engine on all other trims while optional on those trims. On a related note, here are the towing capacities of the 2024 Colorado.
For 2024, five trim levels continue to offered, including Work Truck (WT), LT, Trail Boss, Z71 and ZR2.
Check out all the changes, updates, and new features of the 2024 Chevy Colorado.
About GMC Canyon
Last year, GM unveiled the all-new 2023 GMC Canyon as the fresh, third generation of the midsize pickup, featuring revised exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, a new powertrain, and a range of tech goodies. It also introduced the first-ever 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X, available with an exclusive Edition 1 package.
In total, four trim levels available, including Elevation, AT4, AT4X, and Denali.
The 2023 GMC Canyon was among NACTOY’s “Best of 2024” as one of five semifinalist trucks in the Truck of the Year category, joined by the Chevy Colorado and Chevy Silverado EV, with the latter two advancing as finalists.
The first-ever 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition debuted over the summer, offering up a next-level off-roader complete with tons of trail-ready upgrades over the standard 2023 Canyon AT4X, framed as “the most advanced and capable Canyon ever.” Furthermore, the 2024 Canyon AT4X and AT4X AEV Edition will both get a new launch control feature as part of their Baja Mode, improving performance both on-road and off-road.
Additionally, the 2024 Canyon gets GM’s TurboMax engine branding as the name, going forward, of the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine in the High-Output tune. That is the sole powertrain offered on all 2023 and 2024 Canyon trims.
Recently, the 2024 Colorado received a revised production start date, pushed back from October 30th to mid-December due to the UAW strike at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri that began in September and ended in November with a ratified labor contract with GM after reaching a tentative contract agreement at the end of October. This will presumably impact Canyon production as well.

Because, you can’t get one. Ordered – AGAIN- on Friday after it was discovered that GM canceled orders on the remaining 23’s that couldn’t get built. Heads up, if you thought you had a 23 on order, you better walk into your dealer and get a status update on that.
Can anyone answer for sure when 2024 Canyon production is starting?? My dealership called me on on 10 Dec and said come in to place my order that production HAD begun. Is this true or just another lie by GMC or the dealership??
Lovely! My best friend and I are and have been loyal GM customers. He ordered a new Canyon in early July but to date no status report. If this is how GM does business, then it’s best the loyal GM customers look in another direction for the next vehicle purchase.
Mary has been focused on EV’s.
If you have something ordered? Don’t count on big bucks for your trade. Those days are over!!! The market is quickly correcting. No one is buying the $50,000 plus used vehicles and it’s all rolling downhill. $20,000 in negative equity is becoming commonplace. All of the gains made over the last three years are in the process of being erased. Nothing lasts forever.
Increased prices and outrageous interest rates might have a bit to do with it.
It doesn’t help much when you’re not shipping any to the dealerships and then letting the dealers jack up the prices $7000 over MSRP. Manipulating supply and demand during a time of high inflation.
No one was forced to buy anything. I postponed my own purchases.
Did anyone forget there was a strike. yes its still taking time to get them to the dealers. Also all of you have ordered did you not think the dealers had orders before you did? Sales are up which means they are selling them as fast at the dealer gets them. i want one too but willing to wait until I’ sure I can order one or get one at a little better price. deals are coming once toyota and ford are at full capacity. Medium truck market is hot right now and shows no signs of slowing down so all sides will be given deals in the new year. GM needs a factory just for the twins but seems they can’t even build the vans fast enough either.
They weren’t delivering them even before the strike. Personally, I think the manufacturers are all working together, taking advantage of the “supply chain issues” to artificially keep low supply.
I would love a column shifter . Flare side on the cargo box. V6 4.3L. Nobs for the light . Regular dash gages. Maybe a digital small screen for info. A simple truck 4×4 10in clearance. I love this style just to high tech . Take offense if you want but I’m not buying one. Until I see one like or with these options.
Maybe I’ll stick with my 2012 z71 3.7L i5. I only got 97700 miles. And blue with no over price or extra fees.
