GM Korea has just exported its 10,000,000 vehicle, representing a significant new milestone for the American company’s operations in the Asian country.
The automaker’s South Korean subsidiary announced having exceeded 10,000,000 vehicles exported worldwide from its local plants, a historic mark that strengthens and reaffirms once again the strategic role of GM Korea’s engineering and manufacturing operations in the company’s global business. On December 7th, the company celebrated this milestone with a special ceremony at the GM Bupyeong plant.
“Achieving exports of 10 million units is a testament to the dedication of our entire team in Korea, which is committed to ensuring our customers consistently receive the highest-quality products,” said President and CEO of GM Korea, Hector Villarreal. “In fact, GM accounted for nearly 20 percent of the nation’s total automobile exports in last October. These numbers once again highlight the critical role that Korea is playing as a part of GM’s global growth strategy,” he added.
Specifically, GM Korea said it has so far exported a total of 10,082,281 units of fully assembled vehicles since establishing operations in the country in October 2002. The company claims that by including exports of local products in the form of complete knock-down (CKD) units to be assembled in foreign plants, the figure would rise to 25,000,000 units.
Over the past 21 years, GM Korea has manufactured a wide range of vehicles that responded to changing customer demands both in the Asian country and in international markets. Its lineup has included primarily Chevrolet-branded models such as the Chevy Aveo, Spark, Trax, Cruze and Malibu, along with the current Trailblazer and 2024 Trax. Vehicles from Daewoo and Opel were also manufactured, as well as small crossovers from Buick.
Vehicles manufactured by GM Korea have been exported around the world, primarily to North America (35 percent) and Western Europe (26 percent), with the United States being the largest export market with more than 2.5 million vehicles sold. The Chevy Aveo has been the most exported model, with around 2.21 million units shipped. The Chevy Spark and Trax follow closely with exports of about 1.94 and 1.78 million units, respectively.

From the look at things one would think that export number would be 80% to the American market. Glad it’s only 30% America is actually a pretty cheap place to make cars. We would be exporting worldwide in droves if other countries weren’t @@@holes and kicked us out.
Steve, I think you might forget the GM Daewoo Era…
You will never be “a pretty cheap place to make cars” until you destroy the UAW. It isn’t just about the wages paid, but also the bureaucratic nature of employing union-members, a process that slows you down in every direction you may want to take your company.
10 MILLION MORE NAILS IN OUR COFFIN-SMFH
and $7B bailout in 2018 by the Korean taxpayers..
Johnsnow look around you: All Sparks came from Korea, many of the Trax previous generations as well. 100% of the Buick Encores were Korean. Today all Encore GX, Chevy TrailBlazers, Chevy Trax NG and Buick Envista come from Korea. All Aveos you see in the land of the free were made in Korea, too.
And I am not in a Hyundai / Kia Authority blog but there are many more model makes that come from Korea.
As Belo says: cannot ignore the facts.
There’s that stupid woke GM logo now Again

You should build automobiles where you sell them. But GM is turning into the largest import division of the domestic brand automakers, and how much money has the US and Canadian government gave them to keep plants open in N.A. And then we have Mexico which exports the majority of their vehicles all over the world. If I wanted a Korean made vehicle I would buy a Hyundia/Kia over buying a Daewoo(GM). Funny how well they sold here? But put a Chevy or Buick emblem on them and the all of a sudden become OK?
