GM Issues Fix For 2024 GMC Sierra HD Emissions Testing Glitch

Certain 2024 GMC Sierra HD trucks are included in a service update GM recently published, which details a remedy for a glitch in the Engine Control Module (ECM) causing emissions testing stations to get only partial data from the pickup during testing.

The glitch should be checked for and if necessary fixed when a 2024 GMC Sierra HD is brought to a dealership for repairs or other service, and also in vehicles currently in inventory or stocked on the dealer lot.

Failure to deliver the full range of needed data to emissions Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing stations is the main problem this software glitch could cause. However, the brake system control module might also fail to illuminate the Check Engine light even if it detects a fault, though problems with the stability control, brake system, and/or traction control will still cause the instrument panel warning to light up as normal.

In some instances, over-the-air (OTA) updates to the 2024 GMC Sierra HD may apply the necessary reprogramming and fix the issue without the need for human intervention. For this reason, dealers should use the GM Global Warranty Management system to verify if the fix is needed. The pickup will be shown as having an “Open” problem on its Investigate Vehicle History screen if the repair is still needed.

Repairing the fault requires about one hour of reprogramming, applied to both the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the Transmission Control Module (TCM) of the affected GMC Sierra HD. It does not need any physical parts or components to be carried out successfully.

Selling an affected truck, delivering it to a customer, using it in a demonstration, or trading it to another dealership are all forbidden until the GMC Sierra HD has been cleared or successfully reprogrammed to apply the fix.

    1. Luckily for the rest of us, not living in your state, VW was caught red handed while trying to cheat the emission test.

  2. Are they going to “weld up” the crack in the roof before or after the computer reprogram?
Time to quit using recycled soup cans for body sheet metal.
Glad all my old Chevy trucks are pre computer controlled.
