GM Issues Fix For 2024 Chevy Silverado HD Emissions Testing Glitch

GM has issued a service update containing a fix for 2024 Chevy Silverado HD trucks affected by an Engine Control Module glitch that could cause the vehicle to provide incomplete information to emissions testing stations.

Dealers are instructed to check all 2024 Chevy Silverado HD units both in inventory and brought in for servicing by customers for the glitch and apply the available remedy if necessary.

The glitch can cause several potential problems with the pickup truck. The most significant is that the affected truck will not provide all the needed information to emissions Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing stations. However, other issues could include the ECM failing to switch on the Check Engine light if a fault is detected by the brake system control module. Traction control, brake system and stability control problems will continue to make the light illuminate properly.

The fix is unusual in that it may be applied automatically when the affected 2024 Chevy Silverado HD pickup receives an over-the-air (OTA) update. Therefore, dealers should check the truck’s Investigate Vehicle History screen to see if it is marked “Open” in the GM Global Warranty Management system. If the issue is Closed, it has already been resolved over the air.

The repair itself requires no components and is carried out by reprogramming both the Silverado’s Engine Control Module (ECM) and the Transmission Control Module (TCM). The entire process, including verifying the correct software and calibration is present, requires about an hour to complete.

Notably, dealerships are instructed to keep potentially affected Chevy Silverado HD units in inventory until they have either been cleared as “Closed” through the GM Global Warranty Management system, or the fix has been successfully applied. It is a violation of federal law to sell or deliver the truck, trade it to another dealership, or use it in a demonstration until the fix is completed and verified.

  1. Fortunately there’s no emissions testing in my free red state.

  2. Need more information. Emissions systems between the gas vs. diesel are very different. Does this somehow impact ALL heavy duty trucks, or, just one of the powertrains (with the diesel being the more likely culprit)?

  3. My question is…..What about GMC’s HD’s?

  4. Looks like GM has let the Silverado go down hill . Instead focusing on electric. You can’t go all electric in one day. The Biden administration is mostly to blame. Working folks need a pickup they can count on not a computer that constantly needs an update
