GM EV Sales Grow 32 Percent To Over 20K Units During Q3 2023

GM electric vehicles (EV) sales increased 32 percent to 20,057 units in the United States during the third quarter of 2023.

GM EV sales are comprised of the following seven models:

The automaker also launched a new business called BrightDrop, that builds the BrightDrop Zevo 400 and Zevo 600 commercial delivery vans. However, sales of these models are not included in this analysis.

Shown here are the Chevy Bolt EUV and Bolt EV all-electric subcompact crossovers.

Three of those seven models – Blazer EV, Silverado EV, and GMC Hummer EV SUV – recorded their first sales during the third quarter of 2023.

Chevy Blazer EV sales kicked off during the third quarter of 2023, posting 19 deliveries. Chevy Silverado EV sales also kicked off this quarter, posting 18 deliveries of the Work Truck (WT), the only trim level launched so far. Additionally, sales of the GMC Hummer EV family continued to grow to 1,167 total units, with the Hummer EV Pickup posting 874 deliveries and Hummer EV SUV moving 293 units as the SUV joins the Pickup for the first time this quarter. The Pickup went on sale last December.

As for GM’s existing electric models, Chevy Bolt family sales grew eight percent to 15,835 units, continuing their year-long upward trajectory. Individually, the Bolt EV posted a drop of 21 percent to 8,793 units while the Bolt EUV posted a 99 percent jump to 7,042 units.

Finally, Cadillac Lyriq sales posted a healthy 3,018 deliveries. The model began arriving at dealers this past July.

Overall, GM EV sales grew 146 percent to 56,081 deliveries during the first three quarters of 2023.

Industrywide, the U.S. saw record EV sales during Q3 2023, topping 300K units to represent 7.9 percent of all vehicle purchases during Q3 2023 compared to 6.1 percent in Q3 2022. As the EV space continues to heat up across all segments, GM is still planning to offer a fully electric vehicle lineup by 2035.

GM CEO Mary Barra says the automaker is still on track to fully transition its new light-duty vehicle lineup to all-electric powertrains by 2035. The chief executive added, however, that while The General was still focused on that goal, it would also adapt to customer demands. Barra’s comments follow GM’s recent decision to abandon plans to build 400,000 EV units in North America by the mid-2024 calendar-year timeframe.

  1. It would be interesting to see within the US where EV’s are selling………there seems to be very little to no interest in Minnesota with transitioning to EV’s with our long cold winters and tons of snow………try pushing one of them out of a ditch on a blustery night……….Barra “adapt to customer demands”……right, more like woke government demands and trying to be at the top of the class just like the Michigan governor….

  2. Funny how there’s mostly just crickets in this comments section for this article. Where’s all the EV’s are failing and they will never sell comments?

WAB above has a valid point, but ICE also loses efficiency when cold and MPG/range drops. I know, I lived in that same mid-west section with the same cold and snow for over 40 years. As the tech develops and they figure more of this out, the colder climates will adapt as well as cold weather range increases.

  3. The Bolt is going away in about 4 weeks when the Lake Orion plant shuts down so now only 5 models and the Silverado is on hold for a year?

    1. The Silverado is not on hold for a year. GM just won’t be expanding to a second manufacturing facility for another year. Probably because they want to wait for expansion until the transition to the NACS connector that Tesla uses.

  4. With Bolt production stopped and 4,000 units in inventory, even if they sell all these in 2024-Q1 and another 6,000 units of other models, their EV sales will crash 50%. In 2024-Q2, it will fall even further as even that remaining 4,000 units of Bolt are not there to sell.

So we dont know when the Gen-3 Bolt arrive in 2025 (Jan or Dec or somewhere in the middle), but GM EV sales will be low until then as the company has postponed the mass production of EVs indefinitely.

  5. I hope GM and other Legacy Automaker aren’t left shocked when sales of BEV’s pickup starting in January.
Buyers are waiting to get the $7500 taken right off the price of the vehicle and NOT have to wait for it when they file their Taxes. So why buy now?
I know I am waiting for January/February. Consumers are very well aware of this huge change.
It was stupid that it wasn’t this way from the get go.
