GM car sales, which in the U.S. include the Chevy Camaro, Corvette, and Malibu, along with the Cadillac CT4 and CT5, increased in the United States but decreased in Canada during the third quarter of 2023. Additionally, GM car sales increased in Mexico – where only the automaker’s Chevy brand sells models.
Cumulative deliveries of GM cars in the United States increased a healthy 29 percent to 55,351 units in Q3 2023, comprised of:
- 7,351 units of the Chevy Camaro, a decrease of over seven percent compared to 7,922 units sold in Q3 2022, and
- 8,409 units of the Corvette, an increase of nearly six percent compared to 7,939 units sold in Q3 2022, and

In the U.S., the Malibu reigns supreme in terms of sales volume, recording 33,280 deliveries to account for 60 percent of GM car sales. This should come as no surprise since it’s the only mainstream (affordable) sedan offered by GM in the U.S. Interestingly enough, it’s also the only sedan currently on sale from the Bow Tie brand.

While the Malibu, Camaro, Corvette, CT4, and CT5 all fall directly within GM’s car category, it can be argued that the term “car” can also be used to describe other types of vehicles. Specifically, we could extend the definition of “car” to unibody crossovers and unibody pickups (though GM doesn’t sell the latter in North America), since they use the same integral body structure as cars, albeit with a different body style that calls for a higher hip point and higher roof height.
Many analysts and industry observers agree, having already begun to define “car” to include traditional cars like sedans, hatchbacks, wagons, coupes, and convertibles, as well as unibody crossovers and pickups. Expanding the definition of “car” to include all GM unibody vehicles sold by Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac shows that sales grew 32 percent to 330,875 units. Furthermore, traditional cars accounted for 17 percent, or about a sixth, of GM’s overall unibody vehicle sales.

Look at that little unsung hero Malibu go! It outsells a good number of Chevrolet’s headline grabbers.
Just goes to show that not everybody wants an SUV or monster truck, regardless of what gm wants to push on people.
Its great that the Malibu is still selling well.
As the owner of a 2014 turbo Malibu, I can attest to it being a great car. Glad Chevrolet has kept building them.
The Camaro outsells the CT4/5 combined, but its getting the axe….
Also, the Corvette is touted to be some sort of superwunder profit machine at 25K sales on a dedicated platform at a dedicated plant that only makes Corvettes and it shares basically nothing with any other GM car but somehow the Camaro is a loser at 24K sales sharing the same platform, engines, and assembly plant as the CT4/5?
That doesn’t add up.
As a retired Accountant at GM, the first question we always asked Management: “What do you want the answer to be?”
These sales reports are no surprise with Malibu leading the way as an affordable desired car that most people can still afford. The CT5 is also leading the way because many people still want a sedan and this one comes with a powerful v-6 or the blackwing V-8 that will cost additional if you have the money. When will GM stop peddling SUV’s and pickups and EV’s to the entire country? This kind of practice happened in the 80’s with scaled down Cadillacs and every sedan looked like the other. This approach cost GM dominance in the US car market and now market share is just a fraction of what it was when the best selling car year after year was the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Time for GM to wake up and build what buyers want not what the CEO wants or what is most profitable. If not all the good jobs once provided by General Motors will be gone forever.
Yes. You are correct. I always challenge anyone to drive thru a school, Wally World, pick one parking lot and see the kias Hyundai Honda Toyota etc. Hardly any GM Ford etc. American brands. Doesn’t take a focus group to figure out GM management has lost their way. Duh. Not everybody can afford a hummer. Mary is run by the green machine. All out for the electric vehicle. Meanwhile the company is not every man’s car company, it’s a rich man’s car company. Not a good look for a so called mass market manufacturer. Meanwhile back at the factory, the foreign competition is eating up the market.
PS: I think GM is intentionally limiting full size utility production. I can’t find anything out west that’s not marked up 20,000 bucks. Used to just drive down and pick my color. No more, just nothing there. Worked for GM my entire life. Used to enjoy going and picking out my new truck. Not any fun any more. Can’t even get a paper brochure on the vehicle. No wonder there’s a lack of enthusiasm for vehicles now. All gone.
Dear retired GMPT,
I worked for GM for 44 years and they have lost their way to appeal to blue collar workers. So many jobs have left the USA because of mismanagement! We are on same page and I have never bought any vehicle that wasn’t gm or built in the USA!
Terry-Retired GM Employee
Numbers are bs, many dealers don’t have any cars. My local Cadillac dealer doesn’t have any ct4 or 5. Just suvs. They said they could order me one but don’t stock cars. It’s bs, these car numbers could go up a lot more.
Ken;
You do realize that if the dealer has no sedans it’s because they didn’t order any for inventory. Its not GMs fault.
It would also follow that if they didn’t order any it’s because they don’t sell well enough for them.
I wonder what percentage of Malibu sales are Fleet. I would want to know how many sold at retail to individuals and if those sales rose or fell. That is the most important number.
But Mary said we wouldn’t buy sedans!?
Crazy Mary will probably cancel these cars to sell more slow-selling EVs.
It seems like the main thing people do not want is Mary Barra.
She closed lordstown saying people don’t want small cars. She is wrong more then she is right.
It would be cheaper to get rid of her and make decisions by flipping a coin. At least we can have a 50 percent chance to make the right choice.
She can’t even read the writing on the wall ,how much money has GM made on EV or lost ..
Megeebee dealers want to sell as does Mary suvs and trucks because they have better profit margins. And it is gms fault because they don’t make enough cars. Dealers can’t order a vehicle if there is none. Wow
Ken:
If the dealer ordered them, they’d be built.
Wow!
Bs. They kept the chips for the vehicles that made them the most profits. Limiting car manufacturing for almost 3 years now. All kinds of people on this site waiting to have there cars made.
