Electric Corvette Could Debut In 2024

General Motors remains committed to its goal to transition its new light-duty vehicle lineup to all-electric powertrains by 2035, despite indications that customer demand for EVs may not be as strong as originally anticipated. Of course, GM’s eventual EV transition will also include the Chevy Corvette, with rumors of an all-electric Chevy Corvette swirling for the past several years. Now, one publication is speculating that a new electric Corvette concept could debut as early as the 2024 calendar year.

Badging on the C8 Corvette.

According to a recent report from MotorTrend, GM will unveil a new electric Corvette concept before the end of 2024. The publication goes on to say that the concept will be recognizable as a C8, but will include design cues plucked from previous generations as well. The report also states that GM will use the concept as a barometer to gauge interest from younger buyers, as well as an opportunity to evolve the Corvette’s styling.

The publication also says that if the long-rumored ICE Corvette crossover has indeed been given the green light, it may also be revealed as early as next year. This possible Corvette crossover is expected to retain the sports car-like performance associated with the nameplate in a manner similar to Porsche’s SUV models.

GM Authority has covered the electric Corvette story for quite some time now, reporting in August of 2022 that General Motors was considering the development of a new Corvette EV to rival models like the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S. Spy photos revealing GM benchmarking the Porsche Taycan would seem to provide further evidence of this.

Under the skin, we expect the electric Corvette to ride on the GM BEV Prime platform and incorporate next-generation GM Ultium batteries and GM Ultium Drive motors for motivation. Critically, GM Authority intel points to a later date than the MotorTrend report with regard to an electric Corvette debut, possibly launching for the 2026 calendar year. Additionally, GM Authority expects an all-electric Corvette crossover or SUV model to follow the launch of Corvette EV sedan.

  1. Pagan cars almost all follow the same formula which is single gear transmission, married to motors, and a giant battery pack. I don’t see this concept being anything special.

Introduce a corvette concept that exclusively is designed to run on efuel made in the west. Now that will sell for another century at least.

    1. Why would GM put any time and resources into developing an electric Corvette sedan, when research has clearly shown that sedans are no longer desirable, and many manufacturers has dropped sedans entirely from their model lineups? I can understand the Crossover/SUV Corvette, but the sedan just doesn’t make much sense for such a niche brand like Corvette.
If GM wants to make an all-electric sedan, put the bow tie on it and release it as a Chevy.

Stop using the Corvette name in vain…any thing other than a two seat sports car using the iconic Corvette name is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!
Put the name Impala SS on it, or any one of a hundred other iconic Chevy historical names throughout history and then “go with it” if that’s what you want to do (good luck with this night mare EV, you’re going to need it, GM) with such a vehicle and pawn it off on America, but for gosh sakes leave the hollowed Corvette name off of this looming disaster….please! Sheesh!

Honestly, if they can pull inspiration from it’s heritage and blend it well with a modern-timeless look(C3-C7-C8); they could quite possibly make something that looks better than the Lamborgini Estoque.

  9. I’d be more interested in it if they called it the Malibu and based the stying off of an old Malibu. I’m not going to buy it just because they put the Corvette name on it.

Again, I understand why Ford gave their EV the Mustang Mach-E name. They wanted to signify that it’s aimed towards those who value performance and not the greenies/tree huggers. I don’t think it worked the way they intended.

What made Tesla successful is that they didn’t try to compete with the big three in building a budget minded EV aimed to cut cost of ownership. They saw the luxury and performance benefits and went after people that would pay for that.

    Reply
    1. Agreed about the Mach E, it did not work the way they intended. It NEVER made sense to anyone outside of their corporate bubble to put the Mustang badge on an electric old woman’s vehicle. The Mach E would have been better off being named something like a play off the Honda CR-V and calling it the CR-E than putting the Mustang name on it.

      1. The Mustang name did fool a lot of people. Ford have been debating long and hard at bringing the Thunderbird name back as a 2 box SUV with a swoopy back like everybody else.

    2. This is just my opinion of course, but the Corvette lost the “sports car” lineage after 67. Granted, there have been many more versions with much more performance, but just not the same feeling.
And, I can’t argue the much-increased overall performance of the later models.

  17. I am a big fan of EVs, would love to see 99.?% cars go electric. But performance cars like Corvette, Porsche, etc., I’m not the least bit interested in a BEV. The visceral, aural, aspect of a hipo ICE going through a semi-auto or manual transmission, is not something you can dismiss or replace with a pointless “fake” trans or fake engine sounds. Create a Corvette group that will will develop and manufacture ICEs, kill off ICEs in all other models, collaborate with Porsche, Ferrari, etc., to develop synth fuels. Fight climate change while still having legit performance cars. Now, just make it happen!

    Reply
    1. Not enough earth for these comically large giant battery packs which get pathetic range. Perhaps for the rich western countries there is enough earth for a short while. BEVs for all isn’t the future and isn’t sustainable for future generations of the world. BEVs do have their place. The earths climate will continue to do what it does like it has throughout the ages. The best thing mankind can do is recycle, increase industrial efficiency, build things to last.

      1. GM should be careful about taking a highly successful sports car and leveraging it’s strength to sell additional low volume variants of the Corvette. Reminds me of the Corvair experiment and it didn’t work out so well! What’s next a Corvette pickup? Chevy should stop with the E Ray while the Corvette still has it’s reputation intact. Copying Porsche isn’t necessary, it doesn’t prove anything to copy competitors. GM should be able to come up with better alternatives, desperation isn’t a good game plan. The execution of the Corvette brand is going to dilute GM’s jewel by making it like the Lumina in the 90’s. Chevy offered the Lumina as a minivan, sedan and coupe. That experiment didn’t go so well. Corvette has always been a sports car, there is really no reason to offer it any other way. Why risk it, especially when sedans aren’t that popular to justify the gamble. GM doesn’t need another SUV model in their lineup, the Caddy Escalade ESV is available for those who need the extra power. The Mustang and Mach E aren’t really comparable, not the same price point. The jury is still out on that Ford decision. GM should leave well enough alone.

  21. The gigantic bloom is off the EV rose for the time being. The initial frantic flap towards electrification will probably give way to a more measured phase-in of EVs as infrastructure, range, battery technology and disposal, and everyday practicality come to the fore. It may well be another 10 years before all of those factors are positively realized. But rest assured it is coming, in fits and starts. I love seeing automotive technology looking to the future, even when they experience a poke in the eye. But when they try too hard, as may be the case with EVs now, the consumer will surely let them know.

  25. Porsche has the 2-door 911, 2-door 718, 4-door Panamera, 4-door EV Taycan, Macan SUV and Cayenne SUV. The 911 which is a direct competitor of the Corvette has the following models of the 911. The 911 Carrera, 911 Carrera Cabriolet, 911 Targa, 911 Turbo, 911 Turbo Cabriolet, 911 Dakar, 911 GT3, 911 GT3RS, and 911 S/T. Please note all the models of the 911 are 2-doors. Chevy Corvette had the following models. Corvette Stingray, Corvette Stingray Convertible, Corvette Z06, Corvette Z06 Convertible., Corvette E-Ray, Corvette E-Ray Convertible and the upcoming Corvette Z51, and Corvette Z51 Convertible. Please note all of the models of the Corvette are 2-doors.

Porsche was smart. Everyone around the world knows the Porsche 911 is their two-door high performance sport car. Period.

Chevy not so smart. Everyone around the world knows the Chevy Corvette is their 2-door high performance sport car. But not for much longer. Chevy wants to bastardize the Corvette brand by adding a Corvette 4-door and Corvette SUV which in the end will kill the iconic Corvette brand. If GM were smart, they would learn from Porsche. Create a 4-door high performance sedan and SUV but give them their own name. Keep it simple stupid (KISS).
