An alleged car thief attempted to outrun pursuing law enforcement by driving a Chevy Silverado pickup truck in reverse, and it was all caught on camera. The pursuit took place in Los Angeles, with LAPD chasing down the suspect and arresting him after the alleged thief crashed the pickup.
Local CBS news affiliate KCAL was on the scene to capture the chase as it unfolded.
Per a report from KCAL, the chase began in the south Los Angeles area and ended in Boyle Heights. In the video, we see the suspect put the Chevy Silverado into reverse after seemingly running into a dead end. The truck is seen maneuvering around police vehicles and through a few alleys as a police helicopter light remains fixed on the pickup. KCAL reports that the Chevy Silverado traveled in reverse for about a minute at speeds up to 30 mph. The truck then backs into an intersection and the driver puts the pickup back in drive before once again taking off.
Later in the video, we see the end of the chase as the driver collides with another vehicle, damaging a few parked cars in the process. The truck appears to be immobilized, and the driver climbs out to try and escape on foot.
At one point, the suspect is seen dropping items from his pocket, even bending down to grab something from his ankle. Despite his best efforts to run away from police, the suspect eventually gives up.
Luckily, no one was seriously injured during the chase. KCAL spoke with the driver whose vehicle was struck by the fleeing Chevy Silverado, who says that collision hit them “pretty hard.”
“The truck itself was immobile after the crash,” the driver said after the Silverado hit their car.
While it’s certainly a relief that the chase did not result in any injuries, the video just goes to show how things could have ended much worse. Check it out right here:
