Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Trailblazer sales during the third quarter of 2023 put the Bow Tie’s popular subcompact crossover in fourth place in a crowded segment, now comprised of 23 entries when ranked by sales volume. The fourth place finish represent a drop from second place posted last quarter, though for a good reason.

The Subaru Crosstrek remained at the top spot from last quarter with a 15 percent slide in sales to 38,502 units. The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales), the Trailblazer’s corporate cousin, moved up three spots to second place with a 499 percent leap to 37,869 units and within 633 deliveries of first. The Honda HR-V followed in third with a 70 percent bump to 33,124 units. The Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales) fell to fourth with a 76 percent jump to 30,671 units, while the Mazda CX-30 placed fifth with a 33 percent swell to 20,775 units. In addition to the two Chevy models, Buick currently fields three entries in this segment. The Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), the Trailblazer’s platform mate, moved up to eighth place with a 104 percent jump to 20,060 units. The all-new Buick Envista (see running Buick Envista sales), the Trax’s platform mate, placed 17th with 5,385 deliveries. Buick’s new entry-level compact enters the segment, having just gone on sale over the summer as an indirect replacement for the discontinued Buick Encore. Consequently, the Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales) fell to 20th place with an 80 percent drop to 701 units.

The all-new 2023 Dodge Hornet

Another entry joining this list for the first time is the all-new 2023 Dodge Hornet, which was revealed as a Chevy Trailblazer rival last year. The revived nameplate arrives as the fourth entry in this segment for Stellantis (when counting the discontinued Fiat 500X). Having gone on sale earlier this year, the Hornet is not making much of an impact, recording a measly 1,753 deliveries this quarter.

From a segment share standpoint, the Trailblazer earned a nine percent share, up two percentage points. The Crosstrek also posted an 11 percent segment share, down a segment-worst seven percentage points, followed by the Trax also with an 11 percent segment share, but up a segment-best eight percentage points year-over-year. The HR-V held a 10 percent share, up two percentage points, while the CX-30 maintained a six percent share. The three other GM models in this space fared as follows:

  • Encore GX earned a six percent share, up two percentage points
  • Envista posted a two percent share
  • (The discontinued) Encore’s share was nil, down a percentage point

The five GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer along with the Buick Envista, Encore, and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 94,686 deliveries. That was good for a 28 percent segment share, commanding more than a quarter of all sales in this space and enough to solidly place The General at the top of the charts.

Meanwhile, Hyundai – with the Kona and Venue – and Kia – with the Seltos, Niro, and Soul – saw a cumulative 64,823 deliveries, good for a combined 20 percent segment share, placing the Korean conglomerate behind GM.

However, a strong argument can be made that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question, but rather competes one segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia entries total nets 49,499 deliveries for a combined 15 percent segment share.

Out of the 11 manufacturers represented here, four field multiple models in this space of 23 entries, though three of those models have been discontinued and will eventually fall off this list. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:

  • GM – 28 percent share, five models (the Buick Encore has been discontinued, joined now by its indirect replacement, the first-ever Buick Envista)
  • Hyundai-Kia
    • 20 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 15 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Subaru – 11 percent share, one model
  • Honda – 10 percent share, one model
  • Stellantis – nine percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued while the all-new Dodge Hornet joins the segment)
  • Mazda – six percent share, one model
  • Nissan – six percent share, one model
  • VW – five percent share, one model
  • Toyota – four percent share, two models
  • Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model
  • Ford – zero percent share, one discontinue model

While fielding multiple entires in a segment seems to result in higher deliveries for a brand or manufacturer, that doesn’t prevent those with a single model – like Subaru and Honda – from holding their own.

Regardless, GM commanded first place, further ahead of Hyundai-Kia this quarter.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment grew a solid 35 percent to 335,371 units during Q3 2023, meaning Trailblazer sales significantly outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Though Chevy Trailblazer sales grew a very strong 76 percent jump, the model slipped a couple spots in the rankings this quarter due to sales of its corporate cousin, the Chevy Trax, racing ahead with a nearly 500 percent leap in sales and the Honda HR-V performing better this time around.

GM has a winning one-two punch with the Bow Tie brand’s Trax and Trailblazer, both of which are popular, solid sellers. Add in sales of the three Buicks currently in this space, and The General takes the top spot among automakers, even ahead of Hyundai-Kia, which typically dominated this space.

About Chevrolet Trailblazer

In February, GM revealed the refreshed 2024 Chevy Trailblazer, showing off updated styling, an overhauled cockpit, new standard features, and more for the small crossover, which initially debuted for the 2021 model year. Additionally, the 2024 Trailblazer also introduces two new exterior paint colors, while offering five interior colorways and wheel options.

In November 2021, the Trailblazer received a perfect reliability rating by Consumer Reports. This was followed by the 2022 Chevy Trailblazer earning a 2022 Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in February 2022, following the same award from IIHS in September 2021 for the 2021 Chevy Trailblazer. Last December, Consumer Reports gave the 2023 Chevy Trailblazer a “recommended” rating.

  1. Do not understand why Chevy did not just market the Trax as 2wd and AWD. Doubt sales would have been any different. They would have saved marketing money and had a run-away winner in sales in the segment.

    1. The Trax is all about price. Trailblazer is usually at least $4K more, trim for trim. Folks galore misunderstand the point behind the new Trax. And everyone knows that both it and the Envista are CARS. TB is an honest CUV.

  2. The new Trax is a Cruze replacement at a higher initial but lower optioned price point.

  3. We bought a 2023 Trail Blazer RS. Nice vehicle, but I noticed the engine in my Harley is bigger by 10 cc’s. The Trail Blazer is more comfortable in the rain and Winter however..

  4. Considering you couldn’t get a Trailblazer until Aug 23 in Canada the #’s are not surprising. Been a great vehicle so far with lots of get up and go considering it’s a 3 cyl 1.3 litre engine. Just wish they had made the park assist a retrofit instead of a deled option like they did for many of the other vehicle the produced. Found that very disappointing.

  5. It would be a more useful sales comparison, imho, if you also included cars in the subcompact plus segment from other manufacturers. I fully understand it’s not the same segment, but seeing that lowercase gm ONLY offers crossovers, it seems logical that people may decide to choose a similar sized sedan/wagon such as the widely popular Corolla or Civic, therefore those would be sales lost to competition.
