General Motors is aiming to transition its light-duty vehicle portfolio to all-electric powertrains by 2035, but until then, The General will offer a mix of vehicles and powertrains, including models powered by a internal combustion engine (ICE), as well as all-electric vehicles (EVs). Notably, Chevrolet believes it currently has the “right mix” of both ICE vehicles and EVs to meet customer needs.
That much was communicated by Chevrolet marketing executives during the recent Chevy Blazer EV launch, attended by GM Authority.
Indeed, Chevy does offer a broad mix of vehicles, with the Chevy portfolio including models in both the ICE and the EV segments:
Chevrolet EVs
- Bolt EV (discontinued)
- Bolt EUV (discontinued)
- Blazer EV
- Silverado EV
- Equinox EV (launching soon)
Chevrolet ICE Vehicles
- Trax
- Trailblazer
- Equinox
- Blazer
- Traverse
- Tahoe
- Suburban
- Malibu
- Camaro (discontinued)
- Corvette (also available as a hybrid)
- Colorado
- Silverado 1500
- Silverado HD
- Silverado MD (commercial only)
- Express
That’s quite the portfolio, and it demonstrates how Chevy essentially has “one foot in both camps” with regard to the ICE and EV segments. What’s more, the strategy appears to be working well, with Chevrolet sales increasing by more than 18 percent year-over-year for the first nine months of 2023 to 1,304,104 units total. The latest sales figures also indicate a 21.2-percent increase in sales for Q3 of the 2023 calendar year compared to Q3 of the 2022 calendar year, up to 451,917 units sold for Q3 of 2023 as compared to 372,873 units sold for Q3 of 2022.

Notably, GM announced this past October that it was pulling back on its ambitions to build 400,000 EV units in North America by the mid-2024 calendar-year timeframe, with GM CEO Mary Barra recently stating that the automaker will “continually evaluate EV demand and adjust production schedules” accordingly. GM still intends on transitioning its light-duty lineup to EVs by 2035.
“We’re going to be led by the customer,” Barra said regarding GM’s EV transition. “But I do believe this transition will happen over a period of time.”

GM as a whole spent way too much time and resources on EVs in 2023, many of which will prove unsellable and this needs to come to a screeching halt in 2024.
Need some Hybrids mixed in!! Battery and ICE!! GM/Chevy lost 2 sales to little me in the last year not offering Hybrid options. Hunting & Fishing & bad weather driving do not go well with range anxiety!!
Mary needs to go
I’m still not sure their customers are on board with the plan.
I certainly am not!
Bring back my Camaro! ICE only
GM is not building EV for the customers or because they want to. They are building them now to help bring dow price and to perfect them by 2035.
People need to learn that we have pending laws that are forcing all automakers to EV no matter if you like it or not.
Even if the EPA backs off the Carb states that account for 44% of the market are not expect to change their minds. The other is the next election could bring back these laws even if removed.
GM will play the dual role of sone EV and mostly Ice till they can no longer do it.
If you have been paying attention GM is even doing a new V8.
GM will market the EV as the Gas sells itself.
To not invest and continue to develop EV would be a major disaster hen the time comes they force GM and others to remove ICE.
Finally someone with common sense who sees the bigger picture.
I work in the performance industry and I see first hand the laws that are coming and being forced on us.
Most on the web are clueless to how tough the coming regs are and how difficult it will be to walk them back in many places.
We all need to really focus and make those running for office to commit to us and not some party Green agenda.
I hope this becomes front and center in the presidential race but even the near half the market is state controlled against ICE in the future.
What GM is doing is about survival. Unless some EV is sold it will never get better or cheaper. They are trying to balance the development while still keeping ICE as long as possible.
Good assessment CR, but you’re leaving out one VERY important factor.
gm is angering a lot of life-long customers in the process who will never come back. This will be irreversible.
Exactly. All of this early EV development and implementation, is merely necessary preparation to meet the eventual mandates that are non-moving goal posts. It is inevitable and 100 years from now the long-term benefits of the prices that we pay today, will be realized by future generations.
We will continue to see development of battery technologies that will be engineered to inhibit exothermic uncontrollable thermal runaway events. Lithium ion is quickly becoming the old news, as other technologies abound, including plasma-based graphene aluminum ion, which has significantly improved charging capabilities.
It’s still early days, so we can expect huge developments in battery technologies in readiness for the real mass phasing in of EVs where the major issues have been significantly addressed.
Thank you GMA for all the articles over this last year. I would like to make a request once the sales numbers are in for 2023.
It would be interesting to see a comparison of US market share by auto brand and summed up to manufacturer, for the top auto companies. Compare 2019 (the last “normal” year prior to COVID) to 2023. How have the largest companies done in share, given the monumental change impacting the auto industry?
Chevrolet does not sell a subcompact gasoline auto since the demise of tbe Sonic and Spark. So there is no equivalent to the electric Bolt.
Too funny that GM has the right ev ice balance. People don’t want them and GM can’t make them. Perfect balance. lol
Blundering Barra said GM would have 20 EVs on the market by 2024.
Time tells how much she doesn’t know.
Wonder if she is stuck in fantasy land after her board meeting at Disney. Lol
mary needs take a hard line with government nut jobs who are trying to force the market to buy a product it don’t want. I, for one, am tired of those self-righteous political appointees trying to tell me what to drive and how to cook my food. Stand up to them mary. you can do it.
they should also support one set of standards not 50. Following California rules is crazy. Automakers should be able to choose federal or the states regs for their fleet. Interstate commerce clause rules this right? any lawyers out there?
If I’m reading this right, the only EV Chevy currently manufactures is the Blazer EV RS. Everything else is either ‘pending’, (whatever that means), or is discontinued.
Someone said the Bolt EUV is not discontinued… Which is it?
The Bolt EV and EUV should have ended production one and a half weeks ago, if GM stuck to their plans from last month.
Chevrolet is also currently manufacturing the Silverado EV, but it is still in the ramp up stage with only fleet deliveries initially.
Wrong mix. GM has major problems with EV products; look at your Blazer EV & Bolt, many issues, batteries, seat belt. Should be like Leader, Toyota; hydrogen fuel cell. EVs failed over a hundred years ago.
When are you coming out with Steam power? Going backwards.
Think they’re “trapped in their own sunshine”.
Agree that a mix of ICE and EV is required, however, it needs to be in the same vehicle, not two separate ones. It is called a hybrid. Too bad GM squandered their leadership position in hybrids by giving up on the Volt architecture.
Gm authority says gm is on the right track.
Got it thanks.
These branded opinion piece ms on EVs are just ridiculous.
Makes one wonder who is driving these silly articles? Paid advertisements by GM?
I also wonder how many of the comments on this site are paid for by Mary’s propaganda machine.
It becomes obvious there is a defining line between common sense comments and pro GM at and cost out of touch loonies.
They need a plug in hybrid car, like the Volt. Something for daily driving as an EV and still be able to make longer trips when needed.
When Chevrolet says they have the “right mix,” that’s a signal that they aren’t going to add additional EVs any time soon. They unveiled the EV plan all wrong. First they let Tesla get ahead in the game. Then they panicked and came out with rushed products that suffer from manufacturing defects or inadequate software. There’s still more than enough time and space in the EV market to take things slowly. If GM came out with HEVs and PHEVs along with perhaps two really polished EVs, they would be doing quite well.
I assume a HEV is a hydrogen fueled vehicle? Too many unknown acronyms impair readability.
No Hydrogen refueling points anywhere remotely near me….. California can have all they want.
These names keep changing. HEV = hybrid electric vehicle (just a regular old hybrid). PHEV = plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. It’s shorter to type in the acronym rather than typing “hybrid and plug-in vehicle” all the time.
Almost unbelievable as to the potential mess GM has on its hands. I know that GM Managers need ‘problems to manage’ and they surely have enough of them that are somewhat costly.
As far as personal experience goes, supposedly GM will give me a $1,400 debit card for getting my Bolt EUV recalled prior to 2024, which I did last week.. Now there is just plenty of Red Tape with the EV Concierge to make this actually transpire.
Parallel to that, my Caddy Dealer just returned my LYRIQ with a brand new $20,000 propulsion battery after having the car for a month… The dealer charged GM $2,000 for labor, and $1,500 for the nicer LYRIQ loaner, presumably so NY State lemon law wouldn’t be triggered… In addition, GM paid for a consultant to come to the Buffalo, NY area to help troubleshoot the battery problem… So add plenty of $$$ for his expenses, and loaded costing. And of course towing charges.
So, I figure GM spent $25,000 minimum to fix my car, of which they had to do it before when the 12 volt battery went dead, and they had to fix the infotainment software before to get THAT battery working.
GM will need to sell plenty of absolutely flawless LYRIQs to make up for all the CA$H they’ve spent on me… Might be good of them to remember the decades old moniker:
“Build it right the first time”, haha.
GM doesn’t really have a competitive EV widely available now that they cut the bolt. People on this board complaining GM has over interested in EVs… But no one can even but one currently.
They are failing on execution, it’s hard to criticize their portfolio or applaude it when it hasn’t even come to fruition.
Hybrids! That’s what we want. That’s what we need.
I am a mechanical engineer, lifelong car guy, and retiring soon. I see a huge market for refurbishing ICE vehicles. And when you can only buy electric half ton pickups I will also be re-gearing HD trucks to get better mileage for people who still want an ICE truck but not the low mileage of an HD.
Boomer59, I agree completely not only to avoid being forced to buy an EV but also to avoid the high cost of new vehicles. Are you considering starting your own refurbishing business after retirement?
bring back the Sonic, Cruze, Camaro, and Impala.
“Right mix”, my *ss!
