The GM Authority Take

Cadillac XT6 sales helped the luxury marque’s largest crossover outsell its cross-town rival, the Lincoln Aviator, which faced significant supply and availability headwinds during the third quarter. Incidentally, the Aviator will receive a mid-cycle update for the 2024 model year to make it more competitive. By comparison, we expected a refresh for the XT6 for the 2024 model year, but have yet to get any specifics on such an update, despite the model needing one in order to remain competitive in this fierce segment.

On the availability front, Cadillac’s new-vehicle inventory was at 46 days’ supply in September, potentially adversely affecting XT6 sales, though it improved slightly to 48 days’ supply in October. A 60-day supply is considered optimal in the U.S. auto industry by many automotive sales organizations such as the National Automotive Dealers Association (NADA). For reference, a 60-day inventory level means that dealerships have enough inventory on hand to sustain current sales volume for roughly the next 60 days.

Inventory levels for the XT6 specifically may suffer some more since, at the end of October, the UAW expanded its now-concluded strike to the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee, impacting production for nearly three weeks.

It’s worth noting that Cadillac has been ranked as the third-most considered luxury brand for a second consecutive quarter, edged out by Lexus and BMW in second and first, respectively. Recently Cadillac ranked above average in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Sales Satisfaction Index, ahead of Lexus and BMW this time, but behind Lincoln and Infiniti. Those rankings suggest that Cadillac is being considered, yet does not ultimately earn the sale, at least when it comes to the XT6.

The good news is that combined sales of the XT6 and Buick Enclave pushed GM into second place in this segment. That said, we would much rather prefer the XT6 to sell at least twice the volume that it does today, something that will only be possible if GM substantially boosts production of the model, while also making it more competitive from product standpoint.

About Cadillac XT6

The 2023 Cadillac XT6 ushered in only a few small updates and changes over the 2022 Cadillac XT6, including a driving coverage expansion for the GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assistance feature.

Last summer, the Cadillac XT6 ranked as the best upper midsize premium utility in the J.D. Power 2022 Initial Quality Study (IQS). Additionally, the 2023 Cadillac XT6 received a “Poor” rating in IIHS updated side crash test, though it earned a “Good” rating, the highest IIHS score, in every other category.

The 2024 Cadillac XT6 arrives as the fourth model year of the first generation model. It receives few changes and updates (see 2024 Cadillac XT6 changes), the most significant of which is a trio of new accent packages – the Red Accent Package, Blue Accent Package, and Bronze Accent Package.

While there are currently no announced plans for an XT6 refresh, Cadillac continues to focus heavily on electric vehicles.

GM recently unveiled the first-ever all-electric Cadillac Optiq as the luxury marque’s entry-level EV offering to eventually indirectly replace the XT4 and low-end XT5 models, even though the former just received a refresh for the 2024 model year while an all-new XT5 is in the works for China, and now potentially for North America. The all-electric Cadillac Lyriq, which is on sale, but has yet to reach high sales volume, will eventually serve as an indirect replacement for high-end XT5 models, while a yet unnamed three-row crossover will round out Cadillac’s EV portfolio. This model will likely be called the Cadillac Symboliq, and it’s expected to replace the aging XT6.

Here’s to hoping that the XT6 receives the refresh that it so very much deserves. Until then, the current model will continue being an also-ran in the sales charts.

  1. Perhaps the XT6 will be reconsidered for a refresh.

  2. This thing is so ugly. Proportions are way out of whack. Looks like a deformed station wagon.
Come on Cadillac! You have been building this thing for years. You can do so much better.
“At least we are not last” should NOT be Cadillac’s sales motto.

  3. How is the Audi Q8 and the BMW X6 in the same segment?
The XT6 needed to be replaced with something much more modern the minute is was unveiled Lol
Terrible execution by the GM Team!!!

    1. Both the Q8 and X6 are body variants of the Q7 and X5, respectively, both of which are direct XT6 competitors.

  4. The XT6 is what voting present looks like. It’s okay and checks the boxes but absolutely not worth MSRP. And now it’s very dated.

Cadillac had a very tight timeline to throw it together…just like the Cimmaron. It exists only because Cadillac wanted a 3 row and GM was ignoring them as they often do. Unlike the Cimmaron, the XT6 isn’t seeing significant improvements as it ages.

The redesign better be a home run. Cadillac dealers are going to revolt if they don’t have a decent crossover in this segment.
