Cadillac XT6 Fares Poorly In IIHS Updated Moderate Overlap Front Crash Test: Video

Perhaps one of – if not the – most important thing many prospective buyers consider before purchasing a vehicle is how safe it is in the event of a crash. In order to provide consumers with this vital data, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently tested the Cadillac XT6 with its updated crash test procedures, and the luxury marque’s midsize crossover posted the worst overall score of its segment.

In the recent testing, the XT6 was given a marginal rating in regard to rear-passenger head and neck protection, and a poor rating in rear-passenger chest and restraints. Although the Caddy crossover received a good rating in every other category, those aforementioned faults lead to an overall rating of poor.

Meanwhile, three other vehicles received good ratings, two received acceptable, and two received marginal scores.

“It’s encouraging that more than half of the 2024 midsize luxury SUVs we tested performed well in our updated moderate overlap front crash test,” IIHS President David Harkey stated. “The three good ratings in this group show that our new, tougher standards are achievable when manufacturers commit to excellence.”

One common trend the agency discovered across the midsize luxury crossover segment was that the crash dummy had a tendency to “submarine” or slide forward underneath the lap belt in the event of head-on collision. This is a notable area of concern, as this event could lead to an increased risk of abdominal injuries.

“Though several vehicles in this class performed extremely well, the fact that we saw submarining in half the models we tested shows that many manufacturers still have work to do to improve restraint systems in the second row,” Harkey continued.

As a reminder, the Cadillac XT6 is offered with either the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LSY gasoline engine, rated at 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, or the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGX gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. Both powerplants are managed by the GM nine-speed automatic transmission, while FWD is standard and AWD is optional.

Under the skin, the XT6 rides on the GM C1 platform, while production for the North American 2024 model commenced in June 2023 at the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee.

  1. Dies anyone under 80 buy these? Such an outdated product with no end in site. Caddy can’t wait to until it only takes $100k EVs to 500 buyers a year

  2. As the owner of a ‘23 XT6, this isn’t surprising. The XT6 is mediocre in every aspect, completely uncompetitive, and emblematic of cynical, old, pre-bankruptcy GM. The old bean counters that put GM into bankruptcy would be so proud of the XT6.

    1. Just curious, why did you buy a car that you consider “mediocre in every aspect”?

      1. The lease was up on my Escalade and I refused to pay the obscene markups dealers were asking at the time. Took a quick spin in the XT6, and at the time, found it completely inoffensive, so I purchased as the dealer would sell at a slight discount. It’s in living with it for a year now that I’ve discovered how truly awful it is, as a Cadillac. As a top line Chevrolet I’d recommend without hesitation, but there’s no way it deserves to be called a Cadillac

  3. I don’t see any where that it can be “Poor.”
All the doors held, cabin in tact, dummies were not slinging all over the place…heck the hood didn’t buckle, nor did the windshield crack.

  4. XT6 needs to disappear and be replaced with Vistiq ASAP.
The XT6 was just a horrific execution by GM to the point that they should be ashamed.
