The first-ever 2024 Buick Envista, debuting as the Tri-Shield brand's all-new entry-level crossover, is shown here in the Sport Touring (ST) trim.

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Buick Envista sales during the third quarter of 2023 put the Tri-Shield brand’s new entry-level subcompact crossover in 17th place out of 23 nameplates when ranked by sales volume. The Subaru Crosstrek remained in the top spot from last quarter with a 15 percent drop in sales to 38,502 units. The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales) moved up three spots to second place with a 499 percent leap to 37,869 units, within 633 deliveries of first. The Honda HR-V followed in third with a 70 percent bump to 33,124 units. The Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), the Trax’s corporate cousin and the second segment entry from Chevy, fell to fourth with a 76 percent jump to 30,671 units, while the Mazda CX-30 placed fifth with a 33 percent swell to 20,775 units. In addition to the two Chevy models, Buick currently fields three entries. The Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), the Trailblazer’s platform mate, moved up to eighth place with a 104 percent jump to 20,060 units. The Envista (see running Buick Envista sales), the Trax’s platform mate, placed 17th with 5,385 deliveries. As Buick’s new entry-level model, the Envista enters the segment after going on sale over the summer as an indirect replacement for the discontinued Buick Encore. Consequently, the Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales) fell to 20th place with an 80 percent drop to 701 units.

The all-new 2023 Dodge Hornet

Another entry we’ve added to this report for the first time is the all-new 2023 Dodge Hornet. It arrives as the fourth entry in this segment for Stellantis, which includes the discontinued Fiat 500X. Having gone on sale earlier this year, the Hornet is not making much of an impact, recording just 1,753 deliveries this quarter.

From a segment share standpoint, the Envista posted a two percent share. The Trax earned an 11 percent segment share, up a segment-best eight percentage points year-over-year. The Crosstrek also held an 11 percent segment share, down a segment-highest seven percentage points. The HR-V posted a 10 percent share, up two percentage points, while the Trailblazer earned a nine percent share, up two percentage points, and the CX-30 maintained a six percent share. The two other Buick models in this space fared as follows:

  • The Encore GX earned a six percent share, up two percentage points
  • The Encore’s share was nil, down one percentage point

The five GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer along with the Buick Envista, Encore, and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 94,686 deliveries. That was good for a 28 percent segment share, commanding more than a quarter of all segment sales and enough to solidly place The General at the top.

However, a strong argument can be made that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question, but rather competes one segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia entries total nets 49,499 deliveries for a combined 15 percent segment share.

Out of the 11 manufacturers represented here, four field multiple models in this space of now 23 entries, though three of those models have been discontinued and will eventually fall off this list. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:

  • GM – 28 percent share, five models (the Buick Encore has been discontinued, joined now by its indirect replacement, the first-ever Buick Envista)
  • Hyundai-Kia
    • 20 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 15 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Subaru – 11 percent share, one model
  • Honda – 10 percent share, one model
  • Stellantis – nine percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued while the all-new Dodge Hornet joins the segment)
  • Mazda – six percent share, one model
  • Nissan – six percent share, one model
  • VW – five percent share, one model
  • Toyota – four percent share, two models
  • Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model
  • Ford – zero percent share, one model (this model has been discontinued)

While fielding multiple entires in a segment seems to result in higher quantities of deliveries for a manufacturer, that doesn’t prevent those with a single model – like Subaru and Honda – from holding their own.

Regardless, GM commanded first place, even further ahead of Hyundai-Kia this quarter.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment grew a solid 35 percent to 335,371 units during Q3 2023.

The GM Authority Take

The Buick Envista’s first sales quarter are already 50 percent better than those of the Encore a year ago. We expect Envista sales to experience very healthy grown in the coming quarters as the product is very attractive and competitive. In fact, the Envista brings the crossover coupe body style, which has been limited to costly high-end models from Europe, to the masses.

About Buick Envista

In April, GM debuted the first-ever 2024 Buick Envista for the U.S. market as the Tri-Shield brand’s all-new entry-level crossover. As GM’s first crossover coupe, the Buick Envista incorporates the marque’s latest design language originally introduced by the Buick Wildcat EV concept. Highlights include a long wheelbase, a quickly-sloping roofline, and a dual-tier headlight arrangement.

Three distinct trim levels are offered on the 2024 Envista – Preferred, Sport Touring, and range-topping Avenir. ST trim levels are equipped with all-black 18-inch wheels as standard, with 19-inch wheels optional. Meanwhile, the Avenir trim level comes with Pearl Nickel 19-inch wheels as standard.

Take a look at all the 2024 Envista paint colors and interior colors.

GM claims that the Buick Envista offers the driving dynamics of a sedan, which we experienced first-hand a few months ago. Check out our first drive impressions in the video below:

Additionally, the Envista features more legroom than in any small Buick crossover model prior. The cabin incorporates 19 diagonal inches of combined LCD screens, including an 11-inch diagonal infotainment screen and an eight-inch digital gauge cluster. Avenir and ST logos are embroidered in the headrests, while a flat-bottom steering wheel is standard across the range.

The all-new Envista is motivated by the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, which is rated at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. Output is routed through the GM six-speed automatic transmission, driving the front wheels exclusively.

The Buick Driver Confidence Package is included as standard, adding in Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and IntelliBeam high-beam headlights.

The 2024 Buick Envista is one of 10 GM models among North American Car of the Year candidates, competing with six of those in the 2024 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year category.

  1. Inventory is probably hindering sales some with this car. Although not spectacular numbers, it’s not bad for it’s first year on sale with few knowing about it or what it is. Just goes to show that if you design and produce a nice looking vehicle with a nice interior and good driving characteristics, people will buy it no matter if a 3, 4, 6, 8 Cyl or EV. It’s about price, looks and feel.

Does Buick advertise anywhere? I see a commercials for Cadillac now and then and lots of Chevy (truck/SUV only) on free TV programming. I honestly can’t tell you the last time I’ve seen any Buick ad. What gives?

    Reply
  2. And without any advertising. Buick never seems to learn. People aren’t going to buy a car they’ve never heard of. Regal, Crosstour, last Gen Lacrosse, etc.

    1. No advertising and dropping over half of the dealers (that have lots to show off inventory/new models) to focus more on online sales seems like a bad combination.

      Reply
  3. Attractive low cost vehicle but definitely not premium. Seems GM is making Buick more accessible and will benefit with increased volume.
GM owns both compact and large segments. They would be extremely profitable if EV was scaled back and only included Cadillac.
