Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Buick Encore GX sales during the third quarter of 2023 put the nameplate into eighth place in a crowded segment of currently 23 entries when ranked by sales volume. Compared to last quarter, the Subaru Crosstrek remained first with a 15 percent slide in sales to 38,502 units. The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales) moved up three spots to second place with 499 percent leap to 37,869 units and within 633 deliveries of first. The Honda HR-V placed third with a 70 percent bump to 33,124 units. The Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), the Trax’s corporate cousin and the second segment entry from Chevy, slipped to fourth with a 76 percent jump to 30,671 units, while the Mazda CX-30 took fifth with a 33 swell to 20,775 units.
Buick currently fields three entries in this segment. The Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales) – the Chevy Trailblazer’s platform mate – moved up to eighth place with a 104 percent jump to 20,060 units. The first-ever, all-new Buick Envista (see running Buick Envista sales), the Trax’s platform mate, placed 17th with 5,385 deliveries. Buick’s new entry-level subcompact joins this list, having just gone on sale over the summer as an indirect replacement for the discontinued Buick Encore. Consequently, the Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales) fell to 20th place with an 80 percent drop to 701 units.
An additional entry that’s new to this report is the all-new 2023 Dodge Hornet, which was revealed as a Chevy Trailblazer rival last year. It arrives as the fourth entry in this segment for Stellantis. Having gone on sale earlier this year, the Hornet is not making much of an impact, with just 1,753 deliveries this quarter.

The five GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer along with the Buick Envista, Encore, and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 94,686 deliveries. That was good for a 28 percent segment share, commanding more than a quarter of all sales in this space and enough to solidly place The General at the top.

Out of the 11 manufacturers represented here, four field multiple models in this space of now 23 entries, though three of those models have been discontinued and will eventually fall off this list. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:
- GM – 28 percent share, five models (the Buick Encore has been discontinued, joined now by its indirect replacement, the first-ever Buick Envista)
- Hyundai-Kia
- 20 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
- 15 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
- Subaru – 11 percent share, one model
- Honda – 10 percent share, one model
- Stellantis – nine percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued while the all-new Dodge Hornet joins the segment)
- Mazda – six percent share, one model
- Nissan – six percent share, one model
- VW – five percent share, one model
- Toyota – four percent share, two models
- Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model
- Ford – zero percent share, one model (this model has been discontinued)
While fielding multiple entires in a segment seems to result in higher quantities of deliveries for a manufacturer, that doesn’t prevent those with a single model – like Subaru and Honda – from holding their own.
Regardless, GM commanded first place, further ahead of Hyundai-Kia this time quarter.
Overall, the mainstream subcompact crossover segment grew a solid 35 percent to 335,371 units during Q3 2023, meaning Encore GX sales significantly outperformed the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
Buick Encore GX sales more than doubled on a year-over-year basis, almost placing in the top third of this segment with 23 entries. Overall, it would appear as if the fully-refreshed 2024 Encore GX is a hit. Better yet, combining sales of all three Buick models along with the two Chevy ones put GM in command of the segment for more than a quarter of all sales. We expect Encore GX sales to continue to grow in subsequent quarters as allowed by supply and production volume.
A couple of things to also note: in October, Buick average transaction price (ATP) was down 6.5 percent, likely due to the success of the Envista and Encore GX, the premium marque’s two smallest and least expensive crossovers. At the same time, Buick vehicle inventory increased significantly with 107 days supply, meaning plenty of units continue to be available for sale. However, that figure is likely distorted by irregularly high inventory of the Enclave.
About Encore GX
The refreshed 2024 Buick Encore GX incorporates fresh exterior styling cues as well as big updates to the interior, while also adding the range-topping Avenir trim level, and new tech headlined by Buick’s Virtual Cockpit System.
Outside, winged LED headlamps are standard across the range, while LED taillights are equipped higher in the range. New 18-inch and 19-inch wheel options are also on offer.
The Avenir trim level, offered for the first time ever on the Encore GX starting with the 2024 model year, offers exclusive design cues, features, and premium materials, including a unique grille, unique clear LED taillights, unique 19-inch wheels, chrome body accents, and black carbon metallic body side molding. Inside, the Encore GX Avenir features leather seating, a 10-way power driver seat, heated steering wheel, and an air ionizer system.
The refreshed 2024 Encore GX also reimagines the ST trim for a sportier demeanor, incorporating high-gloss black front and rear bumpers, an optional Black Roof Package, and a flat-bottom steering wheel.
The refreshed model’s Virtual Cockpit features 19 inches of screen real estate via an 11-inch infotainment screen and 8-inch configurable driver cluster screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard, while wireless phone charging is optional.
The Buick Driver Confidence package is standard, and includes many safety features plus Adaptive Cruise Control. Finally, the 2024 model year refresh includes some mild powertrain enhancements.
Standard spec under the hood is the familiar turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, which is rated at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged 1.3L I3 L3T gasoline engine, rated at 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque, is available as an option. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional, with front-wheel-drive models equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), and all-wheel-drive models equipped with the GM 9-speed automatic transmission.
Last July J.D. Power released results of its 2022 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS), ranking major car brands and models based on consumer feedback. It listed the Buick Encore GX as the best small utility, besting the Buick Encore and Ford Bronco Sport.

Yay! Great news for Buick and GM…..and for car buyers. Buick’s continued strength is a wonderful thing for those of us that love the Buick touch….quality, reliability, sexy design, premium appointments, fun and easy to operate tech, and great “bang for the buck”. The dealership experience is a pleasure, as is service (in my opinion). I’ll say it again, Buick is a money making gem for GM in the US, and a straight-out cash cow in China. Remarkably, Buick’s first advertising slogan from way back at the beginning was ”The car of quality”. Nice to know that over one hundred twenty years later, that remains true.
Women make up the vast majority of its market. That reviewers fail to mention.
If the 3 cylinder is like the 1 4T in the first gen, good cheaper vehicle to buy and then sale it at 74,999 miles before the warranty runs out
Buick USA is only here because of China. Wake up from your dream.
Trailblazer does it for me but not this thing. Sales are up because Buick/GMC dealers offer the highest discounts within GM.
People buying Chinese garbage
The fact is that the Encore GX & its corporate cousins are built in South Korea which is a strategic partner with the US. The Buick Envision is made in China and from what I have read a very good vehicle. Unfortunately, it seems that GM will not be making those in the US. If they did, they would probably sell more of them. I cannot remember when I last saw where I live.
