After stepping away from full-time Cup Series competition, stock car racing veteran AJ Allmendinger will take a shot at the 2024 Daytona 500, driving the No. 16 NASCAR Chevy Camaro ZL1 fielded by Kaulig Racing in The Great American Race next year, as per a recent report from Jayski.
The 2024 Daytona 500 will be Allmendinger’s 11th attempt at the event. So far, he hasn’t found Victory Lane at the track in the Cup Series or Xfinity Series, and boasts third-place finishes in the 2009, 2017 and 2018 Daytona 500.
Allmendinger drove the No. 16 Cup Series Camaro full-time for Kaulig in 2023, driving it to the win at the Charlotte Roval in October, four top-five finishes and seven top-10s last season. He finished 21st in the overall championship before he announced that he would step down from the Cup Series, returning to fulltime Xfinity Series competition in 2024, where he will drive the No. 16 Camaro for Kaulig. He will also compete in select Cup races during the 2024 season with Kaulig.
“My plans for 2024 have always been whatever Matt Kaulig and Chris Rice think is best for the team. We’ve got work to do on both our Xfinity and Cup side as we continue to grow, but I think we are putting ourselves in the best position to keep improving,” Allmendinger said. “I’m excited to be a part of everything we’re working on at Kaulig Racing and see what we can get done next season.”
It’s likely that the No. 16 NASCAR Chevy Camaro will feature a rotating roster of part-time drivers in the Cup Series, meaning that Allmendinger will not be replaced by a full-time entry. Currently, Kaulig also fields the No. 31 Camaro in the Cup Series, which will be driven by Daniel Hemric fulltime next year.
The 66th running of the Daytona 500 is scheduled for February 18th, 2024.
