700-HP Cadillac CTS-V Drag Races Diesel BMW 3 Series: Video

Even with the broader auto industry making moves to go full EV, we here at GM Authority still have lots of love for all the flavors of internal combustion, whether its gasoline or diesel, supercharged or turbocharged. Make it fast, and consider our interest piqued. Now, we’re watching as this gasoline-fueled Cadillac CTS-V takes on a diesel-powered BMW 3 Series in some heads-up drag racing.

Once again coming to us from the folks at Hoonigan, the video is about 14 minutes long, and includes walkarounds and specs on both vehicles, plus several rounds of racing action.

Let’s kick it off with a quick look at the 2013 Cadillac CTS-V. For those readers who may be unaware, the CTS-V cradles the supercharged 6.2L V8 LSA gasoline engine, which, in stock guise, churns out a maximum of 556 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 551 pound-feet of torque at 3,800 rpm, topping out at a maximum engine speed of 6,200 rpm. As is tradition, this particular example is modified for extra performance, with the owner tossing in a new cam, a new upper pulley, a new intake, and a new heat exchanger, plus the requisite tune. Output is estimated at 700 horsepower, which reaches the pavement via the rear wheels. Handling the traction duties is a set of Nitto NT555 tires.

Over in the other lane, we have a 2010 BMW 335d, which is running a 3.0L I6 diesel engine with a compound turbo setup. The turbo is still stock, but the down pipe was replaced, the EGR system was deleted, and the resonator was deleted as well. There’s also a splash of methanol injection added to the mix. Output is estimated at 380 horsepower at the wheels, plus 600 pound-feet of torque.

The Bimmer has the torque and weight advantage, but the Cadillac CTS-V has the raw power. It’s gasoline versus diesel, supercharged versus turbocharged. Which machine will walk away with the win? Hit play to find out:
