2024 GMC Sierra 1500 Gets New Downpour Metallic Paint: First Look

The 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 adds two new exterior colors to its palette: Thunderstorm Gray and Downpour Metallic. Here’s our first look at the new Blue hue.

Assigned RPO code GXP and touch-up paint code WA-136H, Downpour Metallic is one of 11 exterior colors offered on the light-duty pickup truck, which include:

  • Cardinal Red
  • Deep Bronze Metallic
  • Dynamic Blue Metallic
  • Onyx Black
  • Sterling Metallic
  • Summit White
  • Titanium Rush Metallic
  • Volcanic Red Tintcoat
  • White Frost Tricoat
  • Downpour Metallic (new for 2024)
  • Thunderstorm Gray (new for 2024)

The Downpour Metallic color is an extra-cost option priced at $495. It is available on all trim levels except AT4 and AT4X and can be combined with all available interior colorways. As of November 2023 production, Downpour Metallic is no longer available on the Elevation trim level.

For reference, here are the six available interior colorways offered on the 2024 Sierra 1500:

  • Jet Black (Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, Denali)
  • Dark Walnut/Slate (SLE, SLT)
  • Jet Black with Kalahari accents (AT4)
  • Obsidian Rush (AT4X)
  • Atmosphere/Brownstone (Denali)
  • Alpine Umber (Denali Ultimate)

The 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 is motivated by a significant lineup of powerplant options. These include the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine (now branded as TurboMax), rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine producing 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine generating 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, and, finally, the 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax rated at 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque.

One significant engine change for the 2024 Sierra is the use of the LZ0 turbodiesel as the standard power source for the off-road-oriented 2024 GMC Sierra AT4X. The L87 gasoline engine, formerly the only powerplant for the Sierra AT4X, is now available as an option.

Also, the 2024 Sierra 1500 offers a new drop-in bedliner.

Production of the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 is currently under way at both the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana and the GM Silao plant in Mexico.

  2. Hope it doesn’t flake-off within the first four years like the white frost tricoat did on my 2014 Sierra . You will be stuck driving an eyesore because GM won’t stand behind their product.

    1. You should see my Deep Ocean Metallic on my 2017 Silverado, it’s so crappy that it doesn’t get stone chips, it gets stone streaks, takes the damn paint off in 2 inch lines.

      1. What a bummer.
I guess I am lucky that my 18 still looks great.
        I love the color.
Too bad that they could not perfect a way to eliminate all the orange peel at the factory.

  3. This color has been out since August of 2023, it’s also much lighter in person. GM Authority should rename themselves to Thanks Dave.

    1. This is the same colour that’s offered on the Silverado. The pics themselves are very misleading, as the colour itself is considerably lighter when you see it in real life. It’s basically a mid -blue colour. I thought I was getting a navy blue, but was disappointed to see this lighter colour although all who’ve seen it like the colour. Just wish GM would provide a more realistic look of the actual colour. Buyer beware!

  4. GM needs to get an accurate visual depiction of the Downpour Metallic color on their advertising. I ordered my 2024 3500HD in January, changed the color to the Downpour Metallic when it became available in February, and it looks nothing like what’s presented on the GMC website or this article. It’s not even close to being this dark! Very disappointed.

  5. You’re absolutely right Tom. I ordered my truck with the new colour for my Silverado 1500, and Iwas shocked to see the colour was completely different, a lot lighter than the website pics. I’m wondering, do buyers have any recourse in the false advertising? Shame on the marketing department for the lousy colour misrepresentation of this new colour!
