2024 GMC Canyon Gets Yet Another Production Start Date

GM has revised the 2024 GMC Canyon pickup’s start of regular production (SORP) yet again, pushing it back an additional week, GM Authority has learned from sources familiar with the matter.

Production of the Canyon was originally slated to start on October 30th, 2023, but was pushed back as a result of The General’s contentious negotiations with the UAW in the autumn.

GM changed the commencement of production to December 11th, the same as its cousin the 2024 Chevy Colorado, which is manufactured at the same plant. That date passed without trucks rolling off the assembly line, and now we’ve learned Big Red’s midsize pickup is expected to start on the week of December 18th, 2023.

This date is also tentative and subject to change. Just as tentative is the end of 2023 GMC Canyon production, which is now expected to wrap up on December 13th. Notably, GM originally meant to open the order books for dealership orders during the week of August 24th and start processing retail orders on the week of September 28th.

The UAW’s Stand Up Strike caused the significant interruptions and delays to 2024 GMC Canyon production. The GM Wentzville Assembly Plant in Missouri that produces both the GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado was one of the first three plants targeted by UAW strikers, along with Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan and Stellantis’ Toledo Assembly Complex in Toledo, Ohio.

While the 2023 GMC Canyon ushered in a fully overhauled new generation, the 2024 model year introduced a few updates as well. The most notable of these are the deletion of AT4X Edition 1 Package (RPO code XS1) and the addition of the AT4X AEV Edition (RPO code XEV) package developed in partnership with American Expedition Vehicles.

The AT4X AEV Edition boosts the already formidable off-road capabilities of the AT4X with an assortment of extra equipment. Trail-ready features include stamped steel front and rear bumpers, five ultra-high strength and hot-stamped Boron steel skid plates, a 38.2-degree approach angle, a 26-degree departure angle, and a 26.9-degree break-over angle, as well as 12.2 inches of ground clearance.

As a reminder, the 2024 GMC Canyon will be offered exclusively with a single powertrain configuration, the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.

The base Elevation trim gets RWD as standard, while 4WD is available on the Elevation and standard on the AT4, AT4X and range-topping Denali trim levels. Finally, in regard to structure, the Canyon rides on an updated variant of the GMT 31XX platform.

  1. I say production will start in Feburary or March of 24.

  2. Hope your wrong on that!! Had an order w/ my dealer going back to first week of September for Canyon Denali they had coming in for stock. Told a couple of weeks ago that unit did not make the cut and was not going to be produced. So I put in my order for a 2024.

  3. GM has disappointed many would be owners with their delays in production, shipping and issues with the new trucks. I don’t understand why they are so behind the competition in providing a vehicle with the latest safety technology and reliability. The forecast for GM: expect delays.

  4. I have had a 2023 Canyon Denali on order since July. No build date in the system so we assumed it would not happen and we put in a 2024 order. Then on December 12 they changed status to BUILT! Now have VIN number and records of it being ready to ship. They must still be clearing out some old 2023 orders and parts.

  5. I think if they actually built them and shipped them to the dealerships to sell, they’d have a good chance of outselling the Tacoma. They’re a lot nicer looking truck but if they aren’t on the lots to sell, Toyota will out sell them. I thought about buying a Tacoma until I looked inside a few of them. I don’t care what trim package, they’re all pretty much the same inside. Cramped and cheap looking interior. You can’t even get a trim level that has a power passenger seat so you better only have 1 person that ever rides over there.

    1. Jerry I totally agree with you, I actually switched from a 2022 Tacoma to
a 2023 Colorado. The Tacoma was a big disappointment for me.
I’m not sure who’s making up all this about Toyota Tacoma quality, I can tell you first hand that Colorado is better in every single category including build quality!
I have had my Colorado since May. As far as safety and technology it’s far superior to the 2022 Toyota.

  6. I will be ordering a Colorado ZR2 soon, hopefully! Can someone tell me, once my order is in, can i track it myself, or does the info come from the dealer? If there’s a link, please share, thanks.

  7. i would spend more time talking to present owners, and researching customer complaints before tracking orders…iam losing my respect and confidence with GM and theese trucks and all GM products……really… now you have to be scared to take your truck to the car wash for fear of roof collapsing????

  8. I assume GM does not read this, but it makes me feel better posting here anyway. In my life, i have only had 3 vehicles that were not GM. I have been GM solidly for the last 23 years. My step-dad is a retired GM worker. I have been watching with hopeful anticipation as the new Canyons were coming out. I was planning to buy a Canyon Denali, as possibly my last-ever new vehicle. Now, I am delaying my purchase, and starting to look at other options, including the 2024 Tacoma Limited. Why?
    1. Availability and production issues.
    2. OTA updates bricking the vehicles, and leaving them stranded for weeks/months
    3. GM’s recent announcement to ditch Android Auto and Car Play for their own version (purely for subscription and data sale, IMO).
I hate this so much. I was really so excited about these vehicles. I could possibly fight through the first few issues, but the infotainment debacle is the last straw. So disappointed. See ya ’round, GM.

  10. I ordered my GMC Denali on June 1st and was told it would take 6-8 months to get it. Before the end of August it was sitting in my driveway! It is an awesome truck. Lots of power and plenty of great features. I think it is the best looking midsize truck on the market!. I hope it will be as good as my 2013 Chevy Equinox 3.6 L SUV has been with just short of 200,000 miles on it!

  11. I was able to snag a 23 elevation 2wd and was about to order a Tacoma. Super happy I went with the GMC instead. It’s worth the wait.
