2024 Corvette E-Ray Production Has Started

Production of GM’s first-ever hybrid, all-wheel-drive Vette, the 2024 Chevy Corvette E-Ray, is currently under way, having begun Monday night at the GM Bowling Green plant in Kentucky where all Chevy C8 Corvette sports cars are produced.

The start of 2024 Corvette E-Ray assembly, which a GM employee memo called a “historic moment in Corvette history” per a report by The Detroit News, was apparently filmed, though the video has not yet been made available to the public.

The hybrid drivetrain was introduced to give the E-Ray thrilling performance off the starting line rather than for environmental reasons according to an October discussion and first drive shared by Jay Leno and Corvette Executive Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter. The hybrid AWD setup develops 655 peak horsepower and delivers a zero to 60 mph time of 2.5 seconds, while also allowing the new Corvette variant to cover the quarter-mile in a mere 10.5 seconds.

To achieve these impressive results, the 2024 Corvette E-Ray is motivated by the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT2 gasoline engine, located as usual behind the cockpit. The E-Ray shares the LT2 with the C8 Corvette Stingray, but pairs the ICE powerplant with a single front-mounted electric motor and 1.9 kWh battery pack. The V8 powers the rear wheels, while the electric motor motivates the front wheels.

GM pulled the sheets on the Chevy E-Ray early this year on the 70th anniversary of the Corvette’s original launch, with the start of regular production (SORP) originally scheduled for Monday, October 23rd. This date was then pushed back to Monday, November 27th, though this planned start also failed to materialize.

In addition to its North American rollout, the 2024 Chevy C8 Corvette E-Ray will arrive in Australia in 2024. It will be the third of the Corvette variants to go on sale Down Under, with the C8 Stingray already available and the C8 Z06 soon to arrive in Oceania. The Australian E-Ray will be produced in a right-hand-drive (RHD) configuration and will be sold by General Motors Specialty Vehicles, or GMSV.

  1. About time! We need more vehicles like this, please.

  2. This announcement explains the closing of the plant to tours. I can understand the need to “clear the decks” when making such a large addition to this remarkable production logistics system in Bowling Green.

    1. Tours are currently still taking place. They will not be available starting February 5, 2024. If I had to guess, this is related to a substantial mid-gen update for MY2025. Not that they are changing over that soon but there might be test vehicles moving down the line occasionally and/or updated body panels/interior components that they don’t want to be seen by the public.

  3. Finally, the E-Ray will be produced, but who knows in what numbers to begin with. While the current “Base” C8 is an exceptional performer in it’s own right, raising the standards of the whole Corvette lineup, new additions are always welcomed (The Mighty Z06 and now the futuristic E-Ray) are both going to kick the C8 up another notch that’ll have those foreign Super Car makers going back to the drawing boards, figuring out how in the world GM can build such amazing sports cars for a reasonable “MSRP” to begin with! Then we have those dealers who just can’t leave things as they are delivered to them (MSRP wise) and just be happy being able to sell the product line at “MSRP” and ordering more for their car dealerships.
I guess that “The American Way”, isn’t it…and in truth it is up to the individual looking for a new C8 of their choosing to pay a “Fair Market Value” addition to the cars MSRP, they can refuse to pay the higher price, or go looking for a dealer that’ll at least have the common decency to give the new prospective C8 buyer a decent enough deal so that they keep returning year after year, or model year after model year change with “cash in hand” hoping for a fair deal close to the MSRP.
Oh well, when I bought my 2001 C5 here in SoCal, the dealers were only too happy (read: lucky) to let the car go for MSRP and reorder more new C5’s. However, nothing in life stays the same does it…and in all fairness, once the 2001 Z06 hit the showroom floors, well “MSRP” was thrown right out the showroom window unless it was a customer order and you were good friends with the dealer you were odering that car from. So the more things change, the more they stay the same I guess. Anyway, looking forward to at least seeing these amazing new “E-Ray’s” showing up at local Cars & Coffee events, or car shows, or even cruise nights all across the good old USA come Springtime, or sooner in decent winter weather States.
