General Motors has issued another recall for certain units of the 2013 Chevy Volt due to a problem related to the front driver’s airbag, after issuing a previous recall earlier this year.
The problem: affected vehicles may have a condition where front driver’s airbag contains a supplier manufacturing defect that may result in inflator rupture during deployment.
The hazards: in the event of a vehicle crash and driver’s airbag is commanded to deploy, the driver airbag inflator may rupture, causing metal fragments to pass through the airbag and into the vehicle interior, which could potentially lead to serious injury or even death.
The fix: certified GM technicians will be instructed to inspect affected vehicles and replace the front driver’s airbag and steering wheel as necessary.
Affected components: front driver’s airbag inflator.
Affected vehicles:
- 2013 Chevy Volt
Number of affected vehicles: It’s unclear exactly how many vehicles are affected by this new recall at this time.
Owners should: General Motors will notify owners of affected vehicles and instruct them to make an appointment with their local GM dealer. As a quick reminder, the Chevy Volt was axed from the General Motors lineup following the 2019 model year, as the GM Detroit / Hamtramck plant it was built in became GM Factory Zero plant, which now manufactures full-size electric vehicles such as the GMC Hummer EV and the Chevy Silverado EV.

Ideally GM should have continued to make Volt a wonderful car with 53 mile/85 km electric range. Sad that it was discontinued.
Today millions of PHEVs were sold in china.
There are plenty of plug-in hybrid options in the United States today … not sure if any of them use the Volt’s technology or not. I owned a 2013, got rid of it for a 2018. I like the ability to save the electric use for when it’s most efficient, not sure other cars have that capability. I rented a Chrysler minivan that was a plug-in hybrid, and it did not have the ability to hold the electric. GM had awesome technology in their hands and tossed it. I always thought it would have been good for use in a 1/2 ton truck with a small diesel engine too. Oh, wait, Dodge Ram is doing that! Way to go Mary.
