The current fourth-generation Chevy Silverado 1500 made its formal introduction for the 2019 model year, with a mid-cycle refresh debuting late in the 2022 model year. Looking ahead, the overhauled fifth-generation Chevy Silverado 1500 is expected to debut in 2026 for the 2027 model year. Which leads us to ask – what improvements would you like the next-gen Chevy Silverado 1500 to receive?
For those readers who may not remember, the refreshed 2022.5 Chevy Silverado 1500 followed the launch of the carryover 2022 Chevy Silverado LTD (“Limited”), the latter of which was offered as a stop-gap measure until production of the refreshed 2022.5 model year got underway. Compared to the pre-refresh model, the refreshed Silverado 1500 offers a long list of updates and changes, including the new-for-2022 Silverado ZR2, which is aimed at off-road enthusiasts thanks to a long list of dirt-duty equipment designed to enhance the pickup’s off-road capability. Highlights include front and rear e-lockers, MultiMatic DSSV dampers, off-road chassis calibrations, 33-inch off-road tires, skid plates, a new high-approach steel front bumper, and 11.2 inches of ground clearance.
The refreshed Silverado 1500 also introduced a completely overhauled cabin, with a 13.4-inch color touchscreen included as standard. A 12.3-inch configurable instrument panel is also offered.
As for the powertrain options, the latest Chevy Silverado 1500 lineup offers four engine possibilities, including the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, and finally, the new-for-2023 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine, rated at 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque. Transmission options include either the GM 8-speed automatic or the GM 10-speed automatic, depending on the engine selected.

Reliability !
The number one thing to change, eliminate the miserable cylinder deactivation. I love my 22 Sierra 6.2, but can’t stand the engine vibration. It makes me consider brand “X”.
Build a Raptor and Tex killer. This means a engine with more horsepower than the competitors.
automatic transmission is only available. It lasts between 70,000 to 90,000 miles and very expensive to repair!!
Want a manual transmission
I’d LOVE to see a 4×4/awd V8 hybrid setup, similar to the Corvette E-Ray. Something that destroys the TRX and Raptor R.
#1. Build a powerful yet gas efficient 4×4 hybrid. 5.3 liter is great..need 30+ mpg. Tow 11k+. It would sell!
#2. Better leather seats that don’t tear on sides. I think its some sort of vinyl on the sides now. My last 2 GM trucks ripped and cracked on driver seat
#3. Return to the column shift. Valuable space is needed in the middle. No need to be like F and Toy.
#4. Concentrate on LTZ and SLT..this is the mainstream that buyers want. It’s hard to find these models in 4×4..z71, x31
More customizable central console inserts would be quite interesting to have along with the option for column shifter to keep more usable efficient space. Seat options like more cushion would also be nice
Column shifter would be my #1. Consoles are for a cup of iced tea.
Keeping a straight gas V8 is #2.
Going back to the Umber (baseball glove leather color) full seats and dash is #3.
Hard to believe the T1x is already 6 model years old. It still looks fresh.
Eliminate DFM and AFM
Bring back adjustable pedals, new 5.7 L V8 and market it as a “350”, coil spring option for better ride, outfitter switches overhead like Ford, make a 2speed transfer case standard, all vehicle cameras would be accessible on iPhone app to monitor vehicle while away, lighted footwells!

Better front seats along the lines of ram interior and get rid of the cylinder shut off because it’s garbage and they know it’s garbage.
Bring the best and longest lasting truck on the road.
I think the biggest improvement I want to see it powertrains. I like the idea of an E-Ray like setup as an option, not for the sake of 0-60 only, but for economy and towing/hauling using the drive mode switch. Mate it to the 5.3 for a nice power adder and decent economy. Speaking of the 5.3, it and the 6.2 need an update or move to the new gen 6. Not because it’s weak, but because of weight gain. Also, manufacturers focus so much on range and economy for evs, why can’t they do the same for the ice with flat undertrays and other aero tricks.
#1: Keep the gas V8 options (esp the newly redesigned small block) but without AFM.
#2: Offer a true plug in hybrid option with perhaps a range of 50 miles on electric. I’d like to see this system with a V8 for towing.
#3: Increase the fuel tank capacity!
#4: Seat padding needs to be thicker.
#5: Include an actual PRINT owners manual. Nothing says FU more than a thin manual thrown in the glove box along with a card saying look it up online.
Front camera, better front end appearance, more power from the 5.3 V8.
A focus on safety – at this time no full-size pickup has been able to achieve the coveted IIHS recommended status.
Second would be a focus on quality. The GM pickups, and pickups in general, have been lagging on almost every quality stat out there. We know GM can produce top ranked products on the quality and durability level, it is time to bring that to the pickups and full size SUVs.
Lose the dated wood panels in some of the trim levels! An option for black stitching instead of only yellow in the interior of the ZR2 would be nice too.
Does anyone believe GM will listen to the customer? I had discussions with my dealer that I have purchased 9 GMC trucks from about the shifter change from column to the console. I asked why ruin the console space that I use daily for a console shifter, that by the way I despise; my dealer made the comment GM doesn’t listen to them either! 😳
Fix the lifter failure problems created by the stupid afm
Powertrain. The next gen small blocks, the Gen 6 better be a big improvement. The current engines are just somewhat massaged 14-19 stuff (new water pump, DFM instead of AFM). And unfortunately, spotty in reliability.
I hope the Turbomax stays, and I hope the LZ0 Duramax sticks around as well, but I’m sure those could change. GM and Ford will probably be the last two with a V8 offering though in the full size 1/2 ton market seeing Ram is all in on the I6 Hurricanes. I do recall it was rumored GM had an I6 in the works that was CSS platformed (same as the Turbomax and the 3.0 Duramax) but that got ditched.
Otherwise I hope they do a nice design on the exterior, and perhaps interior wise evolve the current refreshed one which I love the layout in mine. Very GM familiar to the old GMT-400, 800 and 900 in that typical GM dash layout they used for a long time, just updated with all the tech. Oh and new seats please.
Be able to build the truck the way we want it. It’s complete BS to have the power train and interior configured the way we want it, and get the point where you want to add a $1000 safety package to the truck and be told, no, you cannot do that without:
– Upgrading the power train that costs $1600
– Swapping the front bench seat to buckets with a center console that costs $620
– Buying a package that changes the cloth seats to leather, that also requires the purchase of yet another prerequisite package that adds a bunch of other unwanted, and unnecessary crap that costs $5000+
This makes the $1000 package cost $8000+ to add, is false advertising, fubars my power train choice and interior configuration that I would have sit in on a daily basis, and creates a price point I don’t want to pay.
With this silliness, why should I try and configure and purchase your truck? Are you going to make me buy a Tundra? A Tundra, I can add items without fubarring my previous choices. The package price points are the price points. I can add and get exactly what I want.
Put a turbo in the 5.3 V-8 engine
So it can suck? Last I saw the 5.3 is more efficient than the new turbo engines.
After my 11th Silverado…Lower the hood line per SAE downward vision recommendations so that cameras are not required to park (increasing price and complexity). Lit sunvisors on other than top trim levels and sunglass bin in roof console.
Make a standard cab with a short or long bed option. Not everybody wants or needs a 4 door truck that guzzles gas and weighs more and is harder to find parking space for. I had a 2006 Sierra reg cab/short bed “work truck” that i regret ever selling, and now you don’t even have the option to buy one!
Regular cab, short box, V8 engine 2 WD and 4X4 with trim levels and options above WT…….
WOW!!!!! Do I agree. Bring back ALL the options for a SWB Reg. cab again. The work truck trim is krap. If Joe working guy, wants too purchase a top of the line trim package, he has to buy what they tell him to buy. Bring back the days of carte-blanche ordering. Back when the Square bodys were hot, one could order ANYTHING that was availible on the Silverado model, in any other version…. Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, Cheyenne, or Silverado! One could build what one needed and or wanted. They were still built on the same lines. Also, while bringing back the SWB Reg. cab, why not bring back a solid front axle option? I’ve had 4 newer trucks with IFS, and I really miss my older trucks with a solid front axle. Ram and Ford, still have solid axles in some models. One last thing, No more hybrids and no more AFM krap!!!! Oh, I forgot…. GM NEVER listens to their customers!
I agree with Stepsideman. Bring back the SWB Reg. cab version. In ALL trim level. My husband has a 1500 4×4 Work Truck. UGLY!!!! He has alway previously, had SWB Reg, Cab 4×4. While many people here are asking for frivolous things, many are asking for the right things too. Like a sold axle front end. 454 Big blocks. No more AFM. These things would make for a far better truck and GM could compete better against its rivals. Ford has been number one for a reason. Rams interiors are far better than anyones. It’s just the terrible quality of Ford and Ram, that keeps us from even thinking about them. If GM really is reading this. I agree, bring back Carte-Blanche ordering. GM would sell more, and customers would be much more happy.
I agree with both of you. GM again supposedly, makes a limited amount of SWB Reg. cab, WT’s. Anyone seen one in the USA? Not me. And bring back Carte-Blanche ordering again. That would help make EVERYONE on this Forum happy. Having to buy all these super exspensive “Packages”is NUTS! Having a chance to order what one wants, needs, would be a very simple thing to do. As far as I know, GM trucks are built on only two lines. How hard can it be to build what a high paying customer really wants? Ford and Ram, are killing GM with their ability to build pretty much want the consumer needs, wants. GM, is again, asleep behind the wheel. OH yeh, I would LOVE to see a solid front axle option too. Ford has it and so does Ram! And, does anyone really think GM is watching this Forum?
1) Column shift. !!!!!!!
2) Bring back the sunglass bin into the overhead by the Homelink buttons
Bring back the adjustable pedals, add a sunglasses bin to the roofline and give us the option of a larger fuel tank.
Also, add paint protection to the front of the vehicle- my 6 month old High Country has rock chips in the front bumper, grille and hood.
Provide the option of having a split mid-gate, the same one being offered on the EV model, along with the Avalanche style side storage compartments.
Compare with Ford and Japanese trucks with a more powerful engine that can compete with them without the outrages msrp.
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, not GMGoogleSpyRadio, plus go back to column shifter.
One of best ideas I’ve ever heard was a dealer who said give UAW the $43/hour they want but take away $5/hour for every recall. Truly an out-of-the-box idea that would turn GM’s quality around in a hurry.
Great idea, but I think the engineers, not factory workers, are responsible for design failures.
“One of best ideas I’ve ever heard was a dealer who said give UAW the $43/hour they want but take away $5/hour for every recall.”
Make extended cab, long bed, 4×4 available in all trim levels like you use to.
I sure will go along with the extended cab, long bed, 4X4. I’ve stuck with the 2500 HD model just to get those exact features. I’ve never understood why the long bed was taken off the 1500. It’s not even an option now.
Whatever happened to the Independent rear suspension? A Blower option for the 5.3.
Better seats! I have a 2022 High Country. My 2011 LTZ had better seats.
More colors, both interior and exterior
Power fold mirrors available all trims
Technology package available all trims
Sliding rear window delete, who needs it on a crew cab?
Privacy glass delete for the rear window
More 17″ and 18″ wheel options, not everyone wants 20″ and larger wheels.
OnStar delete
Column shifter
Body color mirrors an option, rather than requiring a trim choice. Same for door handles and bumpers
I take my Silverado on long trips all the time and would Love, love, love better and softer seats…PLEASE
Competitive brands are so much better.
