What Are These 2024 Corvette Units Doing In A Michigan Parking Lot?

A fleet of roughly 100 brand-new 2024 Corvette units were recently seen stored at a parking lot in Pontiac, Michigan. The exact reason why all these new mid-engine sports cars were stored there is unclear at this time. That said, this isn’t the first time GM has amassed a fleet of brand-new vehicles waiting to be shipped.

Looking over pictures of the parked cars, the vast majority are wrapped up in white covers, although at least one unit appears to be uncovered. These C8 Corvette units appear to be brand-new and ready for delivery, with a somewhat even mix between C8 Corvette Coupes and C8 Corvette Convertibles. The first row of vehicles appear to be the base-model C8 Stingray, as indicated by the 5-split-spoke wheels.

The exact reason why all these C8 Corvette units are stored in Michigan remains unclear. GM Authority reached out to General Motors for a comment, but has yet to receive a response.

Notably, this is definitely not the first time we’ve seen or heard about General Motors storing a fleet of brand-new vehicles ready for delivery. Back in May, GM Authority covered the story of the thousands of 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon units that were damaged by a massive hail storm while parked outside the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri, the facility where both pickups are produced. In addition to being parked around the GM Wentzville plant, some of the units were parked at nearby storage areas, including a quarry.

Some of the vehicles were waiting on retrofits and / or quality control, per previous GM Authority coverage. In a statement emailed to GM Authority, the Director of Chevy Truck Communications, Shad Balch, said that “during launch, it is a common practice for us to temporarily build and hold vehicles to ensure quality before shipping to dealers.”

Some sort of logistical snag may also explain what’s going on, with commercial trucking and rail transport shortages being a common issue all year long.

Of course, neither of these possibilities explain why the 2024 Corvette units are in Michigan, rather than in Kentucky near the GM Bowling Green facility, the exclusive producer of the Chevy Corvette since 1981.

Regardless, we’ll relay any further information on this story as we receive it, so make sure to subscribe to GM Authority for more mid-engine Corvette news, C8 news, Chevy Corvette news, Chevy news, and around-the-clock GM news coverage.

  1. It’s just a company creating price gouging… I mean “inflation” by holding back supply. It’s the “in” thing and all the rage on what businesses are doing these past few years. Got to keep them stock holders happy, ‘ya know!

    1. I agree. What’s gonna sell for more, a Vette that’s semi hard to get or a Vette in a semi flooded market. Guarantee this isn’t the only lot holding Corvettes.

    2. There’s already multiple dealerships selling them for below MSRP.

        1. Ya I live outside Calgary. None of these Corvettes are selling. They’re rotting on Autotrader.

  2. I really doubt that as its costs money to hold these. Its cash flow and when you have vehicles tied up that could be sold , it costs money!!

  4. Go to Mid Engine Corvette Forum and there are lots of post about this issue. Some of those cars have been invoiced and paid for by customers. A few were even tracked by owners via OnStar. Their inquiries to dealers have been unanswered by Chevrolet corporate. Some owners are trying to back out of their purchase. I would be in that group myself.

    1. Rick. I believe there was a customer that went to see his car when it was dropped from the transport at his dealer. It was a Corvette that was tracked to the Michigan site. When it was off loaded there was an issue with the brakes. They immediately took and put it on a rack. Work had been done on the rear suspension and there was residual grease and grime all over the rotor and brakes. I saw this from a post several days ago. The owner was reluctant to accept the car and his dealer reached out to Chevy for an explanation and nothing was communicated at the time of the post.

  6. Maybe they are going to a race school like Ron Fellows or something along those line.

  7. It may be something related to 2024 models being assembled with some 2023 parts.
